00:00South African girls are just tough.
00:02There's something in the water in South Africa, right?
00:04Cholera.
00:06Did you take one from me? What did I do?
00:08When you got me one of those, you nailed me really hard, actually.
00:13We never said it on the day.
00:15I think some of the greatest heroes in cinema
00:18are probably some of the most fucked up people
00:21that you'll ever come into contact with.
00:23And I think that's the beauty of humanity.
00:25Bad isn't just bad and good isn't just good.
00:28We're a little bit of everything.
00:30We were actively looking for something very specific to this,
00:33something where a female protagonist could kind of live in a world
00:37and play by the same roles that men get to play by.
00:40And so those are hard to find.
00:42And so we read a couple of pages of a published graphic novel
00:47and something sparked something for us
00:49and we developed it for five years and here we are.
00:52I love those freebie days where you're just like,
00:55oh, we're going to shoot in a fast food restaurant all day.
00:56I, hell yeah, I'm eating fast food all day.
00:59Doesn't have any flot after a day?
01:01Are you kidding me?
01:02Of course.
01:03I get fat like everybody else.
01:05Oh, I hate those women.
01:07I'm like, eh, just naturally isn't it.
01:10Punch you in the face.
01:13Everybody gets fat.
01:14You know, I'm a single mom and I have an incredible village
01:18that helps me raise these two beautiful kids
01:21and it just takes a moment to kind of, you know,
01:23in the mornings I have them alone
01:25and they kind of work against each other sometimes, you know,
01:28so it's like one decides to kind of freak out
01:31and then both decides to freak out.
01:33I don't know why they do that.
01:35You'd think they'd stand there and be considered and go like,
01:37oh, that one's freaking out right now.
01:39I'm not going to freak out.
01:40I'm going to be nice.
01:41And I'm just going to chill out and have my mom deal with that.
01:44But they don't do that.
01:45I really want for myself a long-term relationship
01:48and I have been in long-term relationships.
01:51And so I want that kind of,
01:53that's the kind of union that I want.
01:54The actual ceremony is not something that's important to me.
01:58Girls becoming women in our society has been so compartmentalized
02:04that you are either that or you are that.
02:08And you really don't know what that is
02:10until you're actually going through it yourself.
02:12I wish more women talked about it when I was in my 20s
02:16because there's something really encouraging about knowing that
02:20even though our society somehow wants us to believe that, you know,
02:24we're cut flowers and we wilt after a period,
02:26it's nice to hear other women kind of say that's not the case.
02:30If anything, it's my encouragement to 20-year-olds
02:33to not have nervous breakdowns
02:36and to not hit the Chardonnay too hard
02:38because it's not that bad.
02:40It's actually okay.
02:41It's not, I mean, you know,
02:43I'm a complete alcoholic, but it's great.
