00:01Lula wins another term in Brazil, but his opponent isn't accepting defeat.
00:05Now he wants the results thrown out.
00:08Plus, President Trump goes after Abdul El-Sayed over his religion,
00:12and the Democrat fires right back.
00:14I'm here to keep a jihadist from becoming a United States senator.
00:21So, with Donald Trump, you can't blame him for this. He's just done.
00:26And two candidates, almost the same name.
00:30Now the Trump administration wants a court to step in before Alaska certifies its Senate election.
00:37The stories that matter. The facts you can trust.
00:42From across the country to around the world, this is Unbiased Updates from Straight Arrow.
00:49Hey everybody, I'm Christian Bryant. Hope you had a great weekend.
00:53Thanks for starting your Monday with us. Let's get you caught up.
00:55We begin this morning in Brazil, where the losing candidate in Sunday's presidential election is refusing to concede and wants
01:02the results thrown out.
01:04That's after President Lula won re-election, defeating the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
01:09Flavio Bolsonaro says he'll ask for the results to be annulled after a last-minute court decision extended voting by
01:16two hours Sunday.
01:17The extension was requested by both campaigns, following transportation problems in some areas and heavy rain in others.
01:25But Bolsonaro says the rules were changed in the middle of the election.
01:29Brazil's electoral court says the extra voting time did not affect the results.
01:33With all votes counted, Lula finished with nearly 52 percent, about 4.4 million votes ahead of Bolsonaro.
01:40Tens of thousands of supporters poured into the streets to celebrate his victory.
01:45Lula, a frequent critic of President Trump, is now set to begin his fourth term in January.
01:50But first, Bolsonaro is trying to overturn the results.
01:53And it's not yet clear whether his challenge will meet the legal standard to do that.
01:59Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Carina Machado is back in her home country this morning after nearly a year away, and
02:05she's already drawing big crowds.
02:07Machado made a surprise return Sunday, showing up at a church in western Venezuela, where supporters cheered as she walked
02:14inside.
02:15The Nobel Peace Prize winner hugged a priest and greeted people who had gathered to see her.
02:20And as she left, supporters surrounded her vehicle, with some running alongside it.
02:25Machado had been out of the country since December, when she emerged from hiding to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
02:31Her return comes nearly 10 months after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
02:37But Maduro's former Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, is still running the country with the Trump administration's support.
02:43And there's still no date for a new presidential election, something Machado has been pushing for.
02:48Trump was asked about Machado's return Sunday.
02:50I don't know anything about her, but I think she's a very nice woman.
02:54She gave me her Nobel Prize, so how can I say anything else?
02:59And I hope she's safe.
03:01She's a very nice woman.
03:03Machado presented Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal during a White House visit in January.
03:08Secretary of State Marco Rubio says U.S.-backed talks helped make her return possible.
03:12And he says Washington expects the Venezuelan government to respect the rights of all political groups as those talks continue.
03:20President Trump is facing criticism, including from a former political ally, over his comments about Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul
03:28El-Sayed.
03:29Trump was in Port Huron Sunday campaigning for Republican Mike Rogers, who's running against El-Sayed in one of the
03:35country's closest Senate races.
03:37During the rally, Trump called El-Sayed a jihadist and accused him of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood.
03:43El-Sayed has repeatedly denied any connection to the group, and no evidence has been presented showing he's a member.
03:50Trump also questioned whether El-Sayed should have access to classified information if elected.
03:55Here's what he said.
03:56I'm here to keep a jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States Senator.
04:05And that's the fact.
04:07We're not going to let that happen.
04:09He would be the only senator that will have to go through a metal detector before he's allowed to go
04:13into the Senate.
04:14I want him to have a metal detector.
04:18If Abdul gets to the Senate, he would have access to our nation's most closely guarded national security secrets.
04:26And his vote would wield power over our military, our borders, our homeland security, and much more than that.
04:34The comments drew criticism from Bashar Baba, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump, a group that helped the president
04:40win support from Arab American voters in 2024.
04:43Baba called the remarks, quote, out of line and racist.
04:47Rogers has also questioned El-Sayed's alleged Muslim Brotherhood connections, though he said Sunday he's never called his opponent a
04:54terrorist.
04:54El-Sayed responded at a campaign event of his own, criticizing Rogers for supporting Trump.
05:00So, with Donald Trump, you can't blame him for this.
05:04He's just dumb.
05:05You can blame him for the narcissism.
05:07You can blame him.
05:08But for Mike Rogers, can you imagine how small of a human being you have to be to know that
05:15the man in front of you has real deficits, and to just nod your head approvingly at the most ridiculous
05:22shit that the man proposes?
05:24Rogers and El-Sayed are competing for the seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
05:29Polls indicate the race remains close.
05:33Attorney General Todd Blanche is defending the Trump administration's lawsuit over Alaska's Senate race and pushing back on suggestions the
05:40president is trying to interfere with the election.
05:42The Justice Department wants to stop Alaska from certifying Senate election results that may have been affected by voter confusion.
05:50And the reason? Two candidates with nearly identical names.
05:55Republican Senator Dan Sullivan is running for re-election against Democrat Mary Peltola.
06:00But there's also Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher who says he's running on his own and isn't trying
06:07to confuse voters.
06:09Republicans argue he could take away votes from the senator.
06:12On CNN Sunday, Blanche was pressed on whether the Justice Department had identified an actual crime.
06:18There could be a crime, but the real wrong here is that Alaskans are going to be confused and will
06:23not have their vote heard.
06:24So an Alaskan intends to vote for one candidate, but is confused because of the second candidate with exactly the
06:31same name, who's voted Democrat his entire life, who donated money to the other Democrat opponent, is running.
06:37Alaska's courts have already ruled both Sullivan's can appear on the ballot.
06:42And the state has distinguished them, identifying the senator as a Republican and the incumbent.
06:47Alaska's other Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski says the Justice Department should never have filed the lawsuit.
06:53Writing on X, quote, Alaskans don't need any help voting.
06:57Trump, who says he ordered the legal challenge, defended it again Sunday.
07:01On his own, Dan Sullivan would win easily, but they've, the Democrats have put another guy named Dan Sullivan, in
07:08this case Daniel Sullivan, on the ballot.
07:11And that's very unfair. That's just outright cheating. So we're before the court to see what you can do, but
07:18people are totally confused. They shouldn't be confused when voting.
07:22Peltola, who's trying to flip the seat, says the administration is distracting from the issues voters care about and is
07:27asking a federal judge to throw out the lawsuit.
07:30I feel like this is yet another diversion from the issue that Alaskans want to talk about, which is affordability.
07:38This is the exact kind of corruption Alaskans are tired of. And, you know, I think this is a perfect
07:45example, 11 days out from the election, of corruption and desperation, honestly.
07:53The Justice Department hasn't explained how it would determine which Sullivan a voter meant to support since ballots are secret.
08:00A federal appeals court could rule as soon as today on the Trump administration's effort to block thousands of mail
08:06-in ballots from being counted in California.
08:08And after a rare Sunday hearing, two of the three judges appeared skeptical of the Justice Department's case.
08:14The Justice Department wants to throw out about 20,000 ballots it says were sent to non-citizens.
08:20But California officials say the administration's list hasn't been verified and includes eligible voters.
08:26The appeals court says it'll rule as soon as possible.
08:29The DOJ wants a decision before 1 p.m. Pacific time, Tuesday, when a lower court is scheduled to take
08:35up the case.
08:36The administration argues that waiting could allow the disputed ballots to be counted before a judge can intervene.
08:42President Trump has long criticized mail-in voting, though he's used it himself in Florida.
08:47This time, he voted early and in person Saturday at an elections office near Mar-a-Lago.
08:53The appeals court has not said exactly when it will issue its ruling.
08:58Finally this morning, it's been more than 50 years since astronauts last walked on the moon.
09:02Now NASA is laying out its next steps to get them back there.
09:06NASA says Artemis 3 is set for mid-2027 with four astronauts spending about two weeks in orbit around Earth.
09:13They'll practice docking with test versions of lunar landers built by SpaceX and Blue Origin before attempting an actual moon
09:20landing.
09:21And NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says there's pressure to get it right.
09:25And here we are today, very much in a new space race.
09:29And despite decades of accumulated knowledge and extraordinary advancements in technology, this race will be much closer than it ever
09:37needed to be.
09:38The goal is to put astronauts on the moon's south pole during Artemis 4 in 2028.
09:44NASA has fallen behind schedule in Artemis 3, but says it's still working toward that 2028 landing.
09:49And before astronauts arrive, the agency plans to start sending equipment and supplies to the lunar surface,
09:55with an initial cargo mission targeted for later this year.
