Welcome to the fourth session of our foundational course in Biblical Textual Criticism. In this lecture, we investigate the mechanics of deliberate changes, theological motivations, and intentional scribal alterations during early handwritten transmission.
We analyze how ancient copyists acted as active theological editors, modifying words to defend specific Christological doctrines, fight heresies, or smooth out rough grammatical phrasing and perceived historical conflicts. Join us as we explore how these literary and structural revisions formed the vast majority of deliberate variants—leading to the creation of conflated readings within the Byzantine text tradition—and how modern textual criticism dissects these late compound expansions to recover the textual form nearest to the original Apostolic text.
Through this channel, we aim to simplify a complex specialty, Biblical criticism of the New Testament, by presenting core concepts and practical issues. Hoping to see your active participation, comments, and fruitful discussions.
If you are interested in the historical transmission of the New Testament and textual changes introduced into the scripture manuscripts, we invite you to read these two important books by prominent authors in the field of textual criticism:
1. Studies in the Theory and Method of New Testament Textual Criticism | by Eldon J. Epp & Gordon D. Fee
2. New Testament Text and Translation Commentary | by Philip W. Comfort
