03:25They have been the last couple years, even with Brock Purdy playing good

03:29And it's like, you know, you want to really cement Brock Purdy in the
03:32MVP conversation?
03:34You go handle the Cardinals next week.
03:36You take it to Denver two weeks.
03:37And you give Seattle a run for their money.
03:39And then you're going to really see Brock Purdy in those odds.
03:42And maybe you have people placing bets on him at a higher clip in the next
03:46three weeks or so.
03:47Let's call it what it is, too, Sterling.
03:49Division opponents are always tricky.
03:51So whatever, you know, if they're going to pick us to beat them, you know,
03:54Arizona, that being, by 13 points, I mean, that seems crazy to me.
03:58It's very hard to win a division game by that many points.

04:03They haven't always had the easiest time with the Cardinals.
04:06I mean, you know, what, two years ago when the Cardinals came to San Francisco
04:11and came back and won that game?
04:13I mean, one of the more painful losses you'll really see.
04:16So I am not one to take the Cardinals lightly.
04:20But as you say, these are games, the Dolphins today and the Cardinals next week,
04:25that you really expect that they need to handle.
04:27And these are games that you need to add a win to the win column on your schedule.
04:31Because you have games like, let's be honest, the Denver Broncos are a serious,
04:36serious team.
04:37And that defense is for real.
04:38I know that they kind of struggled last week, but I have a lot of faith in that
04:42defense, frankly.
04:43And I think Nick Benito.
04:44Well, they held Jacksonville to 13 points today.
04:46Yeah, and the Jags are no slouches, man.
04:50I was at that game last year, Sterling, where, I mean, they kind of handled us.
04:54I'm going to be honest.
04:55The score did not really represent kind of what the Jaguars did to the 49ers last
04:59year and what Liam Cohen kind of put on them.
05:02So I definitely will not be poo-pooing that game.
05:06I'm actually really, really excited at that one.
05:10But, you know, all you can do is get the business done that's in front of you.
05:15And today they get it done, Sterling.
05:17And this was with relative ease, it felt like today.
05:21There just were not many bumps in the road today that you felt like this game could go
05:25the other way.
05:27Well, this game to me was like when you're road tripping with your family and your dad
05:31just pops that puppy in a cruise control.
05:34And he just sits there, foots off the gas, sitting back, one hand on the wheel, like,
05:39hey, you got any snacks, honey?
05:40Hey, Keith, can you pass me the water?
05:42And he's just cruising down, you know, the freeway going 75.
05:45No one's in front of him.
05:47And he's just having a good old time of like, it's going to be an easy day out there on
05:50the
05:50yard.
05:51And the Niners made this one look look really easy.
05:54But I want to ask you this because this game was close at halftime.
05:58And I don't think there was a concern of the Dolphins making it a game or carrying on the
06:05way they were running the football continually.
06:07A-chain looked awesome to begin this one.
06:09And we'll get into maybe some run defense problems for San Francisco a little later in
06:13the show.
06:13But was there any concern that the Niners weren't going to pull away and that the Dolphins
06:18continued to run the football well that this game may have been a one-score game or a
06:23two-score game late?
06:23And we're all sitting here, you know, fourth quarter like, hey, you know, the Niners didn't
06:27handle business or weren't going to handle business as good as they did because it was
06:32an eight-point game going into halftime.
06:34Yeah, I didn't have that concern, personally.
06:35I do think, yeah, look, it sucks to see a team that, you know, you really look at as,
06:44let's be honest, of the bottom of the barrel of just crap.
06:49Like, let's call it what it is.
06:51And, you know, when they are doing things that are working against your team, and this
06:56is a team that's defense struggled mightily last year.
06:59So I think we all still kind of have that hindering fear that that might, you know, butt
07:06its ugly head eventually here this season.
07:09It hasn't yet.
07:10And frankly, Raheem Morris' defense, I think, Sterling, has looked better than Robert
07:15Salas.
07:15And that's not just the big return of key players to me.
07:19I think that, to me, there's just more surprise to it.
07:23It's much harder for me to read what they're going to do on the screen.
07:27And if I'm having more trouble, I can guarantee you a quarterback who's under center is having
07:31more trouble.
07:32But, I mean, this is what Raheem Morris is known for, is, you know, disguising, you know,
07:37disguising zones and just making a defense so it's much, much, much harder to read than
07:43Robert Sala.
07:44And he's not just, you know, married to a 4-3 base defense.
07:48And I think that the 49ers have benefited from that.
07:52I think that we've seen, we've seen pressure manufactured when maybe they don't have the
08:00talent to do so.
08:00And I think we can credit Raheem Morris for that.
08:03I think that's okay.
08:05Well, you know, Raheem Morris kind of has a little Brian Flores to him where I think Flores
08:10is kind of in a league of his own when it comes to disguising his defense and generating
08:14pressure.
08:15But Morris does have the different looks under his belt of, I can toss this at you on one
08:19play, then kind of give you the same look, but bring pressure from a different angle
08:22on the next play.
08:24And that's kind of a dangerous thing to be as a coach when you then become able to change
08:31a game like that, right?
08:32Like we always talk about Kyle Shanahan being a game-changing offensive play caller.
08:36He himself is a weapon for the 49ers.
08:40And I want to be careful because Robert Sala is an amazing defensive coordinator.
08:46Like what he did last year and before in San Francisco in his first stint was incredible.
08:52He took this defense from nothing for two years and turned it into one of the best units in
08:56football in 2019.
08:58Last year, with what he had to work with, my goodness, that was a miracle.
09:03But Raheem Morris through two games, there's more diversity in the play calling.
09:08There's different coverage schemes tossed out there.
09:10And you're right.
09:10It's not just running for three, pin years back and go get it, boys.
09:14There is, you can tell there is finally a test for an opposing quarterback to kind of see
09:21if they can pass.
09:22And they haven't been through two games able to do that.
09:25But I want to ask you this too, because, you know, we've seen San Francisco play the Ram
09:30as Matthew Stafford, the MVP last year, then play maybe the worst team in football when
09:34it's all said and done.
09:36I don't know.
09:38Like, I'm not ready to put my flag on who the Niners are just yet.
09:43Like, I want to give it, you know, three to five games and they can truly tell who a team
09:47is.
09:47Like, I'm not buying the Vikings being 2-0 right now.
09:50That doesn't make sense to me.

09:56Well, they have a great defense, but, like, really, Aaron Jones is a running back.

10:03Even Murray, when he was healthy for a half of play, he's not a great quarterback, in
10:08my opinion.
10:08I think there's a hard cap as to how far they can go.
10:11And if you beat the Packers, sure, probably shouldn't have based on how the stats went.
10:17But I don't buy the Vikings as a true contender yet.
10:20The Packers narrowly escaped the Jets today.
10:22Are the Packers a sub-by-100 team?
10:25Are they an 8-win team?

10:28The Bears lost Caleb today for who knows how long.
10:31Who are the Bears this year?
10:31The Lions are not a great team, yet they're 1-1 somehow.
10:36That doesn't make sense to me either.
10:37And so, like, I don't know who the Niners are yet.
10:41We know a couple things about them.
10:43Great offensive coordinator.
10:45Great quarterback.
10:46Great offensive weapons.
10:47But maybe it's me.
10:50Despite them being 2-0, it's like, I want to see them play.
10:52And get in the gauntlet of the Cardinals, the Broncos, the Seahawks to truly believe or at least know who
10:59they are in 2026.

11:04Tell me I'm wrong, Carter.
11:06No, I actually don't think you're wrong.
11:09This might piss people off, but I think I'm totally in your boat in just the fact that I did
11:16buy into that the Rams clearly were jet lag to me.
11:20Like, they clearly, I thought, they were not ready to play that game.
11:24And the 49ers were ready to play that game.
11:26Very simple.
11:27And I think that was a huge difference maker in that game.
11:29Just, you know, I think there was other things, but I think that, to me, it was evident, just by
11:34the way Stafford looked alone.
11:36And that was a big concern of mine, which was, I just think a position that is, you know, you
11:42are forced to make decisions in nanoseconds.
11:45And if that decision isn't made in a nanosecond and you're late on a pass, it probably won't get completed
11:52and it might get intercepted instead.
11:54You know what I mean?
11:55And I think when you're staying up through the night and then expecting to play well, that just, that didn't
12:02make sense to me.
12:03And my questions about whether Stafford could do that were answered.
12:06He didn't play very well.
12:07Let's call it what it is.
12:08So, you take that game, which is in Australia and all that nonsense, and then you have that to look
12:14at, and then you have the Dolphins.
12:16I'm with you.
12:17It's very hard to know who this 49ers team is going forward.
12:21This isn't a big enough game sample size.
12:25But you can also say out of one side of your mouth, you like what you see early.
12:29I mean, yeah.
12:30It's hard to ignore.
12:32They're 2-0.
12:33They scored at least 27 points the first two games.
12:35Brock Purdy has six touchdowns to begin the year.
12:38And is on the way to, at least if this thing goes the way it is, going to be in
12:42the MVP conversation like he was in 2023.
12:45And the last time that happened, this team was in the Super Bowl.
12:48Like, you can't ignore the facts in front of you while also maybe being a little hesitant to be like,
12:54yeah, they're going to win the NFC West.
12:56And they're going, you know, like, I think I just, I want to see this translate to five games, to
13:02six games.
13:03Then you'd be like, okay, that is this year's Niners.
13:06Because you're right, Carter.
13:08They have looked fantastic.
13:10Like, what they put on display has maybe been the best two-game sample size of any team in football.
13:17But I do wonder, the Australia game, the Dolphins, maybe the first overall draft pick.
13:23Like, not to question the validity of that, because you're still 2-0.
13:27Now, I believe in the Niners more than I do other 2-0 teams, based off the history here in
13:32San Francisco.
13:34But I think the context behind their two games makes me just think, I want to see more.
13:40Before I'm in the betting odds of, they are the top dog for the NFC West.
13:44Or, you know, they're going to go to the Super Bowl or be a top contender.
13:47It's like, there's still 16 weeks of football to be played.
13:51And that's a long season to go.
13:53And every team's in the same boat.
13:55The Rams could lose tomorrow night, too.
13:57And we're all sitting here like, oh, the Rams are terrible, man.

16:49I was at practice one day, and they were going into a game against the Bears.
16:54This was a couple years ago.
16:56And they had come off a stretch of brutal games, and the Bears were not very good at this point.
17:01They were awful, in fact.
17:02And so I asked Kyle in the press conference, I said, you know, how are you going to get them
17:06up for this game?
17:07And he goes, this is an NFL team.
17:11That was, like, his only answer to me.
17:13I mean, this is an NFL team, and these guys get paid to do it.
17:16That's how they're going to get up for this game.
17:17And it was like, oh, all right, good point, Kyle.
17:20So, yeah.
17:21You think he walked back and was like, what a dumb place.
17:23Yeah, he walked back and goes, who is that idiot?
17:26Take his credential now.
17:28Never let it in here ever again.

17:31So, yeah, I think, look, as a fan, maybe it's hard to get up for these, right?
17:37Because it feels like the only thing that can happen is complete disaster,
17:42or it just goes the way that you are hoping it should go.

17:48Did you feel like it was pertinent for them to get a blowout today?

18:17But I think I would have been upset had this game been anywhere close to what it was in the

18:27But they scored 20 points in the third quarter and was like, oh, well, I can go outside.
18:31I can go out there, mow the lawn, come back inside, and still be up by three touchdowns.
18:35It's not going to be a problem.
18:36But I'm sure the rest of the fan base, like you, like myself, were just like, oh, the Dolphins week

18:45Like, this should be the easiest week to you've ever had.
18:49And, I mean, it ended up being that.
18:52But it's good to know that the Niners realize that winning against the Rams week one is kind of a
19:00luxury.
19:01It gives you house money to begin the year.
19:03Because I think a lot of us believe that you may win that game,
19:07but it's probably going to be a penciled loss just because the Rams had all this talent on paper.
19:12But you had to beat the Dolphins and the Cardinals.
19:15You had to at least be two and one going against the Broncos week four.
19:18And then be able to get over the hump against Seattle week five.
19:22But now that you're two and oh, you beat the Cardinals next week, hopefully.
19:26You can be three and oh to begin your year, two and oh in the division to begin the season
19:29too.
19:30And then now you're playing with more house money against Denver and Seattle in weeks four and five,
19:35giving you a nice cushion.
19:36You know, so I think San Francisco now is kind of playing with a little bit of house money to
19:41begin their season.
19:42You know, Sterling, I think that Kyle looks at it the same way you just described.
19:46As I think that they really made it a priority to win that game in Australia.
19:52And I think their actions leading up to that game were very clear that this one really matters.
20:00And the Rams actions, I think we talked about this last week.
20:03The Rams actions to me said, look, this is a long season.
20:06We know we're going to get into the playoffs, period.
20:09But I need the guys to be right for the stretch of the season, whether that's jet lag or whatever
20:14they believed,
20:15you know, showing up 24 hours ahead would help.
20:18I think that the Niners, though, put emphasis like we need to win this game and then we can worry
20:23about the games to come.
20:24I don't think it necessarily hurt that they saw their schedule followed up with the Miami Dolphins and then the
20:30Arizona Cardinals.
20:31Obviously, the Cardinals are kind of surprising people, but I think they're getting smoked right now.
20:35If I'm not, if I'm not wrong.
20:38It's not pretty.

20:40Yeah, if you're playing JSN in fantasy this week, you're probably going to lose from what I understand.

20:58do wonders for you going down the stretch here.

21:25and the offense can't move it at all?

21:29And, like, they've had other stretches of being three and five to begin a year, and, you know, how do
21:34you climb your way back into things?
21:36And they've been so resilient.
21:38But to me, it's like, can you build up enough equity almost at the beginning of the season to afford
21:44yourself maybe an off game later on
21:46where it doesn't cost you the division or a wild-card spot?
21:50And I think San Francisco, by winning against the Rams and today, has put themselves in a great spot where,
21:55yeah, you're 2-0.
21:56But now you also have the Cardinals, who are going to be a tough out, but it's a divisional game,
22:01at home, one more week,
22:03laying in your own bed, and kind of builds you up to your season becoming harder and harder.
22:09And I think, you know, the Niners and Kyle Shanahan have put themselves in a place where it's like, you
22:15know what?
22:15Like, we're going to keep this train moving as long as we can.
22:19And we know we're going to lose a game or two.
22:20That's just how things go.
22:21But the more wins you have early, the more you can afford to lose late.
22:26So they're 2-0.
22:27It's where you want to be.
22:28And it's hard to say otherwise because they've looked good doing it.
