00:00And this is true long before they jobbed Notre Dame.
00:03I find this show, the college football committee's weekly ranking show,
00:12to be a disgrace and a black eye on this sport.
00:18It should not exist.
00:21The college basketball world understands that.
00:24They don't give you weekly updates as to who is going to be in the big dance.
00:30They'll tell you like once in February who the top 16 teams are
00:36because they know that all those teams are going to be there and it's fine.
00:41What they do not do is create a more important version of the AP poll,
00:49which everyone thinks is ridiculous
00:52because the only justification for what we were given this past week
00:58was a panel of guys employed by the people putting the show on going,
01:06well, like it doesn't really matter.
01:07Don't worry about it.
01:08Like this will all work itself out.
01:10That was the best they could come up with.
01:12For a second, I thought Reese Davis was going to walk off the set
01:16and he's supposed to be the level-headed one there, Dave.
01:19Yeah, and I've said I haven't been apologetic on the show
01:22about what the AP poll means when it comes out in August.
01:25It's utterly irrelevant.
01:27I've tried to tell the whole world don't pay attention to the polls
01:30other than what we talk about and put a fictitious number next to somebody
01:34and week by week people are just moving teams up and down
01:36and not even thinking about it.
01:37But the only thing more pointless than the AP poll
01:42is the college football rankings poll in November.
01:45It's literally pointless times 10, and I won't go far into the fact
01:50that it's on the air and what station's on and all that.
01:53Obviously, I worked with them for 18 years, so I won't go that far.
01:56But they did on air.
01:58Like you said, Reese almost wanted to walk off, and, oh, it doesn't matter.
02:02And he's right.
02:02It does not matter.
02:04And, Kev, I was in the car last night with my dad on my way to Gainesville,
02:07and he's a Miami guy, and he's like,
02:09why did they drop Notre Dame from 4 to 11?
02:12And I'm like, no, they didn't drop Notre Dame from 4 to 11.
02:15They went from one pointless poll to another pointless poll,
02:19and they're still number four in the AP poll,
02:22but number 11 over here in a ranking that utterly doesn't matter.
02:26And in terms of that ranking, I thought it was even my expectations, Kevin,
02:32were beyond low, and they still exceeded the bar in terms of a disaster of a poll
02:37because I look at number 11, Notre Dame, and on a neutral field,
02:41I would have taken them over every single team above them except for Georgia and Miami,
02:45and even then I might think about it.
02:47LSU not ranked.
02:48I mean, do they watch football?
02:50I know they have two losses.
02:52You know, we can go back and forth, Tennessee and Alabama being eight spots apart,
02:56Ohio State and Indiana.
02:58What's Indiana done, Kevin, to be number four in the country
03:01other than go to overtime against crappy Big Ten schools?
03:03What have they done?
03:04So I don't get it.
03:06I didn't want to spend too much time breaking down the reasons for each committee's ranking
03:11because then it just drives you mad because you have no idea.
03:15It's a pick and choose.
03:16Head-to-head counts sometimes.
03:17Head-to-head doesn't count other times.
03:19On and on and on.
03:20There's no reason for it whatsoever.
03:22There is hypocrisy littered throughout the rankings.
03:26The notion that I've for a while pushed back on is that it doesn't matter
03:34it'll all work out.
03:36Except whenever you ask anyone to do a set of weekly rankings, no matter what,
03:45what they end up doing is going back to next week's rankings and adjusting off that.
03:50That's what they do.
03:51So what's going to happen?
03:53What is going to happen is if Notre Dame beats Miami today, they will jump Miami.
04:00I promise you, they will jump Miami.
04:03And in the AP poll, that's obviously super normal.
04:06It's a one verse four.
04:08One verse 11 jumping one means you've created a bit of a mess, by the way.
04:15But here's my question.
04:17Should Notre, if Ole Miss beat Georgia, should Notre Dame jump Ole Miss?
04:24No.
04:25Okay.
04:26So now they go up.
04:27If UCLA stay unbeaten, should Notre Dame jump them for beating Miami?
04:33Probably not.
04:33So if Miami lose today, they're going to go back to like ninth because they gave us a nonsensical
04:44shouldn't exist set of rankings that they are now going to work off of.
04:50So it's just, to me, it is, I truly believe this, Dave.
04:54Like, it is bad for the sport that this exists.
04:57And yet, here we are.
05:02And it's contractual.
05:03We'll just leave it at that.
05:05It's contractual, which is why they do it.
05:07And a lot of things would change for them to have to change that.
05:10And who knows, next year when they go to 24, maybe it changes and it's more nonsensical.
05:14But you're right.
05:14They back themselves into a corner every single time they do it.
05:18They did it to the Irish last year when all of a sudden they flipped Miami and Notre Dame
05:23after neither one of them played.
05:25They back themselves into too many corners.
05:27Someone says, why is UCLA so low and undefeated?
05:30Well, they haven't beaten them.
05:32Well, neither has the number one team in the country either.
05:34So both teams haven't beaten anybody, but one is number one and one is number eight.
05:39And it was just like, oh, Miami was going to be number one.
05:42We knew that.
05:42Why?
05:43Well, they beat them.
05:44Like, Georgia has better wins on their resume.
05:47Who has Indiana beaten that they're number four in the country?
05:49Who has taken away from?
