AccuWeather meteorologists are closely monitoring a storm that has the potential to bring a stripe of accumulating snow from parts of the Midwest to the Northeast early next week.
Transcript
00:00 Storm a bigger one as we head to your
00:02 Monday and Tuesday and to break it all
00:04 down joining me right now is actually
00:06 chief meteorologist John Porter with
00:07 more on our next week outlook John.
00:09 Good morning, thanks for joining us.
00:10 Good morning.
00:11 Some very active weather on
00:12 the way here in the east.
00:14 You are not kidding my friend.
00:15 Look, we've been really digging
00:16 into this storm because I feel
00:18 like it's been a little bit cushy
00:19 for us in the Northeast lately.
00:21 We haven't dealt with much snow.
00:23 It hasn't been all that cold.
00:24 It's like where's the Arctic air,
00:26 but we have some changes on the way.
00:28 Yeah, that's going to be
00:29 changing in a big way.
00:30 You're right, we've been on
00:31 sort of a mild interlude here,
00:33 but reality is on the way here again.
00:35 Very soon.
00:36 Yeah, you are not kidding.
00:37 Three things to know as we
00:39 head through this next storm.
00:40 Here's your dose of reality, right?
00:42 That's right,
00:43 and we're going to be looking
00:44 at this Monday into Tuesday.
00:46 It looks like it's going to be mainly
00:48 a rain event right along the immediate
00:51 coast along the I-95 corridor,
00:52 safe from New York City southbound,
00:54 but North and West of that area in the
00:57 interior that's where we're going to
00:59 be talking about the risk for some
01:01 heavy snow and we'll talk about that
01:03 in just a minute and also across
01:05 parts of the Ohio Valley as well.
01:07 Well, here it is.
01:08 Here's the outlook of what we're
01:09 expecting and you know, look,
01:11 the way that we come up with these forecasts.
01:13 We have such a great team of
01:15 meteorologists behind this John,
01:16 and as we kind of look through the
01:18 last couple of days as we see models
01:20 adjusts we have made some changes
01:22 and this is kind of a result right here.
01:24 That's right,
01:25 our team of over 100 expert
01:26 meteorologists working together
01:27 to produce the most accurate,
01:28 proven most accurate forecast for you
01:30 so you can make the best decisions.
01:32 We've been monitoring this
01:33 situation minute by minute.
01:34 The way this looks like it's going to
01:36 evolve is we're going to have one strong
01:39 storm system coming up from the South.
01:41 Right up into the Ohio Valley,
01:42 which will spread snow on the north
01:44 and western side of that from
01:46 portions of Oklahoma into the Ozarks
01:48 and northeast bound into parts of
01:50 the Ohio Valley where there could
01:51 be a rain snow mix and then another
01:53 storm system will intensify along
01:55 the East Coast, but Christina looks
01:57 like it's going to track very close
01:58 to the East Coast, which means again,
02:00 more rain situation right along the I-95
02:02 corridor, but the snow in the interior.
02:04 Something that's so important to note
02:06 because look that rain snow line is such.
02:08 I mean, it's a dividing force
02:10 for people in the Northeast.
02:11 You've got those coastal cities like,
02:13 let's say Baltimore,
02:14 who are maybe hoping for a
02:15 little more of the rain.
02:17 Well, at this point,
02:18 that's kind of what it looks like.
02:20 But John,
02:20 I want to dig into something that
02:22 you're only going to find here on
02:24 the weather. This is so cool.
02:25 Not only have we broken down the storm,
02:28 but we've broken down your
02:29 probability of that heavy snow for
02:30 the folks who maybe want a little
02:32 extra taste of winter. That's correct.
02:34 We talked about this different
02:35 scenarios the other day.
02:36 Yesterday we launched exclusively
02:38 here at Accuweather your percent
02:39 chance of three or more inches of
02:41 snow and you could see that that
02:43 ramps up across parts of Oklahoma
02:44 into the Ozarks as we talked about.
02:46 And then the northern Ohio Valley.
02:48 But then look in the interior
02:50 here in the Northeast.
02:51 We're talking about the significant
02:52 risk at 60 to 80% chance in the
02:55 higher elevations of Northeastern
02:56 Pennsylvania to northern New England.
02:58 But look right along the I-95
02:59 corridor. Sharp variation.
03:00 So just inland there can be accumulating
03:02 snow, but right at the coast this
03:04 looks like mainly a rain event
03:06 which may end in some snow.
03:08 One last thing to consider here.
03:10 Whether those chances increase or decrease.
03:12 Obviously when we have a forecast as
03:14 far out as we do here at Accuweather,
03:16 it's sort of the beauty of working
03:18 with this incredible team.
03:20 We have such a.
03:21 Solid long range team here.
03:22 You're not going to find that anywhere else.
03:25 You know you do have to adjust at times,
03:27 and these are the adjustments that
03:29 we're thinking about at this point.
03:31 Does your chance increase or
03:32 decrease as we go ahead?
03:34 That's right,
03:34 this is another one of those exclusive
03:36 features you'll see only at Accuweather.
03:38 This gets into the minds of our expert
03:40 meteorologist and shows you what
03:41 we're thinking about here.
03:42 So look at the key areas in green.
03:44 That's where the risk for three or
03:46 more inches of snow is lowering in the
03:49 yellow there's been not much change
03:50 to that risk and then in the red.
03:52 That's where the risk for three
03:54 or more inches of snow is increasing,
03:56 so you could see a bit of an increase
03:58 across parts of down East Maine
03:59 into interior Southern New England,
04:01 back into northeastern Pennsylvania,
04:02 and a bit of a decreasing risk a
04:04 little bit further to the South.
04:06 And also to the north as we just
04:08 attract just a little bit to the South,
04:10 so we'll be fine tuning this
04:12 forecast with our team all through
04:13 the day with those details here on
04:15 the Accuweather network and the
04:16 Accuweather app. Absolutely love it.
04:18 John, I am personally very excited
04:19 at the idea of increasing snowfall
04:20 percentages here around Accuweather HQ.
04:22 I love a good taste of winter.
04:24 Accuweather chief meteorologist
04:24 John Porter.
04:25 Thanks so much for joining us.
04:27 We love having you here on the show.
04:29 Good to be with you this morning.
