00:00possibly moving into a more important role with his team next year incidentally scott speed was
00:05the fastest man in gp2 practice here at the hockenheim ring we'll have that second race
00:11the sunday sprint race for you sunday morning at 6 30 a.m eastern time here on speed channel
00:22no red bull looking just a tad twitchy there as it turns into those corners well i wonder whether
00:28or not david they've changed from the soft compound tires to the hard and try and get a comparison
00:32few sparks come in from underside the williams chassis they do have tungsten skids bolted on
00:38the underside of the galley plank and four or five mounting points around the plank you may say
00:45well hang on if you're bolting tungsten skids underneath the legality plank what stops it
00:50wearing down that doesn't seem very good but they are allowed to do that they have fixed that legality
00:55flank and then put skids on the underside of it i felt and weber at the moment uh down there
01:01in 13th
01:02and 14th the position they've pretty well annexed the last four or five races after heidfeldt was on
01:08the pole at the nurburgring in the last german race in the european grand prix and since then they've just
01:14fallen right off the cliff heidfeldt leading weber in the world championship weber is of course the
01:22nominative team team leader at williams weber's not been able to drive much recently he's still
01:31suffering from the after effects of that burn he picked up at france yeah it's very painful blister
01:38i was talking to a few of the williams guys you know they said in hindsight the guy i was
01:41talking to
01:43said i think throwing water in the cop it was possibly the worst thing we could have done
01:46because all right short term you probably call the blister down but once you get that searing heat
01:51coming back from the engine inside the engine compartment inside the cockpit you effectively
01:56you produce steam as the as the water boils up you boil the water in the suit which is in
02:01the
02:01suit yeah the ferrari mechanic there's ross braun the technical director the ferrari mechanic just
02:06changing the torsion bars the springing medium onto the car they see those two little holes left and
02:11ride to the top of the cockpit well the springs are mounted on the inside yeah you never saw him
02:16do anything did you never touched anything you're right david cooltard out there still sign those
02:20ferrari hats he's loving it look well he might as well he's got anything else to do he can't get
02:25back
02:25not many drivers that do that would they yeah
02:31we've got less than 25 minutes to go in this friday practice session the rain has held off thus far
02:36hopefully it will to the end we'll be back to the hockenheim ring in a moment
02:45welcome back coming up on 22 minutes to go in the session david cooltard still out there signing
02:51autographs norbert hogg from mercedes looks on spent a lot of time talking to the press this week at the
02:57hockenheim ring about the two engine failures suffered by kimmy reikkonen and the mclaren two
03:04completely unrelated mechanical failures and the german really was at a loss for words to explain
03:11what an anomalous situation it was both of the failures something they had never seen before
03:17and could not replicate no matter how many miles they put on the engines on the dynamometer well you
03:23can see from that shot there from the onboard of montoya why they're all rushing around there because that
03:28that sky is looking pretty dreadful it's going jet black hasn't it absolutely look at it and just
03:34off in that direction is a massive campground full of tents for the weekend campers this race just about
03:40a sellout so there'll be tens of thousands of germans out there trying to party hardy in the face of
03:47that
03:48weather there is kimmy reikkonen
03:54as i mentioned earlier four previous trips to this racetrack he has yet to score a finish
04:02first retirement came as a sauber driver in the last three
04:06in a mclaren and say this about reikkonen his exits have been spectacular let's take a look back
04:12starting in 2002 his first year in the mclaren suffered a punctured tire tried to get back to
04:19the pits but with about five laps to go in the race having damaged the floor of the car the
04:23body
04:23worked the brake duck finally lost control at the last corner and he was out this was 2003 he gets
04:31off the line well but uh went straight down the outside past barriculla when they touch tires boom bounce
04:37back into ralph schumacher he was getting squeezed in there from both directions absolutely nowhere for him to
04:42go but straighten the tire wall again same tire wall and 2004 look what's gonna happen right now the
04:50wing just comes clean off the car and not even i can blame that on the driver and that same
04:56tire wall
04:57he must be getting just a bit leery about turn one yeah you can imagine as soon as that downforce
05:01comes off the back of the car reikkonen slams the steering wheel into the car in frustration which is a
05:06bit daft but i guess forgivable under the circumstances but you imagine like a thousand kilos
05:12of downforce coming off the car you're just a passenger you have absolutely no hope of
05:17controlling an f1 car with downforce off it well a thousand of course just comes up at one end yeah
05:23he has 26 points down to alonso in the world championship eight races to go including this
05:29weekend so do the math he needs to score at least three points over his spanish rival in each race
05:37of course tight confines of a formula one chassis just ahead of the pedal box there where they're
05:43trying to work on the springs well i bet you can bust your knuckles
05:50not good on the old fingernails either the problem is you just can't see to work on anything it's
05:55kind of like operating for a letter box you know there's the freeway of course that the old circuit
05:59as you can see on the right there used to go across where the freeway is now into the village
06:03of hockenheim and actually the stadium section would have been in the village but when the freeway
06:08was put down or the autobahn was put down circuit was obviously cut short that was in the early 60s
06:14in the old days the circuit went right down in town and there was a hairpin down around the old
06:18town cemetery quite a reminder and then they would come back and rock it off into the woods but in
06:24the early 60s the german economy was on the rise built the autobahn so they organized a trade-off
06:31in exchange for letting the highway come through they were given some extra land and money
06:36to build the stadium section dutch designer john hugenholtz was the architect more recently german herman
06:43tilken has done some work at the track including a fabulous new grandstand
06:51mccarlo zantas put in a few laps today done 28 so far 29 this afternoon
06:59and he did uh oh yeah yeah 27 this morning so he's had a busy day there seems to be
07:04a lot of
07:05activity in the pits you just saw mclaren earlier on working on the car and uh toyota mechanics working
07:10on the car i wonder whether or not they're anticipating this downfall before the end of the
07:14session and they want to get the car set up in wet weather conditions putting softer springs on
07:19putting softer roll bars on to give a little bit more chassis roll playing around with the wings and
07:23they may sit there then and and see if it does rain and bob as you said earlier on you
07:28want to get as
07:29much data acquisition as you can and they will want to run in wet conditions because it may well rain
07:35on
07:35sunday of course that's the forecast it's supposed to be okay tomorrow but uh could well rain on sunday
07:43interesting um situation regarding tires if it does start to rain my understanding is that if it
07:48does just a little bit of rain if it gets very damp but not really a good downpour michelin will
07:54be
07:54okay on their dry weather tires they have a big operating range and they can handle a little bit of
07:59a little bit of wet bridgestone however as soon as it starts to rain will have to dive into the
08:04pits
08:05and put intermediates on but the intermediates that bridgestone have again have got a good band of
08:10operation and they can run in the dry for a certain amount of time longer than they could in previous
08:14years so it'll be interesting to see what happens exactly how much rate of course really bridgestone's
08:21main team is that guy right there ferrari and uh they're out of the competition really just because of
08:27general lack of performance so even if bridges bridgestone are gonna have to come up with a
08:31great tire they could really do with a downpour i think the michelin foot the michelin full wet's
08:37are not a match for bridgestone so if it's gonna rain bridgestone and ferrari really want it to
08:42chuck down they want a lot of rain on sunday and of course with the regulations where they are at
08:45the
08:45moment with no warm-up on sunday if it should if it's dry all through today and tomorrow then it
08:50rains on
08:50sunday then what do you do then in terms of setup it's guesswork it is absolutely guess which is why
08:55i think
08:56these guys are kind of hoping it's gonna rain now within the last what are we looking at 10 10
09:00minutes ago well there it is 15 minutes ago my watch is wrong well this is one of the wettest
09:05months
09:05of the year old schumacher getting thought he was going to go completely off there hitting the curb
09:10in the previous turn he's trying hard he ends up there in night still a long way off on time
09:16though
09:18check out michael here 14th in the session at the moment now up to ninth after that lap
09:26which as you can see he wasn't fooling about i mean he was trying as i was saying this is
09:30one of
09:31the wettest months of the year in germany but the last time it rained on the german grand prix was
09:382000. it was wet from beginning to end back in 1988. tell you what the gp2 drivers who have a
09:45qualifying session coming up after this practice could be in the damp yeah
09:51that would be interesting it's like it's not a question of if but when the rain comes at the
09:58hockenheim ring stay with us
10:07can you feel it
10:11a degeneration
10:28Are you ready?
10:32Do you know where you are?
10:39On board with Fernando Alonso.
10:41With a little over 12 minutes remaining in the second of two one-hour Friday practice sessions for round 12
10:46of the Formula One World Championship, the German Grand Prix, which you'll see live here on, excuse me, Force of
10:53Habit, which you will see delayed here on Speed Channel.
11:00CBS picks up its fourth and final race of the year.
11:05Bob Marsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett with you, riding with the world championship leader.
11:12We must be doing some data collection, to be two seconds off of words this time, a bit wide here
11:19to stay again.
11:24The brake balance adjustment going off is brake bias adjustment is the one thing that you cannot adjust electronically on
11:31the car.
11:31You have to adjust the brake bias by a mechanical cable down to the adjustment link on the pedal box.
11:39Can you do that off the steering wheel? It's mounted on the dashboard.
11:42Flavio Briatore pinching an inch there.
11:44It is definitely getting more weight on there, Flav.
11:47And if you want to go to those supermodels, you better get rid of some of that.
11:50I think as long as that bulge in the wallet pocket remains large, he'll have no problem.
11:57Whatever is doing it, he's doing it right.
12:00Renault have been very forthright in their comments recently.
12:03There's been a lot of talk in the press that Fisichella has not been getting equal equipment.
12:08Remember this argument back from Bannerton days with Johnny Herbert and Michael Schumacher?
12:12Well, it was true. Down the ghost is...
12:13Well, exactly the same rumours are now and are coming up again that Fisichella has not been given equal equipment.
12:19But Renault, Fisichella and Alonso have been very forthright in their comments saying,
12:23Look, this is absolutely ridiculous.
12:26Our primary goal of being, our reason for being, raison d'etre for being in the sport is to win
12:32the Constructors' Championship.
12:34That's what we want to do as Renault.
12:35It would be absolutely pointless for us to give inferior equipment to our other driver.
12:42Fisichella himself says, You know, that's absolutely right.
12:44The team are giving me as much support as is possible.
12:47We've got equal equipment.
12:48We have the same engineers.
12:49We debrief together.
12:55Well, of course, you know, unfortunately, most of the blame does lie with Fisichella.
13:02He's told it all the time.
13:08Look into the Toyota garage.
13:10Entering the final minutes now of the second Friday practice.
13:14You see two Toyos in the frame.
13:16I think we're going to get quiet there.
13:18They're actually getting fairly busy.
13:19They're getting very busy.
13:20Yeah, obviously that rain is not going to come at a convenient time for these guys to be able to
13:24set their cars up for Sunday.
13:27Ralph Schumacher, he had some interesting comments in the Thursday press conference, said,
13:30I haven't been able to test much, mostly due to lingering effects of my accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
13:36Now, that was well over a month ago.
13:38I'm wondering if he wasn't hurt more badly in that final corner accident into the safer barrier than he let
13:45on.
13:45I mean, he told us on Speed Channel that he was fine.
13:48Well, he's down in 17th spot at the moment, so he's certainly not having a very good run.
13:53He's the slowest of the Toyota runners by a long way today.
13:55He's down in 17th spot.
13:59Arno Chui is up now in 8th, so he suddenly jumped up with a good lap there.
14:04And of course, Picardo's on to the Friday drive.
14:06Got 34 laps under his belt now.
14:09Session has been dominated by McLaren.
14:11Alex Burtz, Kimi Räikkönen, and Juan Pablo Montoya.
14:14First, second, and fourth in the session.
14:17And split only by Fernando Alonso's Renault.
14:23There you see the current standings.
14:28He's been pushed down to 7th now, but he did a very good time there.
14:34Michael Schumacher in 9th.
14:35They must be just scratching their head terribly.
14:37Masa's teammate, Jack Villeneuve, is currently 18th.
14:42Button and Sato down there.
14:45Sato, 17th.
14:47Villeneuve, 1.3 seconds off of the best lap by his younger teammate.
14:59Jeff Schumacher still outpaced by his teammate, Jarno Trulli.
15:048th and 11th.
15:07Blake breaks glowing there at the sacked curve.
15:15Through that double apex right-hander and on to the start-finish straightaway goes one of the German stars for
15:20the weekend on home soil.
15:22We'll be back.
15:27Welcome back.
15:28A little under five and a half minutes to go in the second Friday practice session for this weekend's German
15:33Grand Prix.
15:34We'll be with you right to the end.
15:36Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett with you.
15:38This is Jenson Button on one of his favorite racetracks.
15:42He doesn't qualify well here, but he races very well.
15:48Yeah, he's going to end up a couple of seconds lower here at least.
15:52Two and a half maybe.
15:53Unless he picks a lot up in this large sector.
15:57He actually would have qualified well here last year, but he had an engine change in the BAR Honda,
16:01and he wound up 13th on the grid and then raced all the way up to the podium.
16:06He had a great race.
16:07Terrific race with Alonso actually last year.
16:10Finally squeezed by.
16:12It's Christian Kling, whose fellow Austrian Alex Wurtz tops the timesheets with a one-minute 13.973 lap.
16:21And looking down the timesheets, all the way down to 23rd place Christian Albers,
16:25the gap first to last, 5.6 seconds.
16:28But the remarkable thing is how quickly it goes up.
16:31Behind Wurtz, Raikkonen is 6 tenths off of his Friday teammate's pace.
16:35Then Alonso, one and a half.
16:38He's down to fifth late, Ricardo Zonta, 2.1 seconds off of that lap put up by Wurtz.
16:45Yeah, they're all big gaps, and that really shows the quality of the drivers, of course,
16:49but also of the McLaren chassis and the Renault chassis.
16:53And then when you look back down to the Constructors' Championship, that's exactly the same.
16:57Renault out in front, 102 points after the Silverstone race, now into three figures.
17:02McLaren Mercedes in second place on 87.
17:07Toyota in fourth.
17:09So, I mean, it really is an indication of just how quick I think that McLaren chassis has come on
17:14song this year.
17:15I mean, they were in all sorts of trouble with that thing before, weren't they?
17:18But in the last, let's say, the last three months, the thing has really come on song.
17:22Well, of course, at Imola, you know, way back in Imola, when Raikkonen was on the pole
17:26and absolutely rocketed off into the lead, suffering a drive-shaft failure on about lap four or five.
17:31I mean, the general consensus, he would have absolutely walked that race for that.
17:35And McLaren is doing everything they can to keep the team together.
17:40It was announced recently that Adrian Newey, their technical director,
17:43whom it was thought would be leaving the team in the next year or so
17:46to perhaps step out of Formula One entirely
17:48and indulge his passion for designing racing sailboats.
17:53Instead, it's been announced that Adrian Newey will stay in an active role with McLaren.
17:57Lorraine Karthikeyan of India.
18:00Got the Jordan in some runoff.
18:03Well, that's something that Ron Dennis has always liked to do with his staff.
18:06Let's have another look at Karthikeyan.
18:08Just locking it up under braking.
18:10Ron Dennis takes it as a personal insult if you want to leave his team.
18:16It's always that I had this idea that you should keep staff at all costs.
18:20Even if they're not happy doing what they're doing,
18:22find them something else doing the factory
18:24because if they're working for McLaren,
18:25they're not working against you in a rival organisation.
18:29Well, I mean, when I went to the opening of the Paragon,
18:31you know, the new race headquarters back in May of 2004,
18:35I couldn't believe the amount of old faces I kept stumbling over who were still there.
18:39Obviously, Dave Ryan and Tyler Alexander being two of them.
18:42Tyler Alexander's been with McLaren one way or another
18:44since Bruce McCallum, first step foot in the UK in like 1963 or whatever it was.
18:51And Tyler went to work for him.
18:53He's still there.
18:55And it's right, you know, they don't move.
18:57Steve Hallam.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Dave Redding, who used to be my old boss at Benetton,
19:02went to McLaren as chief mechanic.
19:05And then he was offered the job to be at the Jaguar organisation and left.
19:10And Ron, I mean, absolutely took it as a personal insult.
19:13And as soon as Jaguar folded under pressure,
19:18Dave Redding was straight back to the McLaren organisation.
19:20And he's there now running the electronics on one of the gearbox.
19:22So Ron immediately took that guy back
19:24because he's a very good engineer, very good mechanic.
19:27And absolutely a McLaren man through and through.
19:31Robert Dornbosch, his debut with the Minardi team.
19:35Second time in as many years that Minardi has changed drivers
19:38here at the Hockenheim ring.
19:42Dornbosch staying right there with his more experienced teammate,
19:45Christian Albers.
19:47That's not Christian Albers.
19:49That's Michelle Yeoh, the actress.
19:52Jean-Totts and a Marana.
19:55Now we're hearing that all Jean-Totts not spending as much time
19:58at the plant as he used to.
20:00That may explain it.
20:01And that may explain it.
20:03And of course, you know, that may explain a lot of things.
20:05You know, it just takes a bit of a lack of interest by somebody
20:09and things sort of start falling apart.
20:11In a way, it's called getting a life, isn't it?
20:14Yeah.
20:14Well, Jean-Totts' plate has gotten a lot fuller.
20:16He's running all of Ferrari now, not just the racing operation.
20:26Well, his plate's certainly full this year,
20:28trying to keep up with this guy.
20:29He came right and into the pits.
20:31I'm surprised he's still on track.
20:35I wasn't sure at all he was going to make the pit lane speed.
20:38Not a braking for the speed limit.
20:39I think it's extraordinary.
20:40Come whistling down a little narrow pit lane
20:42that suddenly the pit wall's right there on both sides of him
20:45and they just yanked on the old brakes there.
20:47He needs a result here.
20:49Like, he needs oxygen, as David Hobbs used to say.
20:51He needs a big result.
20:53He needs to beat this guy is what he needs to do.
20:57Well, he needs to beat him,
20:58but he needs Alonso to stumble a little bit.
21:01You know, come four, fifth, sixth, something.
21:04Make some serious points up.
21:08That's something Alonso has not done much of.
21:11Other than that crash at Canada,
21:12he's been no worse than fourth in any race this year.
21:16As long as he keeps doing that,
21:18he is on his way to topping Emerson Fittipaldi
21:21as the youngest Formula One world champion of all time.
21:27He's a world champion.
21:29There's one of them.
21:311997 world champion.
21:33Jacques Villeneuve.
21:34He was in his restaurant,
21:36Newtown, in Montreal this week.
21:38Very snazzy.
21:40He's never qualified very well here.
21:42He qualified third in 98,
21:43and he's finished third three times,
21:45but never won this race.
21:4516.9 is a three-tenths of a second improvement
21:48over his previous best lap
21:50in 20 laps or so of going around here,
21:53but still a tenth or so off of his teammate.
21:57Excuse me.
21:59More than that,
22:01about eight-tenths of a second slower
22:03than his teammate Massa.
22:10The rain held off,
22:12and I can't believe it's held off.
22:14Oh, and he looked so threatening
22:15about 15 minutes ago, didn't it?
22:17Right over the track.
22:19He's going to pass north of the racetrack.
22:24There's a look from overhead
22:25down at the stadium.
22:27There you see the results.
22:28Alexander Vers, the Friday driver,
22:30won't be seeing him again.
22:31A 13.9, a very, very good time.
22:33Räikkönen, who will be driving again tomorrow,
22:35right behind him.
22:36Six-tenths off.
22:37And as you said, Bob,
22:38a quite big drop-off center.
22:40Second and a half to Alonso.
22:41Still looking strong there.
22:43Montoya right behind him.
22:45Comes on to the Friday driver.
22:47We've seen him again.
22:48Second Renault Fischkeller.
22:49Massa still hanging in there
22:50with a really good time.
22:52Viuci, the first of the Red Bulls.
22:55Across the bottom of your screen,
22:56you see a drag strip.
22:58That's a part of the show this weekend.
23:00American-style nitro-fuel dragsters
23:03and funny cars putting on a show
23:05for what's expected to be a sell-out crowd
23:09at the Hockenheim ring.
23:10Old Webber and I felt not doing too well
23:12in their BMW Williams.
23:14And look at that Rubens Barrichello
23:15down at 16th spot.
23:17He's done a few laps, too.
23:18It's not like he hasn't done many laps.
23:19He's done 18 laps.
23:22The new kitsch, Dawn Boss and Chiesa.
23:25David Coulthard, of course,
23:27he's spent most of the sessions
23:28signing hats, which was very good to win.
23:31After spinning out at Turn 1.
23:34Let's look at Alex Wurtz in the McLaren.
23:37Topping the session.
23:38Topping both sessions.
23:40Doing great work on the Friday
