00:05Hi guys, it's Megan from Refinery29. I'm here in our beauty test lab today to try out the
00:09Amica Triple Barrel Pro Curler Set. This is a curling iron that features three interchangeable
00:15rods that come in different sizes. There's a small one, there's a medium one, and there's a
00:19large barrel. And what this does is allows you to create a more natural wave and curl because
00:25you're mixing up the size of the curl and the shape of the curl. So this starts off with
00:32these little knobs here, and that's how you start the process of taking them off. So say
00:37I wanted to start with the big one first. I push these two knobs together and I pull.
00:43As you can see, it takes a little bit of maneuvering, which I found a little bit annoying. The other
00:49thing is this has to be off before you can switch the rods out. So that's very important, otherwise
00:54you will burn yourself. And I have brought along my own heat-resistant glove. This set
00:59does not come with it, which I think is kind of a big fail for that because when you're working
01:04with clipless curling irons, the chances of getting burned are much higher. So you really
01:10need to have something like this, especially if you're a klutz like me. Otherwise, you'll
01:14have burns all over your hands. So I'm going to put on my glove first. And you have to line
01:20up the sides on the inside. So I'm lining it up. Again, this takes a little bit of wiggling
01:27and maneuvering. There we go. So then I'm going to turn on my iron. One of the great things
01:34about this is it heats up so fast. This literally takes about 10 seconds to get to 360 degrees,
01:40which is great because you're not sitting around waiting for it to heat up. So another thing to
01:47keep in mind with this is that it has the swivel bottom, which I love because when you're curling
01:52your hair, you don't want to get all wrapped up because you're doing kind of gymnastics to
01:56get your hands where they need to be to get the proper curl. So that's kind of a cool feature
02:01that I really like. So I'm up to 300 degrees already. It was really quick. So I'm going to
02:08curl my hair. And I'm going to do it in the same method that we did in our How to
02:11Use a
02:11Curling Iron video, which you should have already mastered by now. And I'm going to
02:15take my hair and wrap it around the barrel. It's a good idea to section your hair off before
02:24you do this, but since I'm just showing you this one, I'm going to do it really quick.
02:27So then you hold it here for about 10 seconds. And since I'm using the larger barrel, I'm going
02:33to get a looser wave. So I'm going to let go, let it fall. And you see I've got a
02:38little
02:38bit of a bend right here. So this is a very soft, loose wave. So now I want to switch
02:43out
02:44my barrel and try a smaller one to mix up the waves. The problem with this is you now
02:48have to turn off the curling iron and it does not cool down as fast as it heats up. So
02:55you're
02:56left waiting for quite a bit of time for it to cool down before you can switch to the next
03:00one.
03:01Obviously when you're curling your hair, the last thing you want to do is add more time
03:04onto that. So for me, I found that to be a big minus. Also the price is $225. I think
03:12the thinking behind that is you're getting three curling irons in one. But again, who
03:16needs three different curling irons? If you're looking to add variety and a difference in
03:21size to your curls, a great tip is to use a one and a half inch curling iron. And then
03:27for certain pieces, just grab the curl before it's cooled down and pull on it. This will separate
03:33the curl and make it a little looser and give you that variety of texture and shape that
03:37you're looking for. So unfortunately I'm going to have to say that this is a fail in the Beauty
03:42Test Lab. I think it has potential and I like the idea of the interchangeable rods, but with
03:48all of the time that you're wasting trying to wait for it to cool down and switch things
03:52out, it can get very frustrating, especially if you're in a hurry or you're not looking to
03:57spend hours on your hair. And the price, again, is just a little too high for what it is.
04:01I think it's a better idea just to invest in a really great one and a half inch curling
04:05iron. That way you get that flexibility to create the waves that you're looking for in
04:10different sizes without having to spend the money on something that you probably won't
04:14end up using all that often because of the time consuming nature of it.
