00:05Hi, I'm Saya from Refinery29 and today in the Beauty Test Lab we are trying out the Top Styler
00:11by InStyler. It's a new method of curling your hair and we're going to try it out and see what
00:15I think. The Top Styler retails for around $100 from Ulta and it comes with this whole case and
00:22there's these individual pods that you roll into your hair and you can set them and then just go
00:26about your business. It's supposedly pretty easy so we're going to see how this actually works. The
00:31way you do it is you section out individual pieces of your hair and you roll it around your finger
00:36the
00:36way that you would if it were a curling iron and then you just clip the pod onto the section
00:42of
00:42hair and that's where it gets a little tricky. So you do the first section and then you just keep
00:51choosing sections. You have to be careful not to burn your finger it's kind of a user hazard with
01:01these pods. Now one of the problems that I'm running into is once you get the top section
01:09of your hair done the back and the bottom sections are a lot harder to stay in the roll when
01:16you're
01:16putting the pod on especially if you have slipperier or thinner Norwegian hair like I do. I'm gonna try
01:24the top section again it's definitely the easiest part. This tool comes with its own comb to separate
01:33the pieces but I actually found that the comb was a little trickier than using my finger so I am
01:38just
01:39going on my own. I personally don't think that you have to be too uniform when you're choosing the
01:46sections because the whole point is to get these messy curls so don't worry about it if you're not
01:53choosing even pieces. Again the back of the head is the trickiest part. The kit comes with two
02:08different size pods. You have the larger size for the larger pieces of hair. I would recommend using
02:13those for the thicker top of your head and then there's the smaller pods. It also comes with extras
02:18so if you use them up you can place them on the heater and heat them up for more pods.
02:24So now I
02:24have all the pods in my hair. The back was definitely the trickiest. It took a lot of finagling with
02:30your
02:30hands and you definitely need a second mirror if you want to get all the pieces of your hair in
02:34and
02:35now I just let it set and it says to let it set for about five to twenty minutes. The
02:38longer you
02:39let it set the longer your curls will stay so I suppose I would recommend the 20 minutes because
02:44I don't know who wants their curls to stay only for a little bit so I'm going to let them
02:48set and
02:49then I'll take them out and see what it looks like. Okay so now the curls are set and it's
02:53time for the
02:54big reveal. So I look a little crazy. Some of the curls stayed really well and some of the curls
03:01didn't even curl at all so I'm a little nervous to see what it looks like when I brush my
03:05hair.
03:08So this is the final product and it may have been my bad but I'm going to have to give
03:14this product
03:14a fail even though I'm a beginner and kind of a novice when it comes to hot rollers and curling
03:19irons. I think this product definitely wasn't user-friendly. The instructions could have been a lot
03:23clearer. There's a major learning curve when it comes to this and as you can see this side is not
03:29very curly at all and this side is extremely curly so the only way to fix this would be to
03:34straighten
03:35this side or to use a curling iron on this side and honestly who has time for that in the
03:40morning?
03:41The reason that you would use this product is basically to save time and I just don't see how
03:46this would work out. So I'm sorry Top Styler I'm going to have to give you a fail.
03:59And I think that's fine.
