01:04Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra García from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the
01:10news, so stay with us.
01:27A Brazilian Supreme Court Justice ordered a police investigation to clarify suspicions of foreign funding of former presidential candidate Fluffy
01:36of Bolsonaro's election campaign,
01:37According to a report by the newspaper The Washington Post, the investigation focuses on the alleged support that a network
01:46of donors co-founded by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance
01:49provided to the far-right presidential campaign of Flavio Bolsonaro, who recently fled Brazil and travelled to the United States
01:57amid multiple legal charges against him.
02:00It is important to note that Brazilian law strictly prohibits candidates and political parties from receiving money or any other
02:09form of financial assistance from foreign entities or governments.
02:13The decision comes days after Lula da Silva defeated Bolsonaro in the October 25th run of election, with more than
02:2051% of the votes.
02:29And the U.N. General Assembly, in other topics, at its 27th plenary session approved by a majority vote, a
02:35resolution calling on the United States for the 34th time to end the economic blockade imposed on Cuba for more
02:42than six decades.
02:43The vote shows that Cuba continues to receive majority support from the international community in its struggle against the U
02:52.S. imposed blockade.
02:57The vote results are as follows, 113 in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions. Draft Resolution A81LF5 is adopted.
03:11During his speech, and prior to receiving majority support, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez set the record straight with data
03:20revealing the reality of the U.S. blockade,
03:24its impact due to collective punishment, and its wave of maximum pressure.
03:31The United States government has unleashed a wave of pressure, intimidation, and blackmail against many member states with the coercive,
03:40illegal, immoral, and unjustified demand that they change their traditional position and adopt a stance contrary to the one they
03:48have.
03:48In a well-founded and consistent manner, they have maintained for decades as a sovereign act.
03:59The head of Cuban diplomacy reaffirmed the Cuban people's resolve in defending their independence and sovereignty.
04:15For Cuba, there is no dilemma. Under the leadership of the leader of the Cuban Revolution,
04:20we will continue to defend our independence and national sovereignty, and to reject the ambitions of conquest and domination by
04:28an imperialist power.
04:33We will do so because these are inalienable rights and irrevocable obligations of Cuba and the Cuban nation.
04:39We are protected by international law and the UN Charter.
04:54Mexico defends its position condemning the U.S. blockade against the Cuban people.
05:08Mexico defends its historically inconsistent position of condemning the economic embargo against the people of Cuba,
05:15which has been in place for more than six decades, arguing that it is not contrary to international law,
05:21and is consistent with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
05:27The economic blockade constitutes a structural obstacle to Cuba's economic and social development,
05:39with direct consequences for the well-being of its population,
05:43including shortages of food and medicines and limited access to basic services,
05:48liquidity problems in the banking system, and the energy crisis,
05:53all of which demonstrate that its effects extend beyond the economic sphere
05:57and impact the daily lives of millions of people.
06:11India, as an emerging power, denounced the blockade against Cuba,
06:15which has exacerbated the crisis in healthcare, energy, and education.
06:19In the United States, there is a 60 percent shortfall in essential medicines.
06:35Food production has declined by more than 50 percent over the last five years.
06:39Fuel restrictions have also exacerbated the ongoing energy crisis in that country.
06:45These shortages have disrupted essential services in healthcare,
06:48education, water supply, food distribution, and transportation.
06:54Mr. President, India's commitment to the Muralamo is rooted in our firm belief
06:58that international challenges are best addressed, above all, through dialogue and diplomacy,
07:02according to the United States.
07:09India, as an emerging power, denounced the blockade against Cuba,
07:13which has exacerbated the crisis in healthcare.
07:16We support the immediate and complete lifting of the trade blockade imposed on Cuba
07:29by the United States.
07:31This includes the measures with extraterritorial effect
07:34that have been in place for more than three decades.
07:37This General Assembly has called for an end to the embargo,
07:41but the policy has been in place for more than six decades.
07:45Since its imposition, restrictions have exacerbated the difficulties faced by the Cuban people.
07:51We are particularly concerned about the restrictions affecting energy.
07:54The fuel shortage and the impact on energy supplies are serious.
07:59But hospitals, schools in the hybrid system and food transportation
08:03are also preventing vital financial assistance.
08:07We are also concerned about the extraterritorial consequences of the embargo,
08:11which undermines legitimate commercial and financial relations between Cuba and other states,
08:17and also raises concerns regarding sovereign equality, non-interference,
08:22and freedom of trade and navigation at the international level.
08:26Mr. President, we continue to call for respect for Cuba's sovereignty,
08:31territorial integrity, political independence, and right to self-determination,
08:36and its determination to choose its own path free from external control or coercion.
08:49There were two days of debate during which numerous delegations denounced the consequences of US sand sanctions
08:56for the Cuban population and the extraterritorial nature of those sanctions,
09:00and despite diplomatic pressure and blackmail,
09:03120 member states voted alongside Cuba in this condemnation,
09:08which it has made every year since 1992.
09:15And now we have a short break coming up.

09:49Welcome back to From the South.
09:50In Spain, at least 68 people have died,
09:54and more than 100 have been injured in a collision between two high-speed trains
09:58near the town of Urda in the province of Toledo.
10:02Emergency crews continue to work at the scene,
10:04while authorities investigate the causes of the accident.
10:07Our correspondent, Álvaro Fragua, has more details.
10:11The accident occurred shortly before 9.00 AM near Urda,
10:16a Renfe Ave train traveling from Madrid to Seville rear,
10:20ended an IRIO train that was stationary on the same track.
10:24Several cars derailed, and two fell down an embankment.
10:28Hundreds of personnel participated in the rescue efforts,
10:32which will continue throughout the night.
10:35Canine search units will be deployed first to determine if there are any victims,
10:41and then the search and rescue efforts will continue throughout this afternoon,
10:48tonight, and for as many days as necessary to complete the rescue of any additional deceased victims.
10:57Initial investigations point to a failure in the lesbian safety system that forced several trains to stop.
11:04According to the transportation minister,
11:06the control center later authorized the Ave to resume normal operation,
11:11even though the IRIO train remained stationary,
11:14a chain of errors for which the opposition is demanding explanations from the government.
11:19Spain has a right to know what is happening with its infrastructure,
11:24what condition the tracks and safety systems are in.
11:28For his part, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has traveled to the accident site,
11:33where he expressed his condolences to the families and promised to determine who is responsible.
11:39And we will see this through to the end.
11:42If there has been negligence, it will be brought to light,
11:45and if there have been failures in the security system,
11:48they will be addressed with the utmost determination.
11:51In Erda, neighborhood solidarity has joined forces with emergency services.
11:56The sports center and a school have been set up to assist survivors and their families.
12:01Among those affected is Antonio, who managed to get off the train on his own
12:05and returned to help other injured passengers.
12:09I got out on my own.
12:12We climbed down a slope, helping those who were more impaired,
12:17and rescue crews have been arriving,
12:20although I went to car seven to help get the injured out.
12:25We made improvised stretchers out of fiberglass,
12:28and with four or six of us, we removed the injured from car seven of the AVE.
12:34Spain begins three days of official mourning for the victims of one of the worst train accidents in its history.
12:41While rescue efforts continue, the priority is to assist those affected
12:46and clarify what happened to prevent such a situation from happening again.

13:09A United Nations report warns that current global climate commitments fall drastically short
13:15of halting the dangerous levels of global warming.
13:18Projections indicate that global greenhouse gas emissions are on track to decrease by only 6% by 2035,
13:27far below the 60% reduction mandated by the scientific community to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
13:35The UN highlighted a critical shortfall in climate financing required for vulnerable nations to adopt climate disasters.
13:44Meanwhile, international agency Oxfam denounced that elite investors profit from carbon-intensive industries
13:51while simultaneously extracting revenues from disaster reconstruction efforts,
13:57compounding global inequalities across the global south.
14:09Also Haiti, in other topics, has postponed its long-awaited presidential elections until 2027
14:15as persistence in security continues to delay the country's return to constitutional order.
14:21The Provisional Electoral Council announced on Wednesday that the first round of presidential and legislative elections
14:28will take place on July 18th, 2027, with a second round and local elections scheduled for October 4th.
14:36Haiti has not held elections since 2016 and its last president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in 2021.
14:45Since then, successive transitional leaders have postponed voting amid the expansion of armed criminal groups
14:53and worsening security conditions.
14:55The vote had initially been scheduled for December 13th, but authorities began reviewing the electoral timetable earlier this month.
15:12Also, Haiti is facing a worsening hunger crisis with nearly 6 million people experiencing severe food insecurity
15:19and almost 2 million facing emergency levels, according to a new report released on Wednesday
15:25by the Integrated Food Security Phase classification.
15:28The report warns that the number of people facing severe hunger could rise to 6.35 million by mid-2027,
15:36driven by gang violence, forced displacement, soaring food and fuel prices and drought conditions linked to an intense El Niño
15:45phenomenon.
15:46Meanwhile, farmers are struggling to sustain crop production and strainful declines.
15:51In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization is distributing seeds and livestock to help vulnerable families secure food and generate
16:00income.
16:00The World Food Programme says it needs 78 million dollars to maintain its operations in Haiti through March,
16:08as humanitarian agencies call for an urgent expansion of assistance.
16:17We have some deep and acute drivers that are impacting food insecurity, violence, displacement.
16:26The issues around violence are impacting people's access to markets, access to their land, access to agricultural inputs.
16:35And then, in addition to this, of course, we have a very, very strong El Niño phenomenon,
16:41which is impacting many parts of the world.
16:45It's impacting the Caribbean.
16:46And for Haiti, this means much drier conditions than normal and higher temperatures.
16:56The animals are interesting because, in fact, we can distribute them at any time.
17:00So we are not have to wait for the planting season so they can immediately use them.
17:04It's a package of five chicken or two goats and help them to immediately be able to produce a bit
17:13of milk,
17:14to generate also eggs and to generate also meat in order to eat for themselves and to sell on the
17:20market.
17:25And now we have Second Soul Break coming up.

18:06Welcome back to From the South.
18:08The Ebola outbreak across Central and West Africa has surpassed 10,000 cases,
18:14rising global alerts over a lack of targeted vaccines.
18:17World Health Organization officials warned of severe containment challenges
18:22as deaths from the Bondi Mbunjo-Ebola variant approached 4,900,
18:27with the majority of infections concentrated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
18:32alongside confirmed cases in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.
18:36Public health interventions face critical barriers due to the absence of approved medical treatments
18:43for this specific strain, compounded by regional armed conflict and security threats against frontline medical personnel.
18:51Regional health authorities are scaling up contact tracing protocols
18:55and fuel isolation units to hold transmission across vulnerable border corridors.
19:24The independent United Nations Commission of Inquiry has accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity
19:30in the occupied West Bank.
19:32The UN report documented systematic violations by Israeli forces and state-backed settlers,
19:38concluding that acts of extermination, torture, sexual violence and persecution constitute a deliberate campaign targeting the Palestinian population.
19:49Investigators highlighted that escalating airstrikes, home demolitions and forced displacements have rendered entire communities uninhabitable,
20:00driving over 34,000 civilians from their lands without legal justification.
20:06Human rights experts warned that these coordinated aggressions form part of an ongoing policy of ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts
20:15across both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
20:33Russia says trilateral negotiations on Ukraine could resume after November 4th, although no specific date has been set.
20:41Yuri Ushakov, an advisor to President Vladimir Putin announced a development on Wednesday, noting that the timing will depend on
20:48how the situation evolves,
20:50including developments on the battlefield.
20:53Ushakov added that the composition of Russia's negotiating delegation is expected to be finalized soon, with a core team already
21:02in place.
21:02Ushakov also said that Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr
21:10are not currently being considered as potential negotiators representing Europe as a whole.
21:17Meanwhile, Moscow is holding discussions with Washington on the possibility of lifting sanctions against the Russian Direct Investment Fund,
21:25headed by Kirill Dmitriev Putin's Special Envoy.
21:35And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
