Uganda imposes 21-day Ebola quarantine on citizens returning from DR Congo
Transcript
00:08Ugandan citizens returning from the DRC will now be quarantined for 21 days at their own cost.
00:16Travelers with a history of travel to the DRC will also not be allowed to transit through Uganda by road
00:23or air, including on chartered flights.
00:25The government has also reinstated passenger locator forms for everyone entering the country.
00:32This information enables our teams to locate and follow up travelers where necessary.
00:39All travelers entering Uganda must undergo screening by port health services.
00:46There are no exemptions, including for diplomats and the UN personnel.
00:52The tighter controls come as Uganda investigates a Nigerian Ebola case involving a woman who spent time in the country
01:01before traveling to Abuja.
01:03Authorities in Uganda and Nigeria are working to establish harm movements and possible exposure.
01:09And the health ministry says the investigation has yet to provide a complete picture.
01:15Genomic sequencing means you look at the virus and see whether it's related to the one in Kenya, the one
01:22in the DRC.
01:23So we are doing that analysis, but also tracking our movements while in Uganda.
01:30And the information we have is not yet to complete.
01:33Meanwhile, Uganda says it has completed monitoring of 60 people identified as contacts of a separate Ebola case involving a
01:44Kenyan traveler.
01:45All contacts completed the required 21-day follow-up without developing symptoms.
01:50The World Health Organization says the latest developments make continued vigilance and regional coordination essential.
01:58The strengthening of the surveillance and early detection, the protection of the health care workers, the strengthening of the cross
02:07-border collaboration and the sustained investment in preparedness should really be now the main focus of our attention in order
02:15to support.
02:16And WHO remains committed to supporting the government in this endeavor.
02:20Uganda declared its own Ebola outbreak over in July and has recorded no confirmed cases since.
02:28But with transmission continuing in the DRC, authorities say vigilance must continue on both sides of the border.
