00:00A United Nations human rights expert has accused Israel of systematically targeting Palestinian journalists
00:06and destroying media infrastructure to prevent the documentation of alleged war crimes and genocide in Gaza.
00:13In a report to the UN General Assembly, Francesca Albanese calls it mediasite,
00:19saying the killing and detention of journalists, censorship and restrictions on foreign media
00:24are part of a systematic campaign to silence reporting.
00:31Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory,
00:35said that in a genocide, a systematic attack on the media is part and parcel of the crime.
00:40The local knowledge, the local understanding of the context is gone.
00:45However, however, it's absolutely outrageous that Israel prevents foreign journalists from entering.
00:52And the question is that why? It's clear because Israel doesn't want anyone to see what's happening.
01:00She also accused international news organisations and social media companies
01:04of helping to obscure Israel's actions by amplifying unverified claims,
01:09suppressing Palestinian accounts and failing to challenge dehumanising rhetoric.
01:28Citing UN sources, Albanese said Israel had killed nearly 300 journalists in Gaza and more than 700 of their family
01:36members.
01:3770 journalists were killed in retaliation for their work, she added,
01:41some of them in their homes, others in makeshift press tents or hospitals.
