When we think about frosted eyeshadow, we tend to think of some low points in our lives — namely, our insistence on mimicking our Barbie's pale blue shadow back in junior high. Talk about some unfortunate school pictures. But, since we generally feel like there's no such thing as a color that can't be worn well, we decided to call in an expert to show us how to modernize this frosty look.

00:04You have to like sing a song, like, I'm a Barbie girl, come on Barbie, let's go party.
00:10That song could never make a comeback.
00:12Come on Barbie, let's go party.
00:19Today, I'm conquering my fear of frosted eye makeup.
00:23What is your fear about frosted shadows that you have?
00:27I have multiple fears.
00:28One, it takes me back to Barbies in the 80s, and it also takes me back to my preteen years
00:35when I was really into frosted pastel makeup all over my face.
00:40I think what you need is to ground it a little bit, maybe with like a coal liner right at
00:45the base so it gives a little more grounding so it doesn't feel so intense.
00:49So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the liner close to the eye, I'm going to
00:52mark
00:52out just a little bit roughing it along the edge of the eye area.
00:55This will give it a nice lash base.
00:58So now I'm going to use a little bit of a blue shadow and we're going to put it close
01:02and
01:02tight right against the lid.
01:05Now what I'm going to take is a little bit more of a shimmery one and I'm going to lay
01:09it just across the base just to give it a little bit more of a shine.
01:14And I'm going to work just a little bit on the inside right here to get it a little pop.
01:19What I'm going to have you do is look down and I'm going to just take a soft brush and
01:22I'm just going to blend this ever so lightly along the edge.
01:25Now I'm going to give it just a little bit more drama right along the edge on the inside
01:29of the bottom with that coal liner.
01:31Right on the outside bringing it in.
01:34Take a look.
01:35Oh wow.
01:37That's awesome.
01:38So now it's your turn to do the other side.
01:39Do you think you can do it?
01:41I don't know.
01:42I'm going to try.
01:44I think you can do it.
01:45And you're going to give a little bit of a cat eye right along the lash line.
01:48You're going to take that blue eye shadow and you're going to put it right onto the lid,
01:52patting it gently and bring it right up to where the crease would be.
01:56And you're going to bring it right into the front at the bottom.
01:59What this is doing is it's just going to pull the eye up a little bit and highlight that
02:02part of the eye area.
02:03I'm going to give a very soft brush and you're just going to blend just in the crease area
02:08ever so lightly just to smooth it out.
02:10And then this for the bottom is the coal liner again just to give a little more drama at the
02:15bottom.
02:16It was actually really easy.
02:17I was a little bit apprehensive because it seemed like a lot of steps but it went really fast
02:21and I think it turned out really well.
02:22Ready to take it out to dinner tonight?
02:24I think I am.
02:25Awesome.
02:25I think I have conquered my fear.
02:26Good.
02:26Thank you so much.
02:27I'm glad I could help.
02:28And thank you for watching Refinery29.
