Pastel makeup, while pretty, does not have the best reputation. Most people's first thought when faced with a seafoam green liner or a baby blue shadow is either tea party or pre-teens. Well, put aside your preconceived notions because there actually is a way to make those super-girly shades look sophisticated — for proof, just take a gander at all the dreamy pastel looks that dominated the spring runways.

00:06Today I'm facing my fears. I am double daring myself to try pastel eyes.
00:11The pastel eye. You're afraid of it. What's going on?
00:15I mean, colors, prints, all of it. I like neutrals. I like maybes. I wear toast eyeshadow every day.
00:22It's just, it feels like a lot of makeup.
00:25Well, I love nude and neutral for you. I think it's beautiful with your skin, but if you want something
00:30fun, you want to wear something that's great for summer, I think color is the way to go.
00:35What I'd love to do is show you how you can make the right choices and the right application so
00:40it looks easy, effortless, and beautiful every time.
00:43So the first thing we want to do is find an application that feels very comfortable for you.
00:47I notice now you're wearing a black eyeliner, and pastel with black is a big trend for the season.
00:53So what I want to show you how to do is incorporate your black line and black lash into what
00:58we're doing, and then bring it to the next level.
01:00So you've started with a black liquid line. I'm just going to line over that to give it a little
01:05depth and dimension.
01:06The next thing to do is think about color choice. And if we think about color theory, we know that
01:12colors that lay next to each other on the color wheel always work together.
01:16So we can go with something in the red family, something in the violet family, and something in the blue
01:21family, and we call those analogous colors.
01:23So my first step is a wash of color on the eye. I'm going to go with something in the
01:28red family with a little bit of pink to it.
01:30I'm using a really soft brush because a soft brush is going to depolize it less color. And I'm just
01:36sweeping it right across the lid from crease to lash.
01:40Step two is my pencil. We're going to use a blue pencil, and I know that seems like it's going
01:44to be really exaggerated, but just a soft line working with your black liquid is going to be a really
01:50beautiful way to bring in these pastels.
01:52And then we tie it all together with our violet mascara. This is just going to give a tint of
01:57color to the lash. You can use it on its own, or you can use it over black mascara, but
02:03what that will do is just give you a sense of fun to your makeup.
02:06Do you want to take a look? All right. I'm nervous. Okay. I get it. It's pretty. It's a lot.
02:15It's pretty, and it's timely, and it's fashion-forward. Do you want to try it yourself? All right. Okay.
02:20The nice thing about makeup now is you don't have to embrace every trend, but you can incorporate bits of
02:25that trend, like just the shadow, or just the liner, or just the purple mascara into your other makeup looks,
02:31and it's a great way to get a touch of that trend. What do you think?
02:35I am surprised by it. I think it feels brighter and more natural on my face than I would have
02:41guessed it was going to, and I think that on a day when I'd be willing to take a risk,
02:46I could totally see myself doing this.
02:47And it's a really great way for women to just have fun with makeup. A lot of times makeup can
02:52be overwhelming. Pastels feel very daunting. I'm glad we pushed you to try this.
02:57Thank you so much, James. And thanks for watching Refinery29.
