As much as we like to fancy ourselves mixologists, anyone who's ever had the misfortune of testing out our clumsy attempts at a homemade mango mojito knows otherwise. Hey, how were we supposed to know there's not supposed to be vermouth in there. What's that you say? There are books full of recipes for that? Oh...whoops.

But, it's not just our libations where we have mixing drama. The same can unfortunately be said for our makeup mixology — we love the idea of blending our own custom eye and lip hues, but every time we attempt it at home, we end up with colors that are either muddy or just not all that pretty. Kind of defeats the purpose, no?

We were starting to think all those articles about doubling our lipstick wardrobe by mixing our own colors were total BS, until Stila pro makeup artist Sarah Lucero showed us the error of our ways. Watch the video as she shows our photo assistant Lilac how to blend two seemingly opposite hues into a totally unique, downright stunning new shade. Bonus: She also reveals her pro trick for applying lipstick flawlessly using an eyeshadow brush. Check it out!

00:08Hi, I'm Sarah Lucero, and I'm a Stila Pro makeup artist, and I'm here to show you how
00:12to create your own custom lip colors.
00:14A great trick in creating your own custom lip color is mixing and matching what you
00:18already own at home.
00:19You don't have to have a ton of lipsticks to create the perfect shade.
00:23You actually could create it by mixing what you already have.
00:26I want to create a bit more of a pop of color on lilac.
00:29She's got beautiful skin, so I want to boost that and bring it out even more.
00:34We're going to mix a bright orange and a purple to create that perfect rose, so you'll have
00:39your own custom lip color.
00:40So I start off by creating my own custom palette on the back of my hand, and then you mix
00:45the
00:45two together.
00:46And I'm using a great Stila brush with silicone, and it's ideal for anything that's creamy or
00:52a liquid.
00:52So do equal parts, and you start to create your custom lip color right here.
00:57The beauty of having the colors mixed on the back of your hand allows you to really see
01:02what you're doing and adding a little bit more orange if you need more pop, or if it
01:05gets too bright, take a little bit more purple, and once you see your ideal shade, you apply.
01:10I like to start my initial application in the center of the lower lip.
01:15This keeps the texture very controlled and not too creamy or heavy, so really allow yourself
01:22to build and create that perfect layer, and then add intensity if you need to.
01:27This being a full coverage texture and color gives you that even, perfect lip tone.
01:34So now that she's all set, I hope that you go home and go through your makeup tour, have
01:38fun creating your own custom lip color.
01:40Don't be afraid to experiment, because you might create a color you never knew existed.
