With the Michigan vs. Michigan State matchup buried on Peacock and fan apathy at an all-time high, Mike Valenti and Rico Beard take matters into their own hands to inject some life into rivalry week.

00:00How about D.J. Reid, who's mispracticed all week?

00:32He could be back as soon as this month.

01:34Happy Friday, everybody.
01:36TJ Lang will join us at 3 o'clock.
01:39We're going to try to mix in whatever this Michigan-Michigan State game is
01:44and then an interesting spot for the Lions.
01:47We've got some audio from the morning show for you.
01:50Someone nervous about the Lions.
01:52I think it's interesting.
01:52But I want to go behind the curtain for a moment
01:56because we were just having some fun.
01:59And Paul originally is from Florida,
02:01but Paul's lived here for damn near 15 years now.
02:04But we were going in the way back machine with Michigan and Michigan State.
02:09I mean, some Rico Beard pre-PhD fan-level stuff
02:14and showing Paul when college football was college football.
02:18And really, some of the moments that made the rivalry special.
02:23Yeah, watch this flag, Paul.
02:25Uh-oh.
02:26But it's crazy because we're sitting here now.
02:31This used to be one of the biggest shows of the year.
02:34And candidly, it didn't matter.
02:38Like, Michigan usually was pretty good, but they had some down years.
02:41And State was usually pretty down.
02:44But State certainly had a nice run of up years.
02:46But it just, it used to be such a fun show.
02:52And yet, we're sitting here as a show.
02:54And we're like, okay, what do we, you can't ask people,
02:58are you going to watch?
03:00The game is on Peacock.
03:02And then we go, okay, maybe the way to do it is this.
03:07The same thing, as we were hearkening,
03:10the same thing we did is probably what people are doing,
03:14which is you hearken back to when it really felt real
03:19and when it mattered.
03:20So my question is this.
03:23Something easy on a Friday.
03:26Your favorite and least favorite moment from the rivalry
03:32with a catch, you cannot select trouble with the snap.
03:39Otherwise, that would be every Spartan's favorite
03:43and every Wolverine's least favorite.
03:45We're taking it off the table.
03:48No trouble with the snap.
03:50What about Spartan, Bob?
03:51You can do whatever the F you want.
03:55Just no, because it would just be every caller.
03:59Well, I got a feeling a lot of Michigan fans,
04:01I hated Spartan, Bob.
04:03They cheated and they were holding on to play.
04:05And yeah.
04:06Okay.
04:07What are you, Jim Branstad?
04:08Or look at Larry Steele.
04:10But no, what is your favorite and least favorite moment?
04:14If I take that off the table.
04:17And again, it's totally this subjective thing.
04:20It doesn't have to be the most important moment
04:23for it to be your favorite moment.
04:25It could be something like I shared with you
04:28is like one year my dad was out here
04:30and it was the Damata Piku fumble return
04:33to tie the game at 31 and we lost in overtime.
04:36That moment was crazy.
04:38He was arguably the slowest human in the stadium.
04:41It was like they were wheeling him up the sideline
04:44and he somehow made it into the end zone to tie it.
04:48Michigan was about to put the game away.
04:49Right.
04:50Like you're not going to pitch that ball?
04:51Nope.
04:51Nope.
04:51I'm scoring somehow.
04:54But no, I just, I'm interested to hear
04:58because there is nothing to talk about with this.
05:01Like I heard John this morning.
05:02God love him.
05:03He was trying.
05:04Did the best he could.
05:05He was like, it still means something.
05:08John, God bless.
05:09You're doing the Lord's work.
05:10It does not.
05:12Wolverines don't care.
05:13Spartans don't care.
05:14And you can call up and fake it
05:16like you're all jazzed up about, you're not.
05:18You know what the funny one, Mike?
05:19And it was during a time where if you look back,
05:22that game, it felt a lot like this game
05:26where neither team was going anywhere.
05:28What game is this, bud?
05:29This was the Larry Caper game.
05:31That was scored in overtime.
05:33Was that 08 or 09?
05:35That's the tater tot bowl.
05:36I want to say it was 08.
05:3909, 08 was at the big house.
05:41That was the Blair White fever dream.
05:43So it'd be 09.
05:4409.
05:45Neither team was doing anything.
05:47I think state had a losing record.
05:49And I want to say Michigan had a losing record
05:51where they were like 500 at the time.
05:53But neither team, and this was one of those,
05:56oh, this thing is down.
05:57And it went to overtime.
05:58Michigan scores.
05:59That was early in the year, wasn't it?
06:01It was.
06:01Wasn't that like a September game?
06:03That was like early October.
06:05I'm going to look while you continue.
06:06Go ahead.
06:07And I remember because when Michigan scored,
06:10I remember saying they should just go for two
06:14and end this thing.
06:15Because the state defense had been on the field
06:17for like seven minutes.
06:18October 3, 2009.
06:21Early season game.
06:22I get to be like you.
06:23I got one right.
06:24All right.
06:25I feel good.
06:26Is this how you feel all the time?
06:28Back in the game.
06:29This is being superior to everybody with history.
06:33But I remember that.
06:34And it was like, yeah, that game, that was something.
06:39And yeah, maybe I guess just the ending of.
06:43So Michigan was 4-0.
06:46MSU was 1-3.
06:49Am I looking at that correctly?
06:51Yes.
06:51So there you go.
06:52Yeah.
06:53State really had no change.
06:54They were done.
06:56But Michigan's wins were like, eh, they won.
06:59But they weren't like wins.
07:01But yeah, that Larry Caper scoring in overtime
07:05as he breaks the tackle and runs in and scores.
07:07And that was Tater Tot.
07:09He threw a pick, a tip drill.
07:11Yes.
07:12Was it Danny Fortner?
07:13Remember the white kid who played safety, number 33.
07:16But no.
07:17Okay.
07:17So now why does that stick out for you?
07:20I'm interested.
07:20Of all the moments, what was that?
07:23Of all the games.
07:24You know what?
07:25Because I was, I would.
07:26Well, I don't know.
07:28Should I get the siren?
07:29No, no.
07:30No siren.
07:30But I was down on the field.
07:32I was working for, I was a cameraman, guys.
07:36I had to be down.
07:37Oh, double siren.
07:38Double siren.
07:39I had to be.
07:40No.
07:40And I was, I was there with Fox 2 Anchor.
07:45The triple siren.
07:46Okay.
07:47Do you want the story or no?
07:49Okay.
07:51So, Paul, how are you doing?
07:53It fits the OJ chase up in here.
07:56Quadruple siren.
07:57All right.
07:58Go ahead.
07:59Standing on the sideline.
08:01I was standing next to Ryan Armani.
08:03And we did not.
08:04He was a Michigan guy.
08:06I was a state guy.
08:08And at the end, we realized, yeah, we can't stand next to each other.
08:12So, you go that way.
08:13I'll go this way.
08:14I'll meet you at the end of the day.
08:15On field contentious.
08:17Yes.
08:17It was like, yeah, this isn't going to work.
08:19So, because every time I'm like, yes, he's like getting angry.
08:22We're like, this may not work right now.
08:25Let's meet at the end of the game.
08:26Go to your respective corners.
08:28So, that, I remember that.
08:31And also, I think the Chuck Brantley interception.
08:3421.
08:35Yeah.
08:35All right.
08:36Now, flip the script.
08:38Least favorite moment.
08:40Least favorite moment would still have to be the Braylon Edwards game.
08:45But what, see, it was moment.
08:48That's a series of moments.
08:50Because John L. decided to go single high and put a 5-9 corner on a 6-4 Heisman
08:54trophy contender.
08:55I digress.
08:56Yeah.
08:56It's a singular moment.
08:59Okay.
08:59A singular, because I just, they all homogenized into one.
09:03Okay, that's fair.
09:03It just became the nightmare.
09:05And it's just like, you know what it was?
09:07The moment when they decided to not, it was first and goal from the one.
09:13And they decided not to throw to Trannan on the outside.
09:17And they just tried to run it up the middle with the smallest back that he had.
09:22Was that Jason Teague?
09:23I want to say it was Teague.
09:25Or was it DeAndre Cobb?
09:27Well, that was the Cobb game where they ran that delay draw like six times.
09:31Right.
09:31And took it to the house.
09:33So, I think it was Cobb.
09:34Okay.
09:34And it was just like, why not go with the big boy back?
09:37But no, they ran it up the middle.
09:39And they had to kick a field goal.
09:40And it was first and goal from the one in overtime.
09:43Yeah.
09:43You lost the game.
09:44Yeah.
09:44David, we come to you.
09:45Dressed as a stick of margarine.
09:48Your favorite moment.
09:50Start with the good.
09:52Yeah.
09:52The favorite moment was, all of these are personal to me.
09:56The favorite moment was the Woodson interception because I was such a young lad.
10:00I was 11 years old.
10:01And it felt like I was learning how to walk.
10:04You know, when you watch football, you're like, oh my gosh, this is football.
10:07That was football that whole year for me.
10:09Wait, it's on a 97 at Spartan Stadium.
10:1197 Spartan Stadium.
10:12That Woodson interception, outstanding.
10:16I'm yelling as my parents are meeting with the window guys.
10:19It was hilarious.
10:20Okay.
10:21Least favorite.
10:22Least favorite.
10:24And we've banned trouble with the snap because that would just be number one with a bullet.
10:28Of course.
10:29We're taking it off the board.
10:30This one is personal to me because it was the first time that I actually realized that I am raising
10:37a Spartan.
10:38And it was the Kenneth Walker game.
10:40That final touchdown that put them on top and him screaming and going crazy in my house.
10:49I really thought I was, I'm like, what am I doing wrong?
10:51Hold on a second.
10:52Just to be clear.
10:53Yes.
10:53Your favorite moment.
10:55You were spiting your own child.
10:58No, that's my worst moment.
10:59That's his worst moment.
11:00So your worst is because your child was happy.
11:04It's because I realized that he was a Spartan.
11:06He thought that he failed.
11:07I did.
11:08I did.
11:08I'm like, oh my, what have I done?
11:09I was a shot.
11:10I wanted David's kids calling me last night.
11:12I thought David was calling me about something.
11:14Charlotte.
11:15I go, hey, what's up, buddy?
11:16It's a kid on the other.
11:17I go, and the kid's like, who's this?
11:20I go, well, hi there.
11:21I go, where's your dad?
11:22And all of a sudden, I hung up on my David's kid.
11:26It was like a baby.
11:29I don't want to say his name on me.
11:30I don't know if that's kosher, but like, David, how old is that kid?
11:33Like four?
11:34Oh, this was the youngest.
11:36This is the youngest.
11:37Oh, okay.
11:37I'm like.
11:38Because my phone rang and I'm going, oh, David, what's going on?
11:41I'm like, who did this?
11:42Who is this?
11:43I'm like.
11:43He's a Michigan fan.
11:44He realized, oh, that's a Spartan on the outside.
11:46I got to hang up.
11:47You know what?
11:47Actually, Mike, if I could, there is a moment.
11:51And it's so bad, I blocked it out.
11:53That's okay.
11:53This is good.
11:54This is cathartic.
11:56This is your worst moment.
11:59Little brother game.
12:00Okay.
12:02Their fumble happens.
12:05There's eight Spartans around the ball.
12:07And somehow, I think Mike Hart fumbled it.
12:10And it went right back to him.
12:10It went right back to him.
12:12It was like rugby.
12:12Like a basketball.
12:14Like, there's eight Spartans all around.
12:17And I'm thinking, this is ball game.
12:19This is it.
12:20Nope.
12:21How did he get the ball back?
12:23That is physically impossible.
12:26Bill Nye, the science guy, couldn't diagram that to happen.
12:30Could not.
12:30You know that happened again to them?
12:32Do you remember their big comeback when they invented the night game in Ann Arbor against Notre Dame?
12:37Yes.
12:38Denard had the same thing happen.
12:39Yes.
12:40He fumbled, and it was like a rugby bounce from Jesus himself.
12:43Bing!
12:43Nope.
12:44Sorry.
12:44There you go.
12:45Keep going.
12:46Like, what just happened here?
12:48How did he get the ball back?
12:50Things.
12:51So, we're starting with something that can try to get everyone at least thinking rivalry.
12:57We will mix in rivalry with Lions because we're asking what I think is a very difficult question.
13:03We'll have TJ join us.
13:04I'm interested in TJ's moments.
13:06TJ's a noted Michigan fan.
13:08I'm sure he has things he cares about.
13:10But no trouble with the snap.
13:12It's too easy.
13:13We're just taking it away.
13:15248-539-9797.
13:17We'll get to your phone calls next.
13:19It's 97.1.
