01:30 Re-evaluating Numerical Statistics & The Legacy of James Royse
Welcome to the fifth session of our foundational course in Biblical Textual Criticism. In this lecture, we master the balancing of external evidence and learn how to evaluate manuscripts and their respective textual families.
We explore the physical reality of the documents themselves—their chronological age, geographical distribution, and lineages. Instead of simply counting late Byzantine copies numerically, we analyze why early papyri fragments carry massive statistical weight. Join us as we examine the four major text types, including the Alexandrian text type (represented by P75, Codex Vaticanus, and Codex Sinaiticus) and the Western text type, and discover how Professor James Royse dismantled old critical assumptions to protect the historical authority of the text.
Through this channel, we aim to simplify a complex specialty, Biblical criticism of the New Testament, by presenting core concepts and practical issues. Hoping to see your active participation, comments, and fruitful discussions.
If you are interested in the historical transmission of the New Testament and textual changes introduced into the scripture manuscripts, we invite you to read these two important books by prominent authors in the field of textual criticism:
1. Studies in the Theory and Method of New Testament Textual Criticism | by Eldon J. Epp & Gordon D. Fee
2. New Testament Text and Translation Commentary | by Philip W. Comfort
