00:00What's your thoughts again on C.J. Carter?
00:02There's a lot of people thinking that he's going to be a first-round draft choice.
00:04Before we get to the NFL, some of your takeaways on him as a quarterback prospect.
00:11Yeah, I think he's a good prospect.
00:12I just think that he gets off balance a little bit.
00:15You know, it's an easy thing to fix.
00:17By that, I mean, you know, the shoulders aren't flat and knees bent.
00:21When he misses, those things, you guys, are easy to fix,
00:26make him real consistent with their accuracy.
00:28But I think he's got a real good future.
00:31Coach, how much, when you see a prospect coming out of college, for you,
00:36how much is that when you have to sit back and look at some of the technique
00:40that the guys have when they're in college?
00:42Is a lot of the things that kids are doing in college, when you get them in the pros,
00:47how much do you really have to work on the mechanics of a player?
00:51You know, most of those guys are just inherently pretty accurate.
00:54You can make them much more consistent just by getting under control and balance
00:58and kind of groove them up a little bit.
01:00But the thing I always look at in guys coming out is their processing,
01:04how quick they see things and get rid of it, number one.
01:06Of course, how naturally accurate they are.
01:08Accurate under duress.
01:10You know, accurate when they're not in balance.
01:12Accurate when somebody's hanging on to them, those kinds of things.
01:15And those guys that are accurate in duress and will stand in and make throws under pressure,
01:21I mean, that's what the NFL is.
01:22And, you know, so many times, it's just like Fields when he's at Ohio State.
01:26He was sacked like 55 times in one season or whatever ridiculous number that was.
01:31He just holds the ball.
01:32And that doesn't correlate to the NFL.
01:35You know, he's going to have problems.
01:37So those are the kinds of things you look at.
01:39You want to see guys just getting hammered and still making good throws.
01:42That's the one thing that made us fall in love with Kurt when I watched him in the Europe,
01:46you know, over there in the World League, is that he would just get shellacked.
01:50A guy would just blast him.
01:52He makes this miraculous throw down the field.
01:54Those guys are hard to find.
01:56Boy, I'll tell you, Coach, you mentioned one of the most important things for a roster
02:00and for a teammate, too.
02:02Every time I used to watch a quarterback get killed in the pocket, for me as my teammate,
02:07I'm like, that guy's standing in there, man.
02:09I'll tell you what.
02:09You see a lot of guys with happy feet.
02:12And to me, when you're a football team and you see your quarterback taking a beating back there
02:16and still delivering the ball and making big plays, that inspires a roster when you see that.
02:22How important is that intangible to a quarterback for you?
02:26Well, that kind of toughness, I mean, first of all, he's, you know,
02:28when things are going bad in the sideline, the first guy they look to is the head coach
02:32and the quarterback, you know.
02:33And if you don't think your guy's tough and up to the, you know, handling those kinds of pressures
02:38and physically tough, it's hard, you know, because, you know, you're looking to him for answers
02:43when things get really nasty.
02:45And when you know a guy's tough like that, he's going to hang in and try and make throws
02:49and get splattered.
02:51It's a morale booster for sure.
02:53I had a situation where I had a wide receiver.
02:55I won't tell you who it was when he first came in.
02:57He was, you know, he wasn't really running his routes fast.
03:00It's like we practice at full speed, you know, and he wasn't doing that.
03:04And so I put him back at quarterback.
03:06As you stand back here, you know, as a live pass, you be the quarterback.
03:09I want you to see what the quarterback sees.
03:11And you're lollygagging down the field and he's waiting for you to come out of that route.
03:14Let's take a look at this.
03:15He just got hammered.
03:16He had a different perspective on what the quarterback goes through.
