00:04Hello and welcome to a great night of hoops you can feel the excitement in the air for this game
00:10it's part of the NBA Cup I'm Brian Anderson with me at the broadcast table Stan Van Gundy and Tim
00:16Legler and Ali LaForce will be reporting from the sideline and a chance to see the latest edition
00:22of the power rankings always fun to see where everyone in the league stands taking a look at
00:27the 76ers they're making moves up the standings claiming that fourth spot you know right now for
00:32the visiting team they have been impressive in these first few weeks of play making moves to
00:38advance themselves up the ranks a lot of hard working effort went into making this out now the
00:45starting group for the visitors Miller is out there with Paul Reed then it's Bailey then there's Marcus
00:50Smart and it's Porter in at the one and for Boston Tatum at the three with George at the four
00:56Pritchard at the one with White at the two and it's Keita in at the center position so Boston
01:02will get the first possession and Tim we're looking at two stingy teams here points don't come easily
01:08if you're playing either one of them well you've got to take care of the basketball for sure Brian
01:12because turnovers will be critical in this one both of these defenses apply tremendous pressure
01:18outside for Porter shoots over Pritchard and there's Porter on the assist by Miller well he's a guy they
01:25look to go to and now you see why
01:29Tata gets the bucket
01:30Tata's got his second bucket on the knife well this offense is much more effective but Tatum is making the
01:37extra pass and setting up his team
01:40count it good
01:42well how about the finish
01:44skill getting the better of size that time well you need some tricks up your sleeve to convert a shot
01:51like that and he has all of it
01:53now here's George really struggled in the loss against Milwaukee there's Tatum with the three and he buries his first
02:01look
02:01well Tatum is rightfully as confident as they come from teeth he saw that look and didn't waste
02:09to the inside here's Reid
02:12Tata with a defensive effort
02:14wow you got to commend the defensive effort right there it really made a difference
02:23a little over a minute and a half into this first quarter
02:25and that one's good Tata's got six
02:28well it's early but i love their offensive game plan to this point
02:33pass to Bailey over white
02:36Tata pulls it in
02:38now that's how you close out great effort defensively that's all about activity right there and it leads to a
02:45stop and the visitors call time here
02:49and this is their first time maxed up with the Celtics this year
02:52yeah should be an interesting feeling out
02:55well it's hard to predict this season based on what we saw last year because these teams just aren't the
03:02same as they were a year ago
03:12and about two minutes into the first quarter here well we have a chance to hear from Shams Charania
03:17he's calling in right now Shams great to have you on bud
03:20guys with all the drama surrounding the Jalen Brown trade something exciting of Mitchell Robinson was under the radar
03:26but they're analytically driven for an office see them as a significant piece
03:30and it doesn't hurt that they stole them away from the division rival New York Knicks
03:34no question okay Shams thank you Tatum gets the bucket
03:44gone two for five here in the first
03:47and Marcus Smart picks up the foul
03:50that's his first foul of the game
03:58and here are the Celtics they're on a 14-4 run
04:06Pritchard against Porter and it's Smart missing
04:10oh what a great look but an even better contest that's how you shut down the painted area
04:19Pritchard gets it to go
04:21Pritchard's got five now
04:22well they've sent a clear message they are working for a high percentage
04:28yeah right now it's all about pounding it into the paint and being physical
04:33well i hope they're not planning to give him the easy buckets all night
04:36that is a quality look you can't do it much better than that
04:41now here's Tatum we saw him with 11 points in his last game
04:49just over three and a half minutes gone here in the first
04:52Bailey the pass to Miller got it good job in the low post
04:56well he led him with the pass there almost like a quarterback timing the roof that was impressive
05:03there's Tatum with the three and again Boston with the triple
05:07well they're getting it done on both sides of the ball
05:11fantastic definitely
05:12well their game plan was flawless and they executed it perfectly
05:18here's Tatum eight points for him
05:23with the drive and finished off by Tatum
05:26well they haven't wasted any time building an early lead
05:30and from the opening tip they've been locked in just look at the score
05:34that tells you all you need to know Bailey yes and it's Miller picking up the assist
05:43Boston leading by 11.
05:48White the pass to Kata
05:52George against Miller back to Kata nice ball movement by Boston shot clock at six
05:59Tatum Tatum from long range and again Boston with the triple
06:03well just keep beating him he has been rights out
06:07here's Bailey and it falls two for three from the field so far
06:12wow what a smart play he recognizes the smaller defender on him and takes it right to the round
06:20here's Tatum
06:21here's Tatum and Boston again with the bucket
06:27got seven of 11 shots to find the mark
06:31here's Miller outside two shots two makes off to a good start
06:38and so it's Pritchard with it he brings it up for the Celtics
06:41they lead by 11. Miller with the block
06:48it's smart on the wing pounded by Tatum count that one read and so Joe Missoula decides to call
06:54a timeout he's going to take a minute to regroup with his players defeated by Milwaukee in their
06:59last game they'll try to put that one behind them yeah you can see they were out of sorts no
07:04matter which lineup they tried well let's give their opponents some credit for sensing that
07:10putting them away they were completely dominating Boston's going with almost an entirely new group
07:16here Garza's checked in for Keita Hauser comes in for Paul George Gonzalez has checked in for
07:21Jason Tatum and Shireman subbed in for Derek White Boston leading by nine
07:30here's Shireman
07:33here's Pritchard
07:36Porter pulls it in
07:37two minutes there's a minute 59 left in the first quarter here
07:41chucks it hard with one hand wow he makes it look easy yeah you could say he's
07:47single-handedly trying to get them back in this one and looking good doing it that's to Gonzalez
07:57back to Pritchard
08:02that one's off still out of sync not really what we expected you know he wants
08:07that one back there's Marshall the putback Reed
08:11lays it up and banks it in plays like that make the coach's life easy
08:16love the work lady shows on the glass to get the score on the wing Gonzalez
08:22as to Garza
08:26up top Porter and the layup is good and now just a three-point Celtic lead
08:36Boston's gone four for four so far from three-point land impressive and so Joe
08:41Missoula decides to call a timeout and we might see some changes coach potentially looking to adjust
08:57all right for this break let's take a look at the teams that were the toughest
09:01to score against last year the Celtics second and what stuck out to me is how intense both of
09:08these teams were on D last season neither giving up many points to opposing teams
09:1555 seconds left in the first quarter
09:19pass to Hauser
09:22pass to Hauser
09:23here's Pritchard got a hand on it
09:28here's Reilly no made baskets yet yep that one's good
09:38the Celtics with the lead
09:43here's Shireman
09:47Hauser right side
09:49pass to Pritchard they still need this
09:52Henry pulls it down
09:53Pritchard's gone two of seven struggling a bit
09:56you have to applaud the way this team is executed with a ball
09:59not a lot of wasted chances or opportunities they're making it look easy
10:08here's Gonzalez fires away from
10:10oh wow he drills it from deep
10:15and so it's Jason Tatum making highlights for Boston he dropped three threes in that quarter
10:20they haven't found an answer for him yet all right we'll get back to the action after this break
10:31so
10:51you
10:52you
11:01if you're just joining us we played through one quarter in this one
11:05and a look now at how the offensive approach has been going here so far for boston well the
11:11coaching staff's game plan is very clear move the ball on the perimeter and shoot the shots with no
11:18hesitation and their ball movement has been next level when your team is playing unselfishly like
11:25this that is tough to beat they've got clay thompson he's out there with the anthony melton
11:30adem bona is out there with naji marshall and it's riley in at the four listen the sideline is
11:37not happy with that now that's forcing the issue a little bit too much it's not exactly
11:43letting the game come to him
11:47and he dunks it down well this is why you love to push the pace
11:52well you don't see it much better than that taking it the length of the floor and getting
11:57right to the rim now here's garza hasn't gotten one to fall yet
12:03bonzalez attacking uses the glass to finish the layup and the celtics lead by four well defensively
12:10if you can't fight through that screen you're giving up an easy look yeah and that's the
12:16effectiveness of the two-man game right there
12:22we hear so many coaches talk about playing with speed but not as many teams do it effectively
12:27stan well every coach would love to play up tempo offensively but ba a lot of teams that run up
12:34and
12:34down end up sacrificing defense the really special teams can defend and then push the pace now here's
12:45pritchard he's got five clear foul there on the missed shot so he'll get a pair at the line boston
12:53shooting their first free throws of the game on this trip to the line
12:58at the line for two he misses the free throw
13:08good on the second one
13:11just over a minute gone here in the second quarter gives us a chance to catch up with ali la
13:17force
13:17thanks celtics coach joe mazula is focused on the details he said quote everything you do impacts
13:23winning it could be something super small but it also impacts the guy next to you can you operate
13:28with a mindset like that over the course of a journey it can pay dividends brian back to you
13:33attention to detail thanks much for the report ali and it's bona missing
13:40the celtics have gone just one of three to begin the second quarter nice ball movement by boston
13:47here's gonzalez and that one hits the back iron and that leaves his coach scratching his head
13:53because you can't get a better look than that that ties the game horn has got his first points of
13:59the night
13:59to boston has gone five of six from three-point land so far here's shireman
14:10on the wing gonzalez
14:13here's garza oh persistence pays off as they finally hit a shot
14:19and the celtics lead by two and the visitors call time here
14:36and here in the second quarter of action just a hair under two and a half minutes play
14:41back to marshall to the middle tatum with a steal
14:46they've got numbers here's the three the rebound by riley
14:53miller outside into the lane and he drops in the layup off the glass
14:58miller's got seven points in the game and boston has possession
15:05outside tatum
15:09now for those joining us now we're in the second quarter about three minutes gone by
15:15oh good d by miller
15:18gone four for seven in the second quarter
15:22a chance there to take the lead but a miss
15:28nice look inside from tatum well just another night in the office for jason tatum we've come to
15:36expect big games from him he is that special shot is up no good off the front rim
15:44well the celtics shooting is around 55 so far
15:53takes a three
15:55tatum with another miss he seems a little out of rhythm right now
15:59fires top of the key miller can't get it to go
16:03well the defense was daring him to take that shot and it paid off
16:11here's gonzalez he's got five pass to tatum to the paint here's hauser
16:17and the shot is good on the assist by tatum tatum's got four assists in the game well we see
16:23this every
16:24night now tatum has become an excellent playmaker a point forward in many ways
16:32riley's shot is off celtics lead by four
16:38here's shireman no point so far
16:44hauser passes to pritchard
16:46no good with the triple well if you take low percentage shots you are going to have difficulty
16:53making it who took him no time at all to get that one love that look they're locating his teammate
16:59and creating an easy basket and so joe mazula calls the timeout he's going to talk it over with his
17:06guys
17:15changes for boston potatoes checked in for hauser paul george comes in for gonzalez and it's white in for pritchard
17:39george against smart
17:43white the pass to george it's the trifecta and the celtics lead by five well if you create shots
17:50for him paul george is going to knock him down all night long here's bailey and that one off the
17:56back of the rim and in bailey's got eight that's just a smart play right there the right pass to
18:02a
18:02ready shooter oh here's white on the drive perfect night so far two for two i like that from white
18:12attacking the heart of that defense gotten six shots to fall out of 13 attempts here on the second
18:19here's bailey rebounded by the celtics well he's certainly more than capable of hitting that shot but
18:27somehow even with no defense he came away empty george outside
18:35pulls it 20 misses off the right iron they've been playing team basketball here yeah always making the
18:43extra pass looking to get everyone involved it's a beautiful thing celtics lead by five
18:51tatum like a frank frank coming oh tatum slams it home and that's on the defense there you can't give
19:00data those lanes and launching pads to the rim here's bailey good and the assist goes to miller
19:07assistant miller's got four assists now tonight and so it's tatum who brings up the ball for the celtics
19:13they've led by as many as 14. again boston well we expect tatum to take these shots his jumper is
19:22very
19:23consistent miller finds porter down low
19:31from the top of the key and it falls for him he's now four of seven from the field
19:39george with it
19:43from behind the arc porter pulls it in porter's got his fifth rebound in this one pass to bailey
19:54miller
19:55miller against tatum miller can't get it to go celtics lead by five
20:00here's white oh through contact white gets the finish once you're inside anything can happen
20:09somehow white made it off bailey on the wing
20:16reed passes to porter miller outside
20:23four seconds left and he takes it up and lays it in miller's got 11 points well he got hot
20:30in there
20:30last game and it's carried out when someone is rolling like this just keep feeding him that's just
20:37great coaching and the first half comes to a conclusion in a game that's been very close so far
20:43boston out in front they're up by five and we'll be right back after halftime for the start of the
20:48third quarter see you in just a bit
21:02the 2k sports halftime show brought to you by kia
21:09hi everybody we've got your favorite segment on tap as we check out how the eastern conference is
21:16shaping up
21:18checking out the celtics they've had some hiccups early on but i don't think that takes away from
21:23the potential of this team with their talent and coaching they could easily mount a challenge
21:28for the top spot before it's over
21:32and turning our attention to the first half of our game tonight bit of a rocky
21:36start for the visiting team they're not showing enough fight defensively take some pride getting
21:43some stops this is when your leader has to step in and say something yeah tough to beat a team
21:48that's shooting double nickels from the field
21:54thanks for tuning in now it's time to head back over to brian anderson for the start of the third
22:00quarter
22:12and we've got second half action for you thus far a pretty evenly contested game and you know jason
22:19tatum he's been really making it happen guys well in the first half he focused on sharing the ball
22:24and that is a new look for him well this is a nice adjustment running the offense through him tonight
22:31that's a nice little switch up
22:47pritchard at the one with white at the two tatum at the three with george at the four
22:51and it's kata in at the five spot that's who's in the game for the celtics and that's how you
22:57do it
22:57coming out of the break simple while getting a high percentage look right out of the locker room
23:04to start the second half exactly what they were looking for
23:09miller outside
23:12and he's going to the line for two the officials saw contact while he was going up
23:18and tim would you think of the teams you most enjoyed playing for what was the common denominator
23:23well ba i think chemistry and culture certainly go a long way but at the end of the day nothing
23:28beats
23:29having a lot of guys that contribute to winning i think the most fun i had was probably with the
23:34bullets in 95 96 getting great minutes on a team that was competing every night
23:43and he misses the second one as well so over to that time that's the tatum
23:53with nobody on him he buries that jumper tatum's got 23 and a big reason they have this lead is
24:01the
24:01way he's shooting the ball here's porter and then porter with the dunk well that's your point guard taking
24:08things into his own hands well that's an explosive move right there and it was perfectly turned
24:14now here's tatum 23 points in the game
24:19got a piece of it and it's going to be out of bounds boston will have another go
24:26on friday they'll take on kyrie irving and the dallas mavericks and then on sunday they'll take on jaylen
24:33johnson and the dallas mavericks and for their matchup with indiana is the second of a back-to-back
24:39for them so they might not have their usual energy but sometimes that can sharpen the team's focus
24:47that's a cold start out of the break only one of his first four has he gotten to go tatum
24:53with room
24:53to shoot off the left rim and out they haven't found their rhythm here in the third missing four of
24:59their first five attempts here's reed it doesn't go for him kato with a defensive effort
25:07here's white miller pulls it in miller's got four rebounds now
25:14the steel now the celtics on the move
25:18that's it tatum slams it in that's a big time move by jason tatum i don't know how many style
25:27points you give him on that thanks to the at&t connected cam for the up close and personal
25:32view of that slam all right let's check in with ali la force thanks a lot guys jason tatum has
25:38etched
25:38his name as one of the all-time great celtics coach mazula said to have sustained success make
25:44people around you better and be great he does it every night and he's done it for a long time
25:48tatum for his part said he intends to play his entire career in boston back to you a great organization
25:55thanks a lot ali kata pulls it in the defense really didn't do enough to alter that shot it's simply
26:03a
26:03miss now here's tatum guarded by bailey tatum drills the three and the visitors all time here
26:15one of the stories here jason tatum man is he getting it done today yeah this guy's been unstoppable in
26:21the painted area they're going to call time out and figure it out deny him the ball double him something
26:26has to change and while we have a break here were some of the top free throw shooters in the
26:32game last
26:33season number five is derrick white very steady at the line he's a guy who isn't rattled easily
26:39and that shows in his free throw shooting numbers gone three of five from the field in this third quarter
26:48here's porter another basket he's now six for seven in the contest well you love assisted hoops that's good offense
27:01on the wing tatum
27:04driving to the basket yep count it tatum's got nine points here in the second half what a performance for
27:12him on the offensive end he's been fantastic the entire game daily boston pulls it in
27:19it has got four rebounds now inside inside white gets it to go listen you're always happy with
27:28something close to the bucket like that just over three and a half minutes through the third
27:36quarter gets the bucket quarters got six points in the quarter
27:42celtics lead by six
27:47and here's george lets it go from deep porter pulls it in
27:56george with a steal
28:01knifing in george here's kata the third shot of the possession finally falls for him
28:08kid has got eight points and taking a quick look here at the hustle stats for the celtics
28:13well their activity level on defense has been impressive they're keeping their opponents off
28:19balance getting into the passing lane and have come away with a number of steel
28:24i really like their effort in transition tonight constantly pushing the pace and then turning that
28:31into points and it's tatum missing going five for nine from the floor in the third quarter
28:39and miller gets it to go the assist by bailey 15 in this one well i like the recognition there
28:46he has the size advantage and so joe mazula calls the timeout i think right now he might be looking
28:53at
28:54some adjustments
29:00austin with the changes garza comes in for kata and it's hauser in for george
29:20howser outside
29:26outside
29:27outside tatum
29:30garza up top pulls it again the miss by boston
29:35gotten six of ten shots to fall in this third quarter
29:39here's bailey boston pulls it in
29:43hauser's got four rebounds in the game white finds pritchard
29:51looking to win this cold spell it's tipped well smart has won the defensive player of the year
29:56before you have to be careful shooting around him that's a nice job of getting up the court before the
30:03defense could get organized and it results in the highest percentage look you're going to get
30:09now here's tatum he has 30. well the defense should consider themselves lucky there because he's not
30:15usually one to miss those types of looks and it's miller missing so far he hasn't done a lot of
30:21damage
30:22from three only had that one in the first half
30:27second shot opportunity and he sinks the layup garza's got his second basket of the game yeah and once again
30:34you can see why it's so important to box out well you see this all too often the effort has
30:42to be there first
30:43austin leading by six
30:49outside white
30:52pass to tatum
30:55this one for three they get it back garza and down it goes jam that one home poor defensive rebounding
31:04will not help you catch up and nothing will demoralize you more than that i love the relentlessness
31:13well good looking three there from smart he knocks down his fair share of those
31:20there's tatum with the three oh tatum slings it from deep and that's his second three of that half
31:27and his fifth overall really lighting it up marshall passes to smart
31:3734 seconds left in the third quarter got it smart has got nine well they have definitely
31:43slowed their outside attack this had far fewer three-point attacks
31:50here's tatum that one falls and the celtics lead by eight the shots are falling and he is making it
31:57look
31:58easy marshall passes to smart lets it fly and that one goes he's now recorded his fifth bucket at eight
32:06drives everybody will remember the bucket but how about that pass to set it up
32:15tatum looking it over and the three off target
32:21and so it's the boston celtics leading by six as we wrap up the quarter and it's all due to
32:28their
32:28ability to own the paint they've been dominant down low more 2k action in just a moment
32:57that's what we're going to do
33:05and it's time to bring up the state farm assist of the game you think these guys have good
33:10chemistry he knew exactly where to put the ball well coaches love unselfishness and this is exactly
33:19what they're referring to well this has been a great contest so far i imagine the fourth quarter
33:25could have more action in store for us devin porter is out there with the anthony melton
33:30then there's naji marshall then there's the dembona and it's riley in at the power forward position
