Election-related violence occurred in at least four Mexican states ahead of Sunday's vote. The government faces the worst pre-election climate ever. At least 40 candidates have been physically attacked and eight of them have been killed. The latest victim was Miguel Angel Luna, congressional candidate of the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) in the State of Mexico. Violence was particularly intense in the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, where protesters supporting the call for a boycott attacked and burned election board offices. The federal government said it would not open polling stations in areas where security cannot be ensured. Despite corruption scandals plaguing President Enrique Peña Nieto, his Institutional Revolutionary Party appears headed for a victory in Sunday's election, with poll showing the ruling party with 32% support among voters. teleSUR
