As easy as short hair may be in the styling department, when it comes to the growing-out process, pixies are no picnic. The days and weeks seem to move at a snail's pace as each strand takes its sweet time to sprout. The whole ordeal is a test of both our patience and creativity — it takes some seriously stealthy styling moves to make our tresses-in-transition look both polished and purposeful.

Since a time machine is out of the question, we turned to superstylist Michael Dueñas to tackle the hair situation at hand. And, as usual, he didn't disappoint. Jem, our PM/producer, emerged with a pumped-up pixie that looked anything but awkward. See for yourself, above.

00:07Hi, I'm Jem from Refinery29.
00:16I'm in the process of going out my pixie cut and I'm hoping that Michael can show me a way
00:20to glam it up a little.
00:21You got this.
00:22Begin this look by taking a deep side parting and sectioning off the top of your head in a halo
00:27pattern.
00:27Once the hair on the top of your head is secured out of the way, smooth and polish the sides
00:31and back away from your face, slicking it down nice and clean.
00:34You can spray with hairspray and then brush through.
00:37Take the clip out of the top.
00:39Using a small curling iron, curl your hair all different directions, making sure to close the cuticle of heat first.
00:45Smooth the hair with your iron and then curl.
00:47Once you've finished curling your hair, take a pomade and multiply it very well on your hands and rake it
00:52through your hair.
00:53This will break up the curls, tame frizz, but still keep a very textured look.
00:59Pumped up curls for the new spring season.
01:01Yeah.
