Watch as Refinery29's senior beauty editor, Megan, gives this odd little device a try — oh, and in the process, learn how to use it and pick up some useful mascara application techniques, too.

00:04Hey guys, it's Megan from Refinery29, and I'm here in the Beauty Test Lab today trying out
00:08Pop Beauty's Peak Performance Mascara. So this is a little different from what you may be used to.
00:14Most mascaras have a wand applicator. This is actually a comb. So what this does is the
00:21mascara comes out through the comb, and you then brush it onto your lashes. And it's supposed to
00:27volumize, lengthen, and also give a shiny kind of lacquered effect to the lashes. You can
00:32wear it alone, or you can wear it on top of your regular mascara to add, kind of as a
00:37top
00:37coat. So I don't have any mascara on right now, and I'm going to give it a go on bare
00:42lashes.
00:42So let's give it a try. So the first thing you do is you twist the bottom. You can see
00:49it's come up through here. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to take it and I'm going
00:54to comb it into my lashes. And this is the first time I've tried anything like this before,
00:59so we'll see how it goes. So the instructions say to hit the root of your lash and wiggle
01:05upwards. So I'm going right here on the outside, and I'm just wiggling it in. And you can see
01:13it's starting to apply. This is a little odd because I'm used to using a wand, but I do notice
01:22this gives me a little bit more precision. But what I'm noticing is it's really grabbing
01:26each lash and it's definitely separating. You just have to be careful when you're pushing
01:31it that you don't push it up against your eye because I'm getting some marks against
01:35my eyelid. A good way to get rid of that is to put your hand behind your eyelashes, and
01:40that way it can press up against it and you don't get those weird little marks.
01:51And I'm trying to get in there and wiggle so I get that fullness at the lash line. So
02:00I'm actually pleasantly surprised by this mascara. You know, I went into it a little biased thinking
02:05I was going to hate it because it looks a little contrived, it looks a little gimmicky, and it
02:09looks complicated. But it's really, really easy, and the design is genius. Unlike a traditional
02:14mascara wand, which you can pull out and usually has way too much product on it, I actually
02:19always end up wiping off excess product. This, with one click, you get the perfect amount,
02:23and you can really control how much formula you get on there. So if you can do a little
02:28bit and get a really nice, light daytime look, or you can keep combing and building and get
02:33something a little sexier, a little more dramatic, like I've done here. And I also like the comb
02:37because it really does get every last lash. Even these little ones right here in the inner
02:42corner that are always difficult to get were completely easy to do with this. I'm really
02:47liking the formula. That patent leather black shiny effect is really neat. It's different,
02:51it's cool, and it creates a cool focal point of the eye. So I'm going to have to go ahead
02:56and say I give this a pass. It is $20, which is a little bit expensive, but it's not completely
03:01out of range of what other mascaras are on the market right now. And I just think overall,
03:06it's a really innovative design and it does what it says. So thumbs up in my book.
