00:02Welcome in. Welcome in. The game is still going on. The Dolphins just scored a touchdown.
00:10They're coming back. They could be coming back, Sterling. It's not over, Carter. It's
00:15not over. You know, it's never over until the final buzzer, Sterling, but I feel pretty
00:19good about this one. So we're going to come on a little early. So Sterling, it's been
00:24a week. Niners are 2-0. 2-0. And you know, you can't pick your opponents.
00:30In this league, Sterling, you just roll with the punches. And the Niners take care of business
00:36against a very, very lowly opponent in the Miami Dolphins today. Sterling, how are you?
00:43I'm doing good, man. I had to work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., raced home to watch
00:47the game
00:48thinking it might be a little closer than we think. That wasn't the case whatsoever.
00:54San Francisco walked out there at Levi's Stadium and showed the world once again who they are
01:00for a second straight week. You beat the Rams in week number one. They are the supposed Super
01:06Bowl contender, Los Angeles Rams. And now you beat the Dolphins, 35 or soon to be 35 to 13,
01:13hopefully. And they're the assumed to be number one overall draft pick team in next year's draft.
01:18So quite the difference in opponent, but the same result throughout. Niners win. And that is exactly
01:25what you want to hear after the first two weeks of the NFL season. And as we do, Sterling, you
01:31know
01:31where I usually like to start, which is with the quarterback. Sterling, what'd you see out there?
01:37I mean, Brock Purdy just took advantage of one of the worst secondaries in football.
01:42We always wondered exactly how this game would go with the Dolphins come out. You know,
01:46they didn't play in Australia a week ago. Is San Francisco's offense going to be a little
01:50sluggish? And no, it was the Brock Purdy show from beginning to end. He had 18 straight completions
01:57in this game. Nicky had, what, 20 for 22 when it was all said and done. Brock Purdy said,
02:04that is one of the worst defenses in football. And I'm going to, like a lion, go on the prowl
02:09and get
02:09my prey. And it was the Brock Purdy show from first quarter to about, you know, third and a half
02:14quarter when they pulled him out because it was so ugly out there at Levi's.
02:17He was absolutely incredible, Sterling. I mean, it was clear that he was able to pick apart
02:22where the weak spots in that defense were at all times. I mean, he's, you know, we kind of know
02:28Brock as this guy who throws these deep balls over the middle quite frequently, these, these long
02:33cross routes. And, you know, they, they threw quite a few of those today. And Miami finally decides,
02:40let's take that away. And he hits Mike Evans there outside the numbers right near the pylon.
02:46And it just felt like no matter what they took away, Brock Purdy had an answer for, for the
02:51Dolphins today. It's just the guy looked elite today.
02:56Well, and that's what you want from your quarterback, right? You pay him $53 million a year. The
03:00expectation is, yeah, you're going to give us a chance to get some of the best defenses in football.
03:05But when you play one of the worst defenses in football, you're going to completely annihilate
03:10them for four quarters. And it didn't take that long for Brock Purdy to do so. But this
03:15is as close to perfect as you can really want from a player like Purdy. The deep ball was
03:21working again, their knee stuff worked. It was almost like the Dolphins didn't even have
03:25a defense out there. And that's disrespectful to say, but when you score on your first five
03:31drives and you're up, you know, 35, whatever it is at the time, like the Niners just waltzed
03:36in their home opener, Debo's return, Kittle's back in front of the home crowd, Dre Greenlaw's
03:42return, and they felt it. And there was no layover from Australia. This was a full on trouncing.
03:48And really, like, that should be the expectation. When San Francisco plays teams like the Dolphins,
03:54maybe next week against the Cardinals or other teams that you assume are gimme games, this is
03:59what you want. You go out there, crush them for three quarters, get your backups in and
04:03hopefully salvage what is the remaining of this injury-riddled roster already through
04:06two weeks.
04:07I think you nailed it, Sterling, which is when you pay a quarterback this kind of money,
04:12this is what you want to see against bad teams. I think you did it quite a bit last
04:15year, too, with the Titans game comes to mind and a couple others. But Atlanta, it just feels
04:21like when you go out against these horrible teams, you need to make a statement. And the 49ers
04:27made a clear statement today. The spread was only 13 and a half. They completely destroyed
04:31the spread. I mean, Vegas was completely off on that one. Honestly, Sterling, I was a little
04:36bummed to see them score here at the end. I mean, if they wouldn't have scored, the 49ers
04:44would have only allowed one touchdown in two weeks. I mean, that's really impressive and
04:48a great start for Raheem Morris, honestly.
04:51They would have been the only team through two weeks to allow single-digit scores on defense.
04:56offense. Wouldn't that have been something? Now, you're playing the Dolphins, so it doesn't
05:00say much about you. But I want to ask you this because I walked into this game thinking
05:05the Niners should win rather handily. But the Dolphins, I think, have a little more fight
05:13in them. They're young, which could be a bad thing. In this case, it was. But other times,
05:17that can actually kind of upset you or that can kind of line things up for the team being
05:22upset. And I was kind of worried that the Dolphins may come out swinging and they'd score
05:27early and they put the Niners on their heels. And although I thought San Francisco could
05:31climb themselves back into a game and win it, I was a little tepid of like, oh, it's going
05:35to be overcome quarter two, quarter three. And that wasn't the case. But what were your
05:41thoughts entering this game today against Miami?
05:43Uh, I thought that they would handle business. I mean, handle it. It just felt to me like 13
05:51and a half points is a big spread. So like, I wasn't going to like touch that by any means.
05:55But
05:56I did think that, look, to me, Sterling, I'll be honest, this Miami Dolphins team just doesn't
06:00have anybody. Like, they just don't. They don't have the manpower.
06:03Don't tell Ken that. Don't tell Ken that.
06:05Don't worry. When I see Ken tomorrow, I'm going to smear it right in his face.
06:08Uh, yeah, I just, I wasn't a believer in this team. I genuinely feel bad for Devon HN. I mean,
06:15he's a real player. And I just think when you don't have anyone next to you, even Malik Willis,
06:22I mean, you know, running quarterbacks have given them problems in the past. Let's, let's be honest.
06:27And that made me a little nervous today that they could come out and give the Niners a little
06:31more trouble maybe than we had originally thought. Um, but it was just a big nothing burger. I mean,
06:36Nick Bosa was kind of having his way back there. It felt like even if he wasn't getting the sacks,
06:40I mean, he was flustering and there's no doubt. Um, and I think this kind of went the way I
06:46thought. I, I, I didn't know that they would score on every drive, but, uh, I mean, you know,
06:53you got to feel pretty good about that. Right. Sterling.
06:55Oh, it's like the varsity team scrimmages, the JV team. And you're like, Oh, maybe I'll give the JV
07:01team some points and, you know, give them a chance to surprise me. And then you see the game actually
07:06take place. And you're like, we have a lot of work to do. We are nowhere near contending. And
07:11the dolphins know that they've been pretty open about like, this is an evaluation year for us.
07:16We're not planning to be good. We want to see who sticks and who doesn't. Uh, but I don't know
07:21how,
07:21if you're the dolphins, you leave this game being like, we like what we're building towards. And
07:27obviously it's two weeks into a brand new regime. So you won't go that far with the just yet, but,
07:31um, I will just say this should prove to everybody out there because a lot of people believe the
07:37Niners may miss the playoffs and that could still happen. There's a long way to go, right? A lot of
07:42things can happen. They've lost three guys to injuries, Robinson, Sribling, and Tung just the last
07:48two games. So that may hopefully not continue, but we'll see as the year goes on. But, um, people have
07:55been saying, you know, San Francisco is overrated and San Francisco is this and that not buying into
08:00what Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy are selling. What I hope these two games, although very different
08:05opponents and who they played is a reminder of how good San Francisco can be going toe to toe with
08:12the assumed super bowl, uh, contender Rams. And then walking at home to the dolphins and being like,
08:19dude, what is this? What are you offering up to us in week number two? But a big win for
08:27San
08:27Francisco two and Oh, uh, and they are atop the NFC West alongside those Seattle Seahawks entering
08:33week number three. Now, you know, certainly I think a lot of that doubt though, for people of why they
08:38would, you know, potentially miss the playoffs is based on the division they're in. It's not
08:44necessarily based on to me what the 49ers are themselves. I think when you look at this division,
08:50it might be the hardest division in the history of football. And if the Niners had been in the NFC
08:56South, no one would be questioning whether they'll make it in, you know? Uh, and they just happen to
09:02be so unlucky to be in this insane, you know, this juggernaut of a division. Um, but they're making
09:07their way early here. I, I think Sterling for me, one of the really promising things is going back to
09:13Brock Purdy a little bit. What I love to see about him and what he, I just love about him
09:18is, you know, there's a lot of quarterbacks who, Oh, I've got my guy. I've got my guy over here.
09:23You know, I'm going to hit my guy. I think we saw with Colin Kaepernick quite a bit, honestly,
09:26is, you know, he even answered in that, um, when he tried to hit Crabtree in the Superbowl,
09:32he even answered, well, of course I'm going to go to my guy. I think when it, when they asked
09:35him
09:36about it, right. Brock Purdy does not do that. Brock Purdy tries to find who's open and does his reads
09:41and works through it. And it is truly offense by committee of what's Brock Purdy. I mean,
09:47how many players got involved today? I mean, Hodges got a, got a catch today for God's sake.
09:52You know what I mean? So it's just, that is where for me, that's what I want to see from
09:58a quarterback
10:00is look, you're just finding who's open. It doesn't matter what, who's on, you know,
10:03the name on the back of the Jersey for me. Well, and that's what the good ones do, right? Like
10:09people often compare Purdy to Drew Brees cause of the size stuff or Brady cause of the draft
10:14selection stuff. And Brady was a little more fickle as to who he trusted when the game got
10:18going. But those guys, if they believe somebody can help that team, when the saints, the Patriots,
10:25the Buccaneers, if they believe you can help them win a Superbowl, you were getting the football.
10:30And I think Brock Purdy, not to compare him to those great quarterbacks, hall of famers,
10:34and maybe one of the goats in Tom Brady, maybe the goat in Tom Brady. Like Purdy has that same
10:42mindset of, if you can help me win, I do not care what your name is, what you look like,
10:47how big you are, how strong you are. If you can catch me a ball on third and six for
10:52seven yards,
10:53I'm giving you a chance. Whether it's Kittle, Evans, Stripling when he was healthy, Robinson,
10:59Debo, Tungis, Farrell, the list goes on and on and on. Where I think if Brock Purdy believes you
11:04and believes in you, like he's going to put you in a place to help this roster win games. And
11:10you saw today, you mentioned already, like you're saying practice squad elevations catch passes.
11:15Yeah, they're not down by five or on a game winning drive, but if you can help this team win,
11:20you're getting the football. And I think a lot of that goes into Purdy's mentality, but also
11:25kind of how Purdy had to grow himself, you know, being a third string quarterback,
11:29fourth string guy, could have been cut, practice squad dude, being brought up, like all that stuff.
11:33Like the, the, uh, the perseverance he has had, I think kind of has formed that mentality.
11:39And like, he's talked about playing desperate today. You want to play with the chip on your
11:43shoulder. Well, having that chip affords you a chance to throw to anybody on your roster.
11:48And that carries over into game day too.
11:50Absolutely. I, and I think right now, I mean, he's pacing Sterling that he could have, I mean,
11:56this could be as an MVP like season. It really could be. I don't think that that's too crazy
12:00to say through these first two games, the way he has played, if he can keep this up. I mean,
12:05he looks as good as any quarterback in the NFL right now. Let's be honest.
12:09With six touchdowns, one turnover.
12:12Sterling, I think he, he almost went perfect. He almost went perfect today. Like put that in
12:17perspective. I don't care who you're playing. That is hard to do in the NFL. I mean, period.
12:22These are still NFL players you're playing against and to throw what 20 of 22. I mean,
12:28that's nuts and score on every drive. I mean, yeah, you can, I will listen to you. Tell me that
12:36they,
12:37that's what he needs to do against the dolphins. Sure. I'll listen to that. But nonetheless,
12:41that is very hard to do in the NFL. And he did it with ease today, Sterling. And it wasn't
12:47just
12:47through the air. I mean, we saw the touchdown run. He made the great choice there to, you know,
12:52to scramble and get the touchdown himself. And it just feels like this guy between the ears is as
12:58sound as they come. Well, it comes into preparation. Kyle Shanahan, you know, having the game plan set
13:03and pretty seeing it the way Kyle does. I think it also helps. The offensive line has been fantastic.
13:09It has like Brock Purdy has not really been touched at all the first two games. And there
13:15is a big gap in between playing the Rams and dolphins. So you'll give maybe the Niners offensive
13:20line, not too much praise today, but they've done their job through the first two games. Purdy has had
13:25a ton of time to throw, to make plays, to scramble. There's even the play today where even one of
13:32his
13:32incompletions, he kind of jukes the defender who blitzed him. And it's like, you're right there.
13:36You have Purdy dead to rights. He makes a guy miss and finds an open lane. And, you know,
13:42it's hard to continue to be impressed by Brock Purdy week by week. We've seen it for the past
13:48three years now. Like we know who Brock Purdy is. He's a really good quarterback on days. He's top
13:53five on days. He's top 10 on days. He struggles, right? But more often than not, he's just a really
13:59good football player that gets the job done and is uber efficient. Like the efficiency level of Brock
14:05Purdy, the first two games of the NFL season should not be ignored. What? Three touchdowns,
14:11one interception. I think today he did the exact same play through a pick on against the Rams.
14:16And it was a completion today for about 22 yards. Like Brock is just, let's get the business. And
14:21now we're sitting here to know, like bring on the Cardinals, bring on the Broncos, bring on the
14:25Seahawks. I don't know if there is a team right now that should be as confident as the San Francisco
14:3249ers in their quarterback and in their roster. I agree with you, Sterling. And I think, you know,
14:37obviously the big criticism of him has been that he's sometimes careless with the ball. And I think
14:43that's a very fair criticism of him from what we've seen in the past couple of years, you know,
14:48but it also is what makes him him to some degree. And what makes him so good is he's willing
14:54to take
14:55chances. And more often than not, those chances do pay off, but we've seen in the past, you know,
15:01I think back to that Carolina game last year. I mean, he had three picks, uh, I mean, before you
15:06could blink basically, and somehow they still won that game so easily. I mean, it was just,
15:13it felt like it was over at halftime and he had three picks. Um, but I feel like this season,
15:18Sterling specifically, he has been more careful with the ball. Obviously I think back to the
15:24Kittle, uh, you know, McDuffie grabbing that one out of bounds last week. But I think on top of
15:29being more careful with the ball, it feels like he's eliminated some of these hospital balls that,
15:34you know, we've seen in the past from him with these passes over the middle. And I think that,
15:39I mean, he's hitting his guys right in stride, right in the chest. A lot of the times when I'm
15:45watching him pass Sterling, I'm looking at where it lands in the receiver's hands. And I just,
15:49there's few quarterbacks who are putting it more perfectly on a receiver than Brock
15:54Purdy right now. And I think the promising part is he was doing that in the past, right? But there
16:00were times where he'd get his receiver into trouble. I mean, let's be honest, they'd get
16:04popped. I mean, Jimmy Garoppolo was the King of this. Let's be honest, Sterling, but you don't
16:09miss the hospital balls. No, no, no, no, no. I'm so glad that that era is done. Uh, yes, but
16:15I think
16:16that it's been impressive to me. I think that he's, he's worked on that part of his game. It's been
16:22quite clear to me through these first two. And I, and I definitely am definitely with
16:25you. The blocking by the offensive line really needs to be commended. I mean, it has been
16:31fantastic.
16:33Well, I think with Brock too, you know, it's, we've watched him play for so long. We we've
16:39seen how great he can be in the amazing place he's made, you know, obviously being on the
16:44air with Grandy during the lions playoff game. And we're sitting there at halftime, like this
16:48it's, it's over man. Like, Oh, what a magical year it's over. Then they storm back and Purdy's
16:53out there hugging Shanahan on the sideline after the win. It's just like, we've seen the
16:57really high highs and sometimes some low lows and they've been able to avoid those low lows
17:01for the most part with Purdy, which is nice to see. But I think to, to see him go out
17:06there
17:06and just slice through, like they scored 27 points last week and 35 this week. Like if
17:12you're doing that against some of the best in football and some of the worst, and you find
17:16that middle ground of just being a consistently good offense that can beat anybody. Like it
17:22doesn't matter how many guys get hurt, which obviously you want to be as healthy as possible.
17:26And, but they've lost so many players already to injury, a handful of wide receivers. They
17:31got practice quad guys out there. Jacob Cowan's getting reps already. I don't love that as a
17:36wide receiver. It's like, I'm not sure about that stuff. Um, but they've been able to persevere.
17:40And I think you mentioned Purdy hitting guys in stride. We all know Purdy is the layered King,
17:46according to Raheem Morris, their defensive coordinator. There was a handful of throws today
17:50where the Miami Dolphins defense is in perfect position and he's just fitting the ball over the
17:58outstretch fingertips, right to Mike Evans on the sideline towards the one yard line. He's giving guys
18:03a chance. Uh, and he's throwing the ball towards the out of bounds marker instead of inland, uh, towards a
18:08defender. And it's like, that's something elite guys do. And Purdy's never going to be in that
18:12conversation because he's not Josh Allen. He's not Lamar Jackson. Those would be a bigger body
18:17guys that these kind of elite traits. But I mean, through two games, this fear, like you talk about
18:23top five quarterbacks, he's played like a top five quarterback the first two weeks. And there's so
18:28much to go and we'll see if that trend continues, but where Brock Purdy is trending, it isn't towards
18:32top 10 quarterback. It's towards MVP candidate. I mean, through the first two weeks, he is, has
18:38been a top five quarterback. I, if anyone would like to argue that with me, I'd be glad to argue
18:42it. Honestly, I, you're an idiot. If you're, you're really not watching if, if that's the case.
18:46Yeah. And a guy with, you know, people ask about a lot, Justin Herbert. I mean, they, they're
18:53Oh, and two, and they have lost. They have two awful losses now on their credentials. And yeah,
18:59to the, the, the Cardinals and the Raiders, Cardinals and Raiders. And this is a guy who
19:03people praise. And yeah, let's be honest. If you're watching these games, you're not
19:08picking Justin Herbert right now over Brock Purdy. You're just not. Otherwise you're not
19:12watching me. Dan Orlovsky might, cause it looks right, but you know, Dan Orlovsky, the guy
19:18who doesn't even want to comment on Aaron Rogers play because he says he's done more than
19:22him on the field. Who cares what that guy has to say? No, honestly though, I just, I
19:30look, I've, I've always been a Purdy fan myself. And I think you're either in that boat or you're
19:36not right. Sterling. Like there's a, you know, a lot of people like can't stand them. They,
19:40you know, noodle arm and all this stuff. And I just think at this point, if he continues
19:47down this trajectory, I just don't see how you can't convert to being a Purdy guy at
19:52this point. It just, it, there's no, there's nothing left to argue. It feels like to me,
19:56you know, this is the best quarterback they've had under Kyle Shanahan. There's, there's just
20:00no doubt about that. It's, it's very rare to see someone week by week continually prove
20:09haters wrong and yet still have a very large collective of them as loud as possible. Like we
20:16asked a question last year, like what does Brock Purdy still have to do? He waltzes into
20:19Philadelphia. The team is hindered by all, by all means. Like there's no one to throw to. It's Malik
20:24Turner catching balls in the playoffs, right? Taking snaps. And he goes out there and gets a W.
20:29Yeah. It makes some bad plays, but he rallies the team. They score late to get the win on the
20:33road.
20:33And yeah, the season didn't end the way you wanted it to, but it's like every year, every week,
20:39for the most part, he's doing something that makes you say, wow, or, oh my gosh, you see that one?
20:46What a throw by Brock Purdy. And it's like, there's rare people like Brock Purdy that can do what he
20:53does
20:54week by week, make people look utterly stupid for not believing in him. And you have to think in the
21:01back of his head, while he's a humble guy, when him and his wife are in bed, he's like,
21:06made them look pretty dumb today, honey. Right? And she's like, yeah, you did Brock.
21:11Like, good God. You were fantastic. That's, that's probably how it goes. Sterling. That's
21:15how I have it in my head. Maybe number three is on the way, buddy. Exactly. That's Sterling
