00:00Hi there and welcome to the latest update from the Met Office.
00:03High pressure dominates the weather as we start the new week.
00:06Not just any high, this is where the high pressure was sitting at 8am on Monday when
00:11Tulloch Bridge recorded a pressure reading of 1,044.2 hectopascals, making it the highest
00:19pressure over the UK since November 1999.
00:24However, despite how strong this high pressure is, it's no guarantee that everywhere will
00:29be dry or indeed sunny because the jet stream is coming in over the top of the UK but then
00:34dipping south and we've got this upper low pressure close to the southeast of the country
00:38and a wind direction that is picking up cloud and moisture from the North Sea, northeasterly
00:44winds in other words for many northern and eastern parts of the country.
00:47And to give you an idea of where the showers will be distributed over the next couple of
00:52days, this is the 24 hour rain totals for Monday, white areas showing where it's going to stay
00:57entirely dry but we've got these streams of showers and light drizzly showers for the
01:01north and east of Scotland but more especially into the east of England, shower streams coming
01:06in even as far as the Midlands and East Wales at times on Monday, more especially into Monday
01:12night and Tuesday these shower streams from the North Sea continue.
01:16And some darker blues here in the far southeast indicating that Kent will be particularly prone
01:20to shower streams and could get as much as 10 to 20 millimetres in one or two spots but very
01:28uneven distributions with these showers so very localised accumulations not doing a great
01:35deal to help the low reservoir situation in the south.
01:39Now the showers as you can see will continue to come into the east and central parts of England
01:44during Monday afternoon. A lot of cloud accompanying these showers but there will be some sunny spells
01:50towards the west of England into West Wales. The greater chance of sunshine will be through
01:55central and western Scotland, Northern Ireland where blue skies are expected throughout Monday
02:00but cloudier skies in the north and east of Scotland and some drizzly showers here.
02:05Where we've got the sunshine, where we've got the light winds, pleasant enough, 10 to 12 Celsius
02:10close to average but where we've got that brisk wind coming in from the northeast, that's going
02:14to make it feel on the cool side and that wind will continue across the north of Scotland
02:20east of Scotland and eastern England overnight. And again cloudy spells coming in from the
02:25north sea extending as far as east Wales, the midlands, some showers here but the more frequent
02:31and heavier showers will always be towards east Anglia and the southeast especially Kent where
02:36the showers will become heavier through the night with that brisk wind. That's going to keep
02:41temperatures in the east around seven to nine Celsius. But where we've got the clearer skies
02:47for Northern Ireland, western Scotland, northwest England and lighter winds, temperatures falling away,
02:53a frost in places and as low as minus three Celsius for sheltered parts of Northern Ireland
02:57where we'll also have some dense fog patches forming overnight, some freezing fog to start the day
03:02on Tuesday. That'll lift during the first few hours of the day as some patchy cloud comes in from the
03:07east
03:08and again we'll see variable cloud amounts across the UK throughout Tuesday, some brighter interludes
03:14coming through just about anywhere. But you can see those showers just continue to drive in across
03:20parts of say Suffolk, Essex, Kent making it into London and as far as Portsmouth perhaps at times as
03:27well. Eastern Scotland, one or two drizzly showers, the odd spot of rain for eastern parts of Northern Ireland.
03:32Otherwise it's mostly dry towards the northwest, best of the sunshine in the northwest, cloudier towards
03:38the southeast and temperatures similar to Monday, close to average but feeling cold where we've got
03:44that brisk wind coming from the North Sea. Little change then as we go through the next few days with
03:49that very strong area of high pressure holding firm towards the northwest and then more towards the
03:55north of the UK as we end Tuesday. So the wind swinging around to more of an easterly, picking up
04:01some
04:01strength in the south on Wednesday but continuing to bring a lot of dry weather to the UK, further
04:07showers into the east at times. We'll always have more on our YouTube channel, there'll be a weekend
04:12forecast later on Monday as well with Alex Burkle. Bye bye.
