00:00Yeah, I really like the guys, the effort and the energy they're putting forth.
00:03Our execution is still not close to where it needs to be, but I don't expect it to be.
00:08We have five installs in now, so that's a lot of football that's on their plate.
00:12It's a lot to know, a lot to remember.
00:14The thing that I'm pleased with is they continually chopped all through the practice,
00:18and it's hot, and it's rough what we're doing, and we're going at a fast pace.
00:23So I'm very, very pleased.
00:24When you do that over time, you get better.
00:27Greg, arguably your top corner last year, Max Melton.
00:29He's back again.
00:30You've coached a ton of good corners in the past.
00:32How would you kind of compare him to those guys?
00:35Max is as talented as any of them.
00:39What he's working on right now is consistency.
00:41Every play, consistently getting his alignment, understanding what the receiver's giving,
00:47what kind of tips the receiver's giving to him, and then finishing the play with great eye discipline.
00:52He's getting better and better.
00:54He's got a chance to be a real good one.
00:56Is there any update on the Drew Singleton situation?
00:58Yeah, very disappointed.
01:03The NCAA ruled against us, so there is another step, a last step that we're certainly going to try.
01:15I'm really disappointed.
01:16I stated my feelings beforehand.
01:22You want guys to play in bowl games, and eight days, I don't know, maybe you guys do.
01:29Not many teams have accepted a bowl game with eight days' notice, had two practices, and went and played the bowl game.
01:38Not that I know of.
01:39So when a draft-eligible player comes back to play, and to me that's pretty special, and unfortunately got injured, I just struggle.
01:49I think that's extenuating circumstances.
01:52I understand the whole amateurism rule, but eight days' notice, that's extenuating circumstances.
01:57I'm not sure how you could define that other than.
02:00I would like one of them to come get a team ready to go get a plane during the second biggest outbreak of COVID and say that's not extenuating circumstances.
02:08I don't understand that.
02:10We're not going to talk about that anymore.
02:13Just to be clear, they denied the appeal.
02:15Is there still a chance that you said there's something else you asked you to do?
02:18There's still a chance that?
02:19I just said, I'm not going to talk about it anymore.
02:20I told you everything there is to know.
02:21We're done.
02:23Aaron Krukshank, what have you seen out of him so far in camp?
02:26And just to have him here, you know, less than a year after that injury, what kind of a boost does he give to the wide receivers?
02:31Yeah, it's really big.
02:32I mean, Aaron worked himself into being a really good receiver, not only a return man,
02:37and, you know, he had the surgery, so we were very concerned.
02:42And, you know, we're not out of the woods yet, but he's making progress and he's taking care of himself
02:47and he's healing well and he's playing, you know, he's playing.
02:51He's not full load yet, but he's close.
02:53And we just got to keep bringing him along at a steady pace.
02:55But he needs to be a good player for us for sure.
03:00Greg, going back to the defensive backs, it seems like you have a pretty good group of safeties this year.
03:04We saw Igbenosin flash at the bowl game.
03:06Is there a chance that we'll see him and Igbenosin on the field at the same time this year?
03:09There is.
03:10Yeah, I mean, right now we're trying to work through the different combinations,
03:14but that's one that we've worked on for sure.
03:17Greg, Jameer Wright at linebacker?
03:20Yeah, we made that switch just the other day.
03:25You know, he played linebacker in high school.
03:27He actually played safety here for two weeks when he first came,
03:30but we felt like we needed to bolster that group.
03:34And he's somebody that's capable of playing in games if he learns the position.
03:40Where do you feel like Tyreen Powell's at and kind of the strides that he's taken since last season?
03:44I think Tyreen continues to get better every practice.
03:47He really works hard at it.
03:50He's physically gifted and he really wants to be great.
03:53So that combination usually works as long as you work hard, and he's doing that.
03:57So it's just a matter of time.
03:59But, you know, he doesn't have a ton of experience, just like our whole linebacker crew.
04:03So that'll be the key, right, getting experience and hopefully minimizing the mistakes we make.
04:09I know you said previously that the Gator Bowl was an opportunity to get some young players, some reps.
04:14Curious what you saw there from some of those young guys that are parlaying that to right now.
04:19Well, yeah, you know, with the number of guys that either couldn't play because of COVID
04:24or chose not to play because of the NFL draft, we did.
04:29We were forced to play more young players that hadn't really seen a lot of action.
04:32I thought it was great, right?
04:34They got their first or, you know, their first real chunk of plays in a big-time environment, right,
04:41in a bowl game against a really good Wake Forest team.
04:45There's no substitute for that experience.
04:47So that was special.
04:48Greg, do you have any, today was the first day with pads.
04:51What changes when those come on and what did you think of them in this, you know, playing full go
04:56and specifically the quarterbacks, what did you see out of them in the full pads?
04:58Well, it's actually the third day we had pads.
05:02You know, we go spider, spider.
05:03The NCAA rules are you have to go with spider pads the first two days.
05:07Then you have three days what we call shells, which is shoulder pads and helmets.
05:11And now tomorrow we're able to go full pads.
05:13On practice six, you can go full.
05:15So that'll be the first.
05:16There's not a whole lot of difference between full pads and shells because we don't go to the ground.
05:22You know, the only time we really go to the ground is in scrimmages.
05:25So if you're not going to the ground, it's still the same contact.
05:29You're just not tackling to the ground.
05:31Obviously, the first scrimmage is coming up this weekend.
05:33Yeah.
05:33What are you looking for out of there and, like, what would you ideally like to get out of there?
05:38Yeah.
05:39You know, scrimmages, you don't get preseason games in college football.
05:44So scrimmages are your preseason games.
05:46You don't get to scrimmage another team, you know, like you do in high school.
05:49So you really don't get that opportunity.
05:50What you see is what you get on opening day.
05:52So it's real important that it starts with the coaches, that we run a really efficient and effective operation as coaches on the sideline in the press box.
06:02And then it's who can really handle the ebbs and flows of a game situation, being able to think about the situation and play accordingly.
06:13Like, some guys are just better at that than others.
06:15Some of it's experience, some of it is just, you know, their love of the game and how much they study it, you know.
06:24So that all comes out in that environment more than out here in this environment.
06:29So I look for that because what we ultimately have to do is we have to decide on who the starting 11 are and then who the subs are for those starting 11.
06:38And I tell our team that we weight that more heavily than we weight this.
06:44We weight it all.
06:45We look at it all.
06:46We evaluate it all.
06:46But we weight that more heavily because that's closer to what, you know, we ultimately get judged on.
06:51And that's game day.
