00:00Fighting the patriarchy is exhausting and I love that. Can I get that tattooed somewhere?
00:06I honestly will too.
00:15Hey guys, it's Emily Creel here with Refinery29 and I'm so excited because we are at the CMA Fest in
00:20Nashville, Tennessee
00:21and I'm sitting next to Kaylee Short. Hey girl!
00:23Kaylee, one thing I love about you is I feel like you are a phenomenal songwriter.
00:28You write songs for women, by a woman, where it gives women some complexities.
00:34How do you think country music can continue to push the envelope to incorporate more women and support the artists
00:39that we do have?
00:39I think representation is so important.
00:41It's been so hard on country radio and I just worry so much about young girls not seeing women in
00:47country
00:47and so I try to do everything I can to help with that.
00:50As far as the industry side of things go, I think it's so important for people in positions of power
00:55to just be aware of it.
00:56There's this lovely woman named Leslie Fram at CMT.
00:59She created this program called The Next Women of Country and so every year they induct a class.
01:03I was in the class of 2018.
01:05Oh, that's cool. I didn't know they did this.
01:07And they just distribute these opportunities for women that we would not get otherwise.
01:12That's how you turn the tides.
01:13You know, like we can do everything we can as female artists, whether it's working twice as hard or just
01:18creating better music,
01:19but, you know, it takes the people in suits to just do it.
01:23And I also think that women banding together is kind of a new thing.
01:26I'm so glad you brought that up because that was kind of my next question.
01:28There is sort of like this idea that like girl on girl competitive, like who's the better artist?
01:33We are genuinely rooting for each other.
01:35I don't like faking anything.
01:38And it's just, it's not easy.
01:40It's not nice.
01:40It doesn't make you feel good.
01:41And it was so much easier to just choose to not be competitive and choose to be confident enough in
01:46what you do
01:46because her success is not your failure.
01:48Honestly, that's a very like beautiful way to put it because I do feel like it is like a lot
01:52of the countrymen are like kind of banding together.
01:54Oh my gosh, we have this big group chat and we were all texting while we were sitting at the
01:57CMT Awards
01:57because we're kind of all like different places.
01:59And we were like, Carly, we're all crying because you just won like breakout video.
02:04And you were like, Lindsay, you just killed your first ever award show performance.
02:07And it's just, it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
02:09Like why wouldn't you want that?
02:10Right.
02:11We're all about, you know, owning your power and claiming your space.
02:15What's your one piece of advice that has stuck with you that you wish every woman could hear?
02:19Be so good that they can't ignore you.
02:21And I think it's a Steve Martin quote, but I just think that that's so amazing because, you know,
02:24women do get ignored in country music a lot.
02:27And it's like, if you just work hard enough and you're writing and you're being yourself and you're carving out
02:31your own lane,
02:32eventually you will strong arm everyone into opening those doors for you that they wouldn't.
02:37And I think that that's really powerful advice that I would definitely pass along.
02:40I love that.
02:41There's something to be said about like talent is important, but so is discipline.
02:45Oh, I love that.
02:45And I think, you know, everyone in this town is talented.
02:48Literally everyone.
02:50And talent is maybe 10% of it.
02:53And working hard and being nice is the other 90%.
02:55That's something I try to remember.
02:57Yeah, that's beautiful.
02:59Thank you so much for being here.
03:01Have a great rest of your weekend.
03:02Thanks for having me.
03:03I'm such a fan.
03:04Oh, we're a fan of you.
