00:02Hey guys, it's Megan from Refinery29, and I'm here in the beauty test lab today trying
00:06out Essie's new Rep Style Snake Skin Magnetic Polish.
00:10These are $10.99, available in six shades, and you can find it at Target or any other
00:14local drug stores.
00:15So what this is is a polish with a magnet on top and iron powder in the inside, and
00:20what that does is you put the magnet over the wet polish, and that gives you a design.
00:24In this case, the design is a snake skin print, so we're going to go ahead and give this a
00:28test today.
00:29So the first thing you're going to do is apply one coat to each of your nails.
00:36Because the polish only works if the nail is wet, you're going to have to go nail by nail.
00:41So wait for all of these nails, this first coat to dry, then go one by one, putting a
00:47new coat of polish, and then passing the magnet over it.
00:50So now my first coat is dry, so I'm going to go into that second coat, followed by the magnet.
00:54So you really want to get it on thick.
00:56You don't want it to be so thin that there's really nothing to be moved around by the magnet.
01:00But at the same time, you don't want it so gloppy that it just runs onto your fingers.
01:04So I'm going to go ahead and put this thick coat on, and then I'm immediately going to
01:09grab the magnet and put it right over top.
01:12I mean literally as close as you can get without touching it.
01:15This is where things get a little dicey.
01:17One thing I'm not impressed with, there should be a guard or something between the cap and
01:22your finger so that you know how close you are to the nail.
01:24And you just hold it over there for about 15 to 20 seconds.
01:29So after I've taken it off, there's a small pattern there.
01:32It's almost like a basket weave situation going on where it's crisscrossed.
01:36So a trick I picked up from our assistant photo editor, Laura, who also was trying these
01:40out with me, is if you paint it on diagonal as opposed to up and down, you can vary the
01:46pattern
01:46a little bit.
01:46So I'm going to do that on my third nail, I'm going to give it a little bit of a
01:49direction
01:50here.
01:51So you can see on that one that the pattern is a bit more pronounced, and it's varied
01:55up a bit.
01:56So it adds a little individuality and uniqueness to the nail.
02:00So that's it.
02:01I've got my magnetic polish print on my nails.
02:04And one thing I did notice is that if I didn't get the pronounced pattern I was going for with
02:09that first try with the magnet, what I did is I went back over my nails with a top coat
02:14and then used the magnet again while that top coat was wet.
02:17And that helped make things a bit more distinct.
02:20I'm going to go ahead and give this a pass.
02:22I'm usually not into magnetic polishes, they seemed a little bit gimmicky.
02:25But for this one, because of the cool pattern it creates, and because the colors are really
02:29stylized, I love the metallic, I really like the options for this.
