00:01:37Hello, everybody, and welcome to qualifying for this weekend's British Grand Prix here on Speed Channel.

00:01:42I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.

00:01:45On any race weekend in England, you can bet at some point during the event it will rain.

00:01:49It has not yet at Silverstone, but with the possibility of changing conditions comes the possibility of different fuel strategies

00:01:55and car setups.

00:01:57How will the possibility of weather affect this year's qualifying?

00:02:00Here's Peter Windsor with that story.

00:02:05Yes, guys, not too many people in the F1 paddock want to remember first qualifying here a year ago,

00:02:10and everybody was trying to go slowly enough because they thought it was going to rain in official qualifying.

00:02:15Of course, the qualifying system completely different in 2005, but one thing hasn't changed,

00:02:19and that is the unpredictability of the British weather.

00:02:22So how will that impact on the fuel loads and the sort of strategy that the teams will be using

00:02:27for their qualifying setup?

00:02:30I think the reality is in terms of one stop, two stop, three stop, what you're projected lapped to complete

00:02:39the Grand Prix

00:02:39or the time to complete the Grand Prix isn't significantly affected by wet weather.

00:02:45Obviously, the issue in the rain is being flexible, and that's more important because of the crossover of the tyres.

00:02:50You don't want to be carrying an extra 15 kilograms of fuel when the crossover point comes if you can

00:02:55help it,

00:02:56but no one can possibly know.

00:02:57So the luck factor becomes a bigger element in those sort of changeable conditions.

00:03:05If you try and second or third guess the weather, you're going to trip up somewhere.

00:03:10It is very, very difficult to do.

00:03:13There is no hard and fast strategy that works in clement conditions.

00:03:18What will happen is the weather will be what it is, and some guys will luck into a weather window,

00:03:23and some guys will luck out.

00:03:25You know, you can fuel to lap 15 and find that it rains on lap 17, and that's it.

00:03:29You've made two stops in two laps.

00:03:31You can fuel to lap 21 and find that it rains on lap 20, and suddenly you're looking a hero.

00:03:36So it is impossible to second guess.

00:03:39All you can say is that maybe people would be taking a more conservative view to strategy

00:03:46than the aggressive view on the basis that by going less stops and doing longer windows,

00:03:53you effectively open up a window to a possibility of weather.

00:03:59Well, there's so many variations, and Silverstone is special because of that.

00:04:05It's the same for everyone, obviously.

00:04:08In qualifying, it will be different because it will be different times for qualifying.

00:04:13I just hope it's dry when I get there.

00:04:17Well, a man you just heard from, Rubens Barichella, was a two-time pole sitter here,

00:04:21but he has not had one yet this year, so he could be that sixth different man in six starts.

00:04:27A lot of drama thus far this weekend.

00:04:29A couple of engine changes, including Tiago Montero's Jordan and, perhaps more importantly,

00:04:34Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren.

00:04:36Raikkonen had a mechanical problem in this morning's second practice.

00:04:39He's the fastest man in the sport in the last half-dozen or so races.

00:04:43Certainly the fastest man this weekend here at Silverstone

00:04:45is already looking at another 10-grid spot penalty, just as he took a week ago in France.

00:04:52Oh, well, lucky people in life.

00:04:53Rich Patton always say there's no such thing as luck.

00:04:55You make your own luck, but poor old Kimi Raikkonen does not have much luck.

00:04:59And starting 10th or lower here is going to be very difficult to win this one,

00:05:04and he's got to start winning these races,

00:05:05and he's got to have Alonso down in, like, fourth, fifth, or sixth.

00:05:08Now, the order in which the cars will take to the track, as always,

00:05:11the results of the last event, that being the French Grand Prix last weekend,

00:05:14meaning that Juan Pablo Montoya of McLaren,

00:05:17who has also been very quick in practice today,

00:05:20will get a very early and disadvantageous qualifying start position.

00:05:26This is Christian Morner from the Red Bull team.

00:05:28They've been showing some speed this weekend.

00:05:30Right now, let's take a look at our Porsche track map.

00:05:32David, tell us about your home track.

00:05:35Well, exactly.

00:05:35It was not very far from home,

00:05:37and the basic layout has stayed the same over these last 55 years.

00:05:40It used to be eight corners,

00:05:41if you counted the three sweepers at Chapel, Maggots, and Abbey.

00:05:44Now, of course, as you can see, it's up to 17.

00:05:46They keep on trying to slow it down.

00:05:47The average speed still ran about 145 miles an hour.

00:05:51Cops are very fast right-handed.

00:05:53And then at Maggots, Beckett's, Chapel Complex,

00:05:56incredible direction change on these cars.

00:05:58Long run down to Stowe Corner,

00:06:00which has been tightened up,

00:06:00so it's not as quick as it used to be.

00:06:02Down to the Vale,

00:06:03which has been artificially dug out.

00:06:05There's a bit of elevation changing.

00:06:06Club Corner up to Abbey Chicane,

00:06:07a bit of an uphill run.

00:06:09The Abbey Chicane, of course,

00:06:10again has neutered what used to be

00:06:11a very fast left-hand sweeper.

00:06:13Now the bridge is a pretty quick right-hander.

00:06:16Then you go into the new Priory,

00:06:17Brooklyn's, Luffield Complex,

00:06:19which leads on to the old,

00:06:20or the end of the old, Woodcutt Corner.

00:06:21So the drivers still like it.

00:06:24And that, as I say,

00:06:25that Maggots-Becketts Complex

00:06:26is very, very fast.

00:07:12First man out a week ago in France.

00:07:13He is the first man on track

00:07:15in qualifying here at Silverstone.

00:07:18The track here at Silverstone

00:07:19is still a bit green,

00:07:20so going out early in the qualifying

00:07:21is not good.

00:07:22There's not enough rubber down yet.

00:07:24Christian Kline has been quicker

00:07:25than his teammate David Coulthard

00:07:26most of the weekend,

00:07:27and David Coulthard

00:07:28had trouble on the track this morning.

00:07:30He was stuck out there

00:07:31a lot slower than Christian,

00:07:32but I think that wasn't synonymous

00:07:34for David's running.

00:07:35He's quicker than that.

00:07:37No, they've had a lot of problem

00:07:39getting temperature into these tyres.

00:07:40It's a little bit cooler

00:07:41than they expected.

00:07:43Both Michelin and Bridgestone

00:07:44saying they really wanted

00:07:45a little bit warmer.

00:07:46Well, this is a very abrasive track

00:07:50as well and a lot of grip.

00:07:53About the second grippiest track around.

00:07:57Bridgestone have bought

00:07:58four different specifications

00:08:00of tyres here.

00:08:02Michelin, I think, have got two.

00:08:05Bridgestone complained

00:08:05and a little bit of graining

00:08:06on their tyres.

00:08:07Michelin certainly not

00:08:08they haven't got a problem,

00:08:09but they are.

00:08:10What they want is

00:08:11they're struggling

00:08:11to get temperature in.

00:08:12We saw a lot of spins yesterday.

00:08:14It was at least

00:08:15just some sun shining today.

00:08:17Yesterday it was very overcast

00:08:18and cloudy and cool

00:08:20and of course

00:08:20with the hard compound tyres

00:08:22these guys were having

00:08:23a bit of a struggle

00:08:23getting any grip at all.

00:08:24We saw a lot of spins yesterday.

00:08:25Yeah, it's the hardest compound

00:08:26both of the tyre suppliers

00:08:28and this is the hardest compound

00:08:29we've made.

00:08:30Oh, well, you can see it there

00:08:31starting to give up a little bit.

00:08:33The problem is that

00:08:36really the last big test

00:08:37at Silverstone

00:08:37was back in June.

00:08:41And these tyre engineers

00:08:43of course looking at data

00:08:44from all the rest of the races

00:08:45and will have adjusted

00:08:45the compounds from June.

00:08:47As I say, Bridgestone

00:08:48have two brand new constructions

00:08:50and compounds here.

00:08:52So it's all a little bit

00:08:53unknown territory

00:08:53for these guys.

00:08:54Ross Braun made that comment

00:08:56in a technical director's

00:08:58press briefing

00:09:00to brand new Bridgestones.

00:09:01And Michelin does in fact

00:09:02have four,

00:09:03two primes

00:09:03and two options

00:09:04for their teams.

00:09:05Of course, the teams choose

00:09:06two to try out on Friday

00:09:09and now they are set

00:09:10for the weekend.

00:09:10Christian cleaned about

00:09:12a second slower

00:09:13than he was this morning

00:09:14so it does not look like

00:09:15he's carrying an awful lot

00:09:16of fuel.

00:09:22He's been doing well

00:09:24As far as qualifying goes,

00:09:26he's had at the top

00:09:32the strategy for the race.

00:44:34using all the road there and a little bit more through club car looking pretty smooth Ray

00:44:40now Jenson Button our provisional pole sitter is one of the previous

00:44:44five different pole sitters we've seen the only man who could keep that streak of different

00:44:48pole winners driver and team is this man Michael Schumacher Raikkonen Alonso still to come each have

00:44:56one through bridge how's it gonna be oh half a second off lost quite a bit there and this last

00:45:01sector the Ferrari has not been great no this is where you really need the heat and the tires

00:45:07around here really good mechanical grip on this last sector they just don't seem to have had it

00:45:10one way or another this weekend either whether it's the chassis or the tires he's still on that strange

00:45:15new bridge stone tire does he have enough confidence in it no look at that eight oh my

00:45:22holy mackerel more than a second off the pace doesn't bother mr button much

00:45:29a thousands off in that first sector the long sector and then suddenly drops to over a second

00:45:34slow as John Todd not looking at all happy with that i was counting there are a few new wrinkles

00:45:41well here comes something of a lame duck effort Kimi Raikkonen as quick as they come in formula one

00:45:47but he knows he will start no higher than 10th on the grid for tomorrow's race and now you see

00:45:52the track bathed in sunshine

00:46:06wow look at that and it's nothing trivial is it 0.4 under and the car just looks so smooth

00:46:13this McLaren particularly in the hands of Raikkonen this year has been just terrific early on in the

00:46:18year they have trouble getting heated in their tires look at that lack of steering number two from

00:46:24Kimi just as smooth as still

00:46:26look at the way it goes over those curves it just doesn't upset it at all

00:46:39it's going to be well inside here yeah no lifted bridge

00:46:46he could make history this weekend 55 runnings of the british grand prix at three different tracks

00:46:52no man has ever won from lower than seven on the grid button will start no higher than 10

00:46:59and he may be the fastest man he is by nearly three tenths of a second

00:47:06what a time a 19-9 that is getting down close to last year's poll obviously jubilation there but

00:47:13obviously somewhat muted because they know they have to go back to 10th more of what might have

00:47:19been i mean he just drove the wheels off that thing in france a week ago and he was still

00:47:24a poor second

00:47:25for it here comes the championship leader the man Raikkonen and all the rest are chasing for the title

00:47:31at 23 he could become the youngest world champion ever but as he'll be the first to tell you that's

00:47:37a long way down the road this is fernando alonzo of spain in the renault last year a couple of

00:47:43times

00:47:44on his qualifying laps he spun this year we've seen none of that alonzo looking very very smooth

00:47:50in the conference this year 10th off in that first sector

00:47:56but of course no pressure on him right

00:48:02you know he's gonna finish off the front row pretty well much whatever

00:48:16just a hair quicker the gently button at this stage

00:48:23tension in that bar fit now palpable of it oh wow

00:48:28that was an incredible sector and this is where the renos very quick through here too this last

00:48:33thing yep the closest man to him on the grid right now one pablo montoya is 11th in the championship

00:48:40talk

00:48:41about no pressure to the line will he be quicker yes by 27 thousandths of a second fernando alondo alonzo

00:48:53moves to pole and what is quickly turning into a dominant season for renault and their young spanish

00:49:01charger his fourth bowl of the year his sixth front row starting position

00:49:07so that will put kimmy raikkonen back in 12th a week ago at manicure he was 13th on the grid

00:49:14and finished second to this man and they were fully expected the mclarence to be the quickest cars

00:49:19around here they were really hoping for a terrific race here looking for a one-two result with raikkonen and

00:49:24montoya but obviously the renault again has thrown a spanner in those works it's the quickest car here

00:49:30and if it remains this quick tomorrow kimmy raikkonen it's going to have a heck of a job

00:49:35well there's no doubt the car's quick but it i mean mclaren are aware that they're going to

00:49:41they're going to have to face that 10 spot penalty and would have put extra fuel in to allow for

00:49:45that

00:49:45but then you consider how fast raikkonen's time was right there and he's just finished second

00:49:49a 19.932 and remember how the race unfolded last week in france where alonso simply took off like

00:49:57a scalded dog and had 30 seconds on the field in about 20 laps giving him all the time he

00:50:03needed

00:50:03for whatever pitch strategy he was on yeah well of course we thought he was on a definite three

00:50:07stopper with an early stop in it and it never just kept going going that's to take nothing away from

00:50:13alonso and reno's performance there but i think we have to bear in mind that the pace of reikkonen and

00:50:18mclaren if they've got that extra fuel on board because of they know that they've got that that

00:50:22penalty that's pretty impressive work from mclaren right there so they'll be trying to stretch every

00:50:27drop out of that tank and go as fast as possible to try to close up on alonso we'll see

00:50:32what they

00:50:32learned from last week in france so the euphoria in the bar pit just a little bit subdued but

00:50:37nevertheless jensen button will line up on the front row alongside alonso

00:50:43and that could make for a pretty exciting start down there into cops yeah right

00:50:50the renault team principal flavio briatore said they might definitely slip into defensive mode this

00:50:57weekend run a conservative strategy and be interesting to see how that affects the way

00:51:02this guy fernando alonso heads into the first turn look how slowly he's going to conserve the fuel in the

00:51:09tank because that's what he'll start the race with yeah the engineers will be straight on the radio to

00:51:14alonso totally well done chap and all that but do turn the mixture right down save fuel conserve fuel

00:51:20come in as slowly as possible and that's exactly the way they'd say it well done now back to business

00:54:19good a little bit unexpected this this pole position but uh the car this morning felt much much better

00:54:25than yesterday the the team did an incredible job the last night with some different changes we did

00:54:33and the car fell straight away quite quick this morning so i was uh p1 in in the last session

00:54:39and

00:54:39in p4 so you know i think uh we were in qualifying very confident but probably not that confidence to

00:54:47to get the pole but it's obviously a great result for us well coming off a great result obviously

00:54:53renault's home grand prix in france but this in some ways is another home race for you

00:54:57talk about the atmosphere here and coming to silverstone leading the championship as you are

00:55:01yes it's fantastic obviously the 70 percent of the of the team english people so for us it's

00:55:09also the the home grand prix here in in silverstone for all the guys they sleep at home half of

00:55:15the

00:55:15people so it's a really interesting uh grand prix for for everybody in the team and uh yeah always

00:55:22when we are here we the drivers all the the members of the team we are together in the factory

00:55:27a few

00:55:28days before the grand prix so so i think the atmosphere there was uh fantastic because we are

00:55:33leading both championship and uh so far that we can start in a good way as well so everything that

00:55:38uh we can we can ask we we have it and your thoughts on the race tomorrow strategy obviously

00:55:44kimmy may be on a different fuel load yeah i think uh we will have a again different different

00:55:49strategies all the all the teams i think maybe more similar here than in many course that uh we saw

00:55:55some people doing uh different very different strategies but uh anyway the the race is always

00:56:01very long here in silverstone uh it can happen anything hopefully the weather will stay constant

00:56:07and dry and uh we can have a good race but uh i'm i'm really really confident uh for sure

00:56:14what

00:56:14happened to to kimmy uh it's not uh fair and i think uh will will be you know again uh

00:56:22problems for him

00:56:23but uh we have to do our race our maximum like we did in quality and uh so far we

00:56:28have the poll on

00:56:29on the pocket thank you fernando kimmy commiserations to you for the second successive race an old pump

00:56:36problem this morning is assassinating an engine change and having to take that 10 place penalty

00:56:40on the grid um yeah it's not the ideal situation again but it's nothing what i can do i just

00:56:48drive as quickly as i can as i can and then we see tomorrow what happens but for sure it's

00:56:54not

00:56:54uh it's not the way to try to win the championship if you take every time 10 places penalty so

00:57:00we're not

00:57:01that quick and then to to give so much uh to the other guys well we saw in france your

00:57:07strategy

00:57:07there running a lot of fuel in that first stint there you picked up some places as they all came

00:57:11into the pits what's it going to be like tomorrow we will see what happens but it really depends what

00:57:19happens in the front if if the if the front people will not disappear as quickly as in france i

00:57:25think

00:57:25so we have very run very strong position but uh i don't know what what they are doing we only

00:57:32know

00:57:32what we are doing so i think so we have had very good car here always and the car was

00:57:36pretty pretty

00:57:37good today so let's wait and see given the setup you had for qualifying your lap looked pretty good

00:57:44yeah i run wide on one of the quick corners and up end of the back straight because i think

00:57:50so the

00:57:50biggest problem in here was that what happened to us it happened in the last practice and then we

00:57:56didn't put the new tires and it was really difficult to know how the car will be in a qualifying

00:58:00we were

00:58:01guessing a little bit and at least it went pretty much okay and the car was not too bad so

00:58:07it was okay

00:58:14yeah it's it's a great feeling um we didn't quite expect it um so it's it's fantastic to be at

00:58:20the

00:58:20front um i think we can do some pretty good things from there everyone wants to know what do you

00:58:27you can actually do how quick is the car it looked to be a little bit down on the first

00:58:30sector there but

00:58:31very quick relative to the renault sectors two and three yeah we've struggled a little bit through

00:58:37beckett's uh and also cop's turn one so that is a little bit of a worry for the race

00:58:42um but apart from that the car's been working very well in low speed corners and the rest of the

00:58:47high speed corners and the circuit so you know it's it's nice to be in this position and and to

00:58:52be at the front able to fight with uh the renos and the mclarens um because we've had a pretty

00:58:57tough

00:58:58time of it um so yeah it's nice to be up there and i think it can only get better

00:59:03from there i think

00:59:05and the british crowd behind you as they will be tomorrow they've been great you know it's great to

00:59:09have so many fans here i've never um well there's only one time this year that i've seen a crowd

00:59:16like this and that was in barcelona so uh it's great to see so many fans out there not just

00:59:21british

00:59:21but from all around the world so uh yeah hopefully we can put on a good show for them and

00:59:25uh i'm

00:59:27sure we can do that we look forward to it very much indeed thank you very much just turning to

00:59:31you finally fernando your thoughts on this grand prix in the context of some events that have happened in

00:59:37uh in london over the last couple of days if you could perhaps just talk to us in terms of

00:59:43one's approach to this tragedy yeah i think all of us we are very sad and this is not uh

00:59:50not good at

00:59:52all i think what happened in in london the last few days i think for all formula one people we

00:59:58want to

00:59:58to express our respect for all the all the people the victims the family and put a good show for

01:00:05also for

01:00:05them tomorrow i think the sport especially formula one cannot do much in these occasions but what is

01:00:15in our hands we will do it tomorrow well he could certainly put a smile on some faces let's enjoy

01:00:22fernando alonso's pole lap averaging nearly 144 miles per hour very mature words from the night from a 23

01:00:30year old through cops there the car obviously very quick it's a very very fast right hand sweep now he's

01:00:35coming down to that maggots that is right then his left tremendous g loading on the driver in the car

01:00:41mechanical and aero grip absolutely essential note just clips the edge there where button said the

01:00:46bar was having problems yeah he was saying it didn't really work well through maggots and beckett's

01:00:51complex but looking at the renault didn't get the fastest sector time in that first sector but it just

01:00:56worked so well going through cops and now we really start to see the renault chassis

01:01:02of the rs25 engine come to life in the segment third sectors slower complex there the new club

01:01:07complex with the left and the right steepish uphill pull here to the abysher gain another tightish job

01:01:15but you want to have a good exit out of here very important have a good exit because the next

01:01:19corner

01:01:19is a quick one no lift there you see car very quickly there now he's picked up that vital time

01:01:28into this last slower sector where mechanical grip is paramount that tight lining stays right to that

01:01:36curb no washing out there at all puts the power right down and only sweeps out to the edge of

01:01:42the road

01:01:42doesn't go right over the edge like so many cars did so the car obviously got terrific mechanical grip

01:01:47at those low speed corners

01:01:52so kimmy raikkonen will start 12th just 27 thousands of a second off of pole ahead of him will be

01:01:59villeneuve ralph schumacher fizichella truly and jensen button to get to that man

01:05:27World Championship, the British Grand Prix.

01:05:30Here are the results with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.

01:05:32Well, Fernando Alonso getting the pole, which he was a little bit surprised at.

01:05:36Kimi Reichel in there in second spot on that list.

01:05:39But, of course, that little yellow chicklet means he's moving to 11th.

01:05:41Jensen Button goes up to the front row.

01:05:43One Pablo Montoya in the second.

01:05:45The McLaren's will move up a row.

01:05:47And Iano Trulli, of course, will now be on row two as well.

01:05:50Rubens Barrichello there out-qualifying his teammate, Michael Schumacher, for the fourth time in a row here at Silverstone.

01:05:57Just a girl not looking too good there, either, Steve, in that second runner.

01:06:01No, he's not.

01:06:02And there's the two Schumacher brothers down in ninth and tenth.

01:06:04Ralph out-qualifying his brother there.

01:06:06Jacques Villeneuve in 11th spot.

01:06:08He out-qualifies Felipe Masser, his teammate, which will be a great result for him.

01:06:13And there is Masser, look, in 16th.

01:06:15And then Carthikeyan, Albers, Freysack are all in the usual places.

01:06:18Montero, that little chicklet, no time because the engine change he had, too.

01:06:23So the grid is set.

01:06:25And now time for the race who's drawing close.
