Welcome to the eighth session of our foundational course in Biblical Textual Criticism. In this lecture, we conduct a critical case study on one of the most famous and heavily debated textual problems in manuscript history: The Comma Johanneum in 1 John 5:7-8.
We evaluate the absolute external and internal evidence under strict text-critical parameters to trace the historical origin of this insertion. Discover how textual forensics show that the Comma is entirely missing from all ancient Greek manuscripts for the first thousand years of Church history—including Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus—and how it originated as a local Latin marginal gloss that later entered the printed Greek text through the famous dilemma of Erasmus and Codex Montfortianus.
