Gigi Gorgeous meets Marina Testino, who's spearheading a campaign to raise awareness of microplastics in the ocean that are causing hidden harm.
Transcript
00:00Do you know how much plastic goes into our oceans
00:02every minute of every day?
00:04The equivalent of a garbage truck load.
00:07What's even worse is these larger pieces of plastic
00:10break up into tinier pieces called microplastics.
00:14Today's Bay of the Day is Marina Testino,
00:17who started an eye-popping campaign
00:19called Hashtag We See Through,
00:22which is an investigation into how microplastics in oceans
00:25can be causing hidden harm.
00:26It is an amazing way to bring activism into fashion and photography.
00:31You have to check these photos out.
00:33Hi, Bay of the Day!
00:36So tell me a little bit about the campaign.
00:39Like, who inspired you? How did you get started?
00:41My family has always been very cautious and sustainable,
00:45and they're in the fashion industry.
00:47The fashion industry is an amazing industry,
00:49but we can do so much better and we can be more cautious with it.
00:53Right now, 60% of the fashion industry contains plastic.
00:5860% of items in the fashion industry right now
01:02are made out of plastic.
01:04That is shocking and disturbing.
01:06How did you find out about microplastics?
01:08Because it is such a detrimental thing to our society.
01:12Every summer, everyone buys new swimsuits.
01:15Yeah. Guilty.
01:16I know I do that.
01:18So as I was searching the different sustainable brands,
01:22what they're made of,
01:24I didn't know that all the sustainable swimsuits
01:26are made out of recycled.
01:29Microplastics.
01:30With plastic too.
01:32Oh!
01:32We're still shedding microplastics into the ocean,
01:35so it was really like, look,
01:38the industry has to change.
01:40The industry really has to investigate
01:41what materials they can do that don't shed plastic,
01:44that are made out of plastic.
01:45So then what I decided was,
01:47I'm going to do a campaign talking about microplastics.
01:50And that's how We See Through was born into a naked campaign.
01:55The only way of not having microplastics in your body
01:58is being naked.
02:02I saw something that I'm very passionate about.
02:05Not calling out what is wrong,
02:07but seeing how we can better stuff.
02:10Microplastics is everywhere in our life,
02:12in our clothes, in our creams, in our products.
02:15In our bodies, we're digesting them.
02:17I did not know that before today.
02:19And that is like, it is literally,
02:21it gives me goosebumps to think about it.
02:23We don't know how it's hurting our body,
02:26but obviously if you're eating plastic, it's not good.
02:30It's not going to be good for our bodies in the long run.
02:32Let's get real.
02:33It was really something that I was passionate about
02:35and I wanted other people to learn about,
02:37which 5% of the world knows about it.
02:40Yeah, I'm somebody new that knows about that because of you.
02:44Being sustainable in the fashion industry
02:46doesn't only mean just buying sustainable clothes.
02:50We need to learn how to be more circular,
02:53learn how to rent, learn how to borrow,
02:54learn how to buy secondary market.
02:57Look into your tags and see what you're buying.
03:00Like, be aware that 100% polyester is,
03:03it's not only like bad for the environment,
03:06but it's bad for your health.
03:07Looking at the products and ingredients
03:10that go into your clothing
03:11is something I'm going to start to do.
03:13I thought that was just a thing for food.
03:15There's a lot of change to be made,
03:18especially governmental change,
03:21industry change.
03:23And the problem is not, at the end of the day,
03:25it's knowledge.
03:26I feel a lot of people are not aware, don't know.
03:29So if you don't know, you can't do anything.
03:31I know the power of social media very well.
03:33I know that it can reach people that you would have never had the chance to meet.
03:37So I think it's an amazing tool to raise awareness,
03:42to show art, to really have a voice.
03:45Look, I'm going to go naked, and you know what?
03:47There's microplastic in our clothes,
03:49in our beauty, in our bathing suits.
03:52I think it's a perfect metaphor for microplastic.
03:54I mean, at the end of the day,
03:55it's what's going to be killing our world, our environment.
03:59And being completely naked almost strips that down to more of a human level.
04:04And I think that that is such a beautiful way to capture someone's attention,
04:08but then also teach them that.
04:10And I respect you for that, absolutely.
04:13And you've taught me a lot.
04:15I'm definitely, I'm going to be getting rid of all of my plastic.
04:19So I actually had a little photo shoot of myself inspired by your art,
04:23hashtag we see through,
04:25where I went out back, got some trash, and made a little fashion show of it.
04:31Amazing.
04:32I tried.
04:34We did a little runway and everything.
04:37Okay, so thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us.
04:41Um, hashtag we see through is epic and best of luck in the future.
04:47So that was our Bay of the Day, Marina Testino.
04:50Thank you so much for watching.
04:51Please support her hashtag we see through and we will see you next time.
