00:02Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers, becoming the first
00:07Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
00:09El-Sayed, a former public health official, will take over the seat held by retiring Democratic
00:14Senator Gary Peters in January.
00:16His religion became a target during the campaign, with Trump and Rogers calling him a jihadist.
00:21But in his victory speech, El-Sayed leaned into his faith.
00:35And I am so proud and honored to stand here as your senator-elect from the great state
00:42of Michigan.
00:44Up until right about now, you might have noticed, I always say, Inshallah, or God willing, whenever
00:51the outcome of this race was mentioned.
00:54But today, tonight, we can turn that, Inshallah, into an Alhamdulillah.
01:02Alhamdulillah means praise be to God.
01:04As of early this morning, Rogers had not formally conceded the race.
