00:05good morning it is a

00:11725 chance to win some cash with
00:13us dear John life advice
00:15coming up at 735
00:17send those in dear John Jansen at gmail.com
00:20reminder we are flooded with responses
00:21if we don't get to yours this week we will get to it
00:23at some point Kirby
00:25Joseph they've
00:27started the clock 21 day window to
00:29get him back John your reaction
00:32cool
00:33whatever we get out of Kirby this
00:35year will be more than I thought we would
00:37and if he is able
00:39to play one game
00:42seven games I don't
00:43know what that number is I'm not
00:45expecting a whole lot
00:47and so if I see him out there
00:49next to Brian Branch
00:51I'll celebrate now I just
00:53want to see what does that look like
00:56and not just
00:57what it looks like for one game
00:59what does it look like
01:01in the week following and the weeks
01:03after that because
01:05it his injury has been
01:06described this is not us
01:09speculating they have
01:11talked about this
01:12degenerative
01:13and anytime you have a
01:15degenerative issue
01:16especially in the knee
01:19it's
01:20is it
01:21there's no cartilage
01:22or is there already arthritis
01:24how does that react to
01:26and you heard Dan Campbell say hey we want to get him out there running amongst football players
01:30and cutting and adjusting and coming up and and you know addressing the run as well as
01:36dropping back like all of those different things are going to affect the knee differently than him just running a
01:42straight line 40 yard dashed for training purposes
01:46yeah serious doubt that he would play at all and my belief was if he did it would be a
01:51one and done situation my concern is what you're saying yeah how does the knee hold up to the rigors
01:57of football he spent a year basically 13 months without practicing and at no point was it strong enough for
02:05him to get back out there I think we've just reached the point of I don't know find out yeah
02:10let's see let's see 21 days gives them the flexibility he's not going to play against the Vikings
02:16he could I suppose play against the Dolphins the following week right then they would hop on a plane to
02:23fly to Germany is that going to be his second game is now involving across globe flight or do they
02:30wait the entire 21 days wait till they get back from Germany and his first game is on the 22nd
02:36of November against the Bucks here's the thing though the second game after that is only four days later against
02:43the Chicago Bears not exactly a big recovery
02:45window for a guy whose knee is a stability concern well it could be I think it's going to be
02:54wait and see like we have no idea and I don't even think they have an idea like well I
02:58guess we're just at that point where it you know it's either fish or cut bait yeah and so they're
03:04going to decide to go fishing and it's if they're looking at the schedule obviously you'd love to have him
03:10against Chicago but if he were to play against Miami
03:15Miami and then they said well we want to start off with an every other week schedule does it fit
03:22well with what we're looking at not necessarily in terms of teams but okay we'll have him play against Miami
03:29and then we're not going to fly him over to Germany so he's going to get a week off a
03:34bi-week to reset to reset recover let's see how it reacts and then you play that next game Tampa
03:42Tampa and then short week
03:44the short week so you already hey it's a booked we're not playing him on a short week so you
03:49get to start him off every other week and then hopefully build the strength I know Campbell talked about building
03:55the strength in the leg because they want to be you know protect that knee as best they can yeah
03:59and and anybody that has arthritis you have a swelling issue for whatever reason also knows that when you fly
04:10for long periods of time
04:12you can you can it can just cause you to swell and so I fly across country and you know
04:18I'll go full old guy in this I wear the socks oh wow that are the compression socks and a
04:24lot of NFL teams it's standard operating procedure as soon as you get on a plane they have some of
04:30them have the ones that go all the way above the knee some of them just come up to the
04:33knee but it is a circulation issue
04:35and so how does how would he react to that long plane ride over to Germany and then playing a
04:43game and then getting on a plane and returning right away yeah I think you put it well like whatever
04:48we get from him is more than is to be expected yeah it would just be such a big lift
04:55if this guy could play because he is a ball hawk and all pro a healthy Kirby Joseph transforms a
05:01secondary I don't know that we're ever getting that version of him but I started digging
05:05up just how valuable Kirby Joseph has been to this football team he's played 55 games they're 38 and 17
05:12when Kirby Joseph plays when he gets an interception 17 and oh they've never lost if Kirby Joseph gets a
05:19pick that player would be awesome to add to this football team trying to manage Brad Holmes is waiting for
05:26okay but he might not even play before the trade deadline I don't think we can bank on him I
05:30certainly wouldn't want Brad Holmes to bank on getting that Kirby Joseph that that doesn't feel
05:35like oh we like the guys in that room that doesn't feel like a wise decision I'm just throwing it
05:42out there so I think this comes down to how much he can tolerate the pain and if we see
05:48this work this guy's gonna have to be like applauded like five minute standing ovation for what he's gonna have
05:54to play through like seriously this is going to be a personal pain tolerance thing and I think I'm open
06:03to it somewhat working
06:04if they put him if they put him if they put him on a pitch count like he's not gonna
06:09play every play he'll play situational football maybe that's how we see him broken in and then if he can
06:15do more great it's just I definitely think there's gonna be a pitch count unlike Brian Branch who they basically
06:23said you know they played him two-thirds of the time 45 of the 67 snaps I expect that number
06:29to probably go up some of it situational
06:31for him as well but if if you're looking at getting Kirby Joseph back would you rather have him for
06:3820 plays a game for the rest of the season versus 45 in each of his first three games and
06:47then he's unavailable and then he just doesn't cooperate maybe you don't see him play against the Tennessee Titans if
06:52it's working sure now you said pain tolerance John is someone who played in the league like they can shoot
07:00guys up with stuff but can you
07:01medicine is amazing can you talk through how he's gonna have to manage not you don't know his specific injury
07:06but but injuries that can be painful or nagging how do you deal with it as a pro athlete it's
07:12it's treatment around the clock and so as soon as you are done with a game obviously everybody you see
07:18guys walking around with ice bags there there are a lot of other you know rehabilitation modalities that you can
07:24use and you know he is going to have to as soon as that game is over start that process
07:31in my last year like I'd get my knee drained like twice a week and just to be able to
07:38get out on the practice field by Thursday and then the later in the year it was by Friday and
07:43can I make the trip on you know Saturday to be able to play on Sunday or to be a
07:49backup on Sunday how much pain is it on game day versus pain management during the week well so you're
07:56not
08:00there are things that there are things that you do throughout the course of the week one of them is
08:03obviously you're not out there running around but it is yes you can take medication to help manage the pain
08:10Sunday is really the only day where you want to completely mask it and can can you take enough is
08:17it safe yeah to be able to take enough to max mask it to where you can get through a
08:24game and then it's
08:25when does when does when do all the vitamins wear off that's kind of what I was thinking about yeah
08:30well my thing is is he's going to have to can he deal with his new normal and if he
08:36can then he can play but if it just gets to be too much not on game day when everything
08:42wears off and the pain is just insufferable day in day out this is your new life then you sit
08:49there and you're like all right do I go get a replacement which takes him out of the game right
08:54right and some of it is just a matter of how much does he want to play and this isn't
08:59a shot at Kirby Joseph this is not not a shot at anyone that just decides it's the pain is
09:06too uncomfortable because there are a lot of guys that would give it up give up an arm to be
09:13able to play another game like I have a personal opinion I think Patrick Mahomes has a far higher pain
09:18tolerance than Lamar Jackson I've seen Patrick Mahomes play on a high ankle sprain
09:24and push him through and persevere and that's just a personal this person can deal with this more than another
09:31person right yeah pain tolerance is different for everyone right a couple texts can't believe in 2026 we are still
09:37begging from an injured lion to be our savior welcome to the Buffalo Baltimore era of Detroit Lions football always
09:43good never great James and Redford curious to know what's been going on up until now what Kirby Joseph's been
09:49doing to strengthen the knee I mean a year plus of strengthening
09:52Russ Russ in East Point well and so what we heard from Dan Campbell yesterday was they are trying to
09:59get the injured leg to be as strong as the you know non-injured leg and that can take an
10:05extremely long time and you may never actually get there when I recovered from my Achilles my injured calf never
10:13got to the point to where my non-injured calf was this text says pain is a factor
10:20but most likely the swelling will inhibit muscle function but most likely the swelling will inhibit muscle function so you
10:23can't do what you want to do when you're out there Kirby Kirby Kirby's an excuse in the making to
10:31not make a move we thought Kirby and Branch would make us whole it just didn't work
10:37better not be the MO here there's a lot of mystery about what he's dealing with all we've heard is
10:47degenerative and even when you asked Dan about like you know what has to change and he's like well I
10:51guess nothing nothing okay again there's a lot of mystery surrounding it so yeah just piecing it together I haven't
10:59seen his medical records I haven't watched him warm up just piecing together what people have said you know Dan
11:04saying I guess
11:05nothing is nothing is nothing is nothing is really going to change and Dan has also said at the podium
11:08like at some point it's the time for football I just think they reached a point where it's like we'll
11:13find out yeah which does not mean he will ever play and if he does there's no question there's no
11:19answer to how reliably the knee will hold up to the rigors of playing a game and then getting right
11:24back out of the grind to play yet another game and another game and another game and another game I
11:28just worry about him being susceptible to a different leg injury on that leg sure that's because he's compensating
11:36since John wears compression socks to help with circulation Jeff Rieger promotes a product that might help you
11:44all right we'll get Heather's news we'll get to the two grand slam and dear John it's 97-1
