00:02If you are buying your cutoff shorts, you are kind of a chunk.
00:06And I'm only saying that because they're ridiculously easy to make yourself,
00:09but they're also ridiculously easy to mess up.
00:12If you don't know the secret, I thankfully do know the secret,
00:14and it is all about finding the X.
00:21This is where most people get it wrong.
00:23They lay their jeans down and then they cut straight across,
00:26and what happens is while the front might be right,
00:28the back is way too short and it shows off your butt,
00:31the sides are way too long, the insides are way too short,
00:33and then sometimes you cut off the pockets.
00:35It's a disaster.
00:36This is the right way to do it, and it's all about the setup.
00:39So flip the jeans inside out.
00:40Now you're going to find the X where all the seams intersect where the crotch is.
00:43Grab it, pull it down, and the top is going to look a little funky and so are the legs,
00:47but this is exactly what you want.
00:48I like to start two inches from the crotch to start cutting,
00:51but you can obviously go longer or shorter, whatever your preference is,
00:54and then cut with a pair of dull scissors because it makes for a better fray,
00:59perpendicularly along the grain.
01:01This is going to give you this kind of a V shape,
01:03but that's exactly what you're looking for.
01:05Now just cut, don't measure, don't do anything, be bold, be brave.
01:08It's going to make for a better fray, I promise.
01:10Then flip it back around, throw it in the wash, throw it in the dryer,
01:13and then you're going to get the perfect pair of cutoffs.
01:15So I like to fold mine up in the front a little bit,
01:18but you are free to wear yours however you like.
01:20It is a great way to recycle your old jeans,
01:21and it only looks better the more you wear it.
