Sophie Turner and the cast of "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" talk about what makes this new film stand out against the rest of the X-Men franchise.
Transcript
00:00If you could describe this film to someone who perhaps doesn't know the X-Men saga very well in perhaps
00:06three words, how would you describe it?
00:08Emotional.
00:10Compelling. Exciting. I'm gonna let you guys figure words.
00:15You only get one time.
00:16Okay, compelling, compelling.
00:18Spectacular.
00:19Spectacular.
00:20Exciting.
00:21Heartbreaking.
00:22Oh, good.
00:23Raw.
00:24Oh, yeah.
00:26Haven't had that one yet. Yes.
00:27I'd love to know why you think that Dark Phoenix is so special.
00:31Well, for me, I think the biggest difference is the fact that this movie is far more emotional and far
00:40more character-driven and grounded than the rest of the X-Men movies.
00:45It's kind of more of like a family drama than it is a superhero movie.
00:49Yeah, I agree. I think, you know, it's the culmination of the story and this family coming to terms with
00:56perhaps losing a member of their family or more than one member of their family.
01:02And what does that mean for the group?
01:04It's very emotional and I think it's a more intimate look into these characters' lives than the previous films.
01:12When you guys were growing up or watching films before this one, did you have a favorite member of the
01:18team?
01:20Storm.
01:20Storm, obviously.
01:21Because it looked like me. I was like, no, I could be a member of the team.
01:24Pick me.
01:26Yeah.
01:26I liked Rogue a lot.
01:28Yeah? What was the appeal?
01:29Yeah.
01:30I guess the torture of not being able to touch, you know, really hurting your boyfriend or whatever, you know,
01:37it's really sad and hard to deal with.
01:40Yet it's an amazing superpower. So, yeah, Rogue is pretty sweet.
01:45Yeah, super dope.
01:46And I'd love to hear about a scene that each of you particularly enjoyed shooting.
01:51I like the scene when our characters first meet because I like the dialogue that I have in it.
01:57I think it's really interesting when she says, you're just going to be the good little girl who, like, follows
02:02orders from that man.
02:04You know, the man, or you're going to be the most powerful creature in the universe.
02:08It's really like, it's a call to action.
02:10Yeah.
02:11And it speaks volumes to life, really, doesn't it?
02:13Absolutely.
02:14Yeah.
02:14I think we should mention Josh, our first assistant director who basically, you know,
02:20guiding this movie.
02:23He's got the best sound effects with the mic.
02:25Yeah, he's always got a mic.
02:26Yeah.
02:26He's like Janet Jackson with it.
02:27But I mean, several times he makes me laugh while I work.
02:31Yeah.
02:31It's really hard.
02:33Yeah.
02:33All right, Ty.
02:34He means well.
02:34Okay, matey.
02:36Yeah.
02:36And here comes, whoosh!
02:39Whoosh!
02:40This is like, Jean Grey gets her day.
02:42Like, it's whoosh!
02:43Big one, finally, and it's like, so female-led and like, in a way that's not like, look, we've got
02:48some women.
02:48Exactly.
02:49It's actually a sincerely and thoughtful examination of these, like, incredible characters.
02:54And they must have been amazing to work on.
02:56Did you feel that kind of energy when you were looking at the scripts and being on set and stuff?
03:00I felt it.
03:01And what's so wonderful about it is Simon wrote it three or four years ago.
03:05I mean, no, we were making it three years ago, right?
03:07Yeah.
03:07So he wrote it like five years ago.
03:10Before, like, anyone was really taught, I mean, some people were talking about the need for
03:14this in this genre.
03:15But it was before the Me Too movement became popular, before Time's Up, before all of this
03:21stuff, Simon was writing this story and focusing on the Dark Phoenix storyline.
03:27The female character was front and center.
03:29Yeah.
03:30And how amazing as well, you know, Simon has written these female characters so honestly
03:35and accurately.
03:36As a woman to, you know, see that, see a female character represented in such an honest way
03:42was so cool.
03:44And I truly, obviously Simon's an incredible writer, but I wasn't expecting that level of
03:49understanding.
03:50And that was something that I was just like, yeah.
03:53I believe that.
03:54And that was that.
