00:30Welcome to the Pacific Air Show Gold Coast. This event takes over the entire coastline
00:36and over the weekend we're taking the action from every angle possible. Down on the street,
00:42high up on the balcony and right on the sand.
00:47Somewhere in this crowd today is a kid who's about to look up and decide that they belong
00:54up there too because the Pacific Air Show 2026 Gold Coast it starts right now. So we're just at the
01:01end
01:02of Carville Avenue here and I've got the surface paradise sign in front of me. So if you look at
01:07this map here of how the Pacific Air Show is organized if we've got the ocean there we've
01:14got the surface paradise sign here so at the moment we're here we're just in front of the sign and
01:21when we're enjoying the action from a balcony we're going to be up this end for the balcony viewing
01:28and then this side here is just down the street there a little bit towards the surf club so and
01:34then obviously we've got in the middle area here in the real prime spot we've got the chalets and
01:42cabanas but if you've got a general admitted admittance ticket you can obviously go the whole
01:48area of it which we've been doing we've been wandering around the whole ticketed area here
01:54and there and the advantage of that is they've then got you know the food trucks in that area
01:59they've got interactive displays that you can look at and we've got the entertainers going up and down
02:05but now at the moment we're out on the street just outside the ticketed area so I want to give
02:13you a
02:13sense of like when locals joke that the show is for free look oh we'll pan around in a second
02:18but
02:18we've got so many people out here that are effectively watching the show because you can see the planes
02:26obviously in the sky and you can see them coming from around there and there's a helicopter right now
02:31hovering there so the planes when they come right down over the beach they're circling all the way here
02:36however having the view from inside the ticketed area to outside the ticketed area
02:43you do miss quite a bit you do definitely miss the planes coming really low and because the placards
02:50are fairly high you will miss some of those best maneuvers and all that sort of thing but look having
02:57said that if you are in surface paradise even if you don't have a ticket you will see how many
03:02people
03:02are out here still enjoying our beautiful big open sky and the planes there it is
03:20wow here it comes and you can see how low it is over the crowd it's going to come right
03:28over us
03:28dirty pass it's no not dirty like that it's your mindset for better all you can go and do set
03:34it's an aerodynamically dirty pass the gear are down the flaps are down the airplane is configured
03:39for landing and here it is about now for the slow speed pass everybody hoping they can be the
03:46one that's born that's born to burn that's more for these
03:55like a whole city block coming at you right there the c17 she's a big girl but she likes long
04:02romantic
04:03walks on the beach at sunset and that's what we're going to give her today goldie watch her turn now
04:07out there to the right powering back up with those big massive turbo fan engines and again keep in mind
04:13well capable of carrying over 170 000 pounds of cargo that's 18 pallet positions on board 10 humvees
04:23like i was talking about two apache helicopters or even a tank of them once abrams furthermore
04:29that c17's got over 240 000 pounds of eternal fuel storage i know it's not polite to talk about
04:37ladies i was going to say but this baby can carry some gas i'm telling you what look at it
04:42when air
04:42to air refueling it's not even possible the c17 could still get there to put an entire battalion in
04:49the back end of that thing and fly it just about anywhere in the world remarkable machine both slow and
04:55fast watch it now as it wraps back up here with its fly-by-wire system four independent flying computers
05:04managing all of the systems on board 13 hydraulic pumps that actually make the airplane turn the way
05:11it can turn and right now with wings level here it is inbound you'll notice you'll notice that this
05:18big airplane about as tall as a five-story building from tip to the very top it's still going to
05:25accelerate
05:26and move on back in here here it comes down from the left the c17 from the united states air
05:32force going
05:33to show you just how tight it can move now brought to you yes you got to be nimble don't
05:40you to be an
05:40athlete absolutely but you can also be large and charged watch the girthy girl go right around here
05:48to the left with the max performance
05:50here we go
06:15so i fly aerobatic aircraft so i actually teach people how to do aerobatics
06:25do you really yeah so that's my day job oh wow what a day job yeah so what inspired you
06:33to make on the flyer uh look i just always knew i wanted to do it so as soon as
06:37i got out of high
06:38school i decided you know what i'm going to go to fly and uh here i am sort of seven
06:43years later
06:51well you know i wasn't the brightest tool in the shed but uh you know i definitely worked hard to
06:57achieve the dream and uh you know it's just one of those things if you set your heart to it
07:02you'll
07:02get to it so what would you tell other people that would love to be a pilot would love to
07:07apply to it
07:08well look it's not rocket science um and look as long as you uh have the determination to be able
07:14to learn and uh you know be critical of yourself i think anybody can do it it's easier than driving
07:19a car
07:22so are you ready to dance gold coast i know i saw it on millions down plane spotting
07:40here's the mall
08:12i'm sorry mayor we're going to need that martin back to blow in some more sand
08:17that's what i'm talking about
08:21what an incredible sun what a great asset for this let's see the marines right here on the back
08:27yeah look at it back there mark that could be you i'd go up there i'm telling you what i
08:31would
08:31do it it's a whole experience when you're in the ticketed area you get the commentary you get the
08:36media all those times the transition again another transition into forward flight and that is where
08:42his favorite form of flight in the osprey another bow he wanted to give you another look at it he's
08:50just saying good day on that one yes there you go oh look at that hanging out with the osprey
08:59if you just love your aviation that is one of the great sides of aviation you appreciate how difficult
09:05that is what's happening in the cockpit right now how are they managing everything that's going on there
09:09so it's a great practice in crm there's a lot of communication going on between the crew chiefs
09:13in the back and the pilots up front make sure everything's squared away and ready to transition
09:17into airplane mode so right now we're making sure our gears up the nacelles there's a corridor that
09:22we have to abide by to allow us to continue to forward flight oh that is just wonderful there they
09:28go
09:28you'd never get to see a plane like that or a helicopter or osprey like that up close
09:36yeah great job there i heard wait box and in fact while we're here i'll show you you can see
09:42a line
09:43of boats so that's obviously the um border where they've got um for the boaties that want to see the
09:50air show from the water i don't think they've bought tickets but that line is heavily controlled
09:57i think you are oh yes we are
10:05so when i say the air show kind of takes over the entire coastline that's not that big an exaggeration
10:11because the planes go everywhere here on the gold coast even when they're doing the show and that's
10:17for a very good reason so they basically they don't just magically appear here on the beach
10:23they're coming from koolangatta airport and as the crow flies i think it's about 20 kilometers or
10:29something so they're coming straight from the airport and it doesn't take them very long but
10:34when they get here they're still got to adhere to it's like you know when you think of planes landing
10:40they've got to wait for the plane that's doing its show to finish and wait for the signal that it's
10:46safe for them to come so what they have is they have holding patterns around the coast basically
10:52and one of them is behind our apartment around where chevron one is being built so over chevron island
10:59and they do that loop behind the high rises that are in front of me now and then they come
11:03down on the beach
11:08we run into maverick and rooster right here in the danger zone yeah right here in the danger zone
11:13exactly what's the best thing about being here and now i love meeting the kids and the families
11:20everyone that comes out it's an incredible experience yeah hiring and what about the goalposts
11:27fantastic it is
11:28oh yeah beautiful place

12:23i think it's been clearing the water because we've got an aerobatic helicopter coming next after these
12:28suits is so otherworldly if you miss this this morning you're going to look at all the books gathering down
12:37here and so since kids you have my privacy just push the dolls out of the way and this is

12:43you don't want to miss watch now as they light the fire in these gravity jet suits one of the
12:52first and only red
12:53full jet suit athlete he's also a red bull air race champion listen to the sound now as it cools

14:35You just look up and there's a person in a suit right at you and right over you.

14:41And it was like how my ears are really bringing that.
14:45It's honestly so surreal.
14:46I mean.
14:47I've been here.
14:48I love it.
14:49We're going to see all these crazy places.
14:51Yeah, I know.
14:52You've got a good view from up there.
14:54You're in fire.
14:55We're worried though that we keep getting in people's ways or seeing it.

14:59I think the sky is pretty cool.
15:03So, of course, every major event always has the merch tents.
15:07So, we've got the merch tents here and you can get everything from t-shirts, caps, backpacks,
15:12key rings, stubby holders, earmuffs, even umbrellas, which would come in handy here,
15:20whether it rains or to shelter you from the sun.
15:23So, at the Pacific Airshow, you can also pick up a new car if you're in the market for a
15:28beautiful Corvette.
15:30I think I'll go with this one.
15:32It's a beautiful red colour.
15:33We've also got a really cool blue one there, but I think I'll go with the red.

15:51They are so gorgeous.
15:53But what's really rude though is when there's a whole group of planes, most of them go one
15:58way and then some will go the other way so you don't know which one they're chasing.

17:01And that boy, when you have AFGAS, my wife always says, Kez, you have AFGAS in your vein.

17:10I said, that's alright.
17:19The formation players are so awesome seeing them in the sky.
17:23I mean, when they're individual planes, they'll do all those moves and those rolls.
17:26But when they're together, they're flying all together.
17:30And their concentration must be immense.
17:33Obviously, you don't want to run into each other.
17:35And from here, looking at them in the sky, they seem so close together.
17:39And then when they're flying towards each other and they cross, like boy, you would really
17:44want to get that right.
17:46But yeah, it's amazing.

17:52This really is non-stop action.
17:55They did say that.
17:56They did just advertise that beforehand.
17:59It's going to be non-stop action at the Pacific airspace.
18:01It really is.
18:03It seems like there's an aircraft in the air almost all the time.
18:06Like that one just appeared out of nowhere.
18:10Like we just had the formation flyers and then we got this one.
18:13So yeah.
18:14They really are bringing the planes in, it feels like, back to back.
18:17Firearm brands, the Southern Knights, and a lot of cargo was flown in these airplanes.
18:22You'll notice the square wingtips too.
18:24This is the Laner model BJT, highly modified.
19:03And it was in that role that, uh, he was lucky enough to be the Texan designer.
19:06And it was a display pilot.
19:08On return to Australia in 2024, a kinder was posted to Central Flying School as a Q5.
19:13Now's a good time to get those cameras ready for the final maneuver of the day.
19:40Ladies and gentlemen, you can follow the roulettes on social media.

22:40When I was 11, my grandmother bought me a model glider.

22:53It was tissue paper, and it eventually flew.

31:00What we generally do is we travel around the country, visit air shows, schools, local events,
31:07that sort of thing.
31:08We also do things like the burner display that we're doing here.
31:10We sometimes do tethered flying, so take people for rides.
31:14And yeah, that's basically what we do.
31:21Well, if you're lucky enough to have an apartment in one of these beachfront high-rises in Surfers Paradise,
31:27this is the view that you get from level 14.
31:31We're on level 14 at a friend's apartment here.
31:34And I tell you what, we have got a fantastic view of the action from here.
31:38And you can see down on the beach here, or actually we've got some planes coming up here.
31:43You might be able to see them behind me.
31:45But they go right past here, right past the balcony.
31:49Like it is just incredible.
31:51See, like here they come now.
31:52So, it is just so wonderful.
32:10And that is just a wonderful perspective of this plane, of these planes.
32:15Like I actually saw the plane, you know like a lot of the really good manoeuvres does happen in Show
32:21Central.
32:21So, I'll point out Show Central in a moment.
32:23But as those planes were going past, they're like pretty much eye level from up here.
32:29And they were doing their turns and rolls.
32:31And so, the view from here is just so amazing.
32:35And we'll show you in a moment, like sort of along the beach, the set up here.
32:41So, all along here, we've got the free area.
32:45So, these are like all, I guess, visitors, locals, all watching the show from here.
32:50And then if you can see that fence lies down there, just on this side of the red tractor.
32:56That's the end then of the free area.
32:58And then from there on is the general ticketed area.
33:03So, that goes right up to, I mean there's actually, you might not be able to see it from here,
33:09but there's a stage there I can see.
33:11And then there's a number mask beyond that, and that's the Show Center Zone.
33:15So, there's different levels of tickets you can get.
33:18You can get a general entry ticket, which is, you know, that whole big area there.
33:23And then the Show Center Zone as well.
33:26But, like I said, if you're lucky enough to have a beachfront apartment and be up high, as high as
33:32level 14, you know, you can just look out off your balcony and the planes really are eye level.
33:39It is just amazing.
33:46So, we've just been having the scout helicopter moving around in circles, I think, to really clear the airway for
33:54a giant that's on its way.
33:57And in fact, I can see it.
33:59It's sort of coming towards us now.
34:01It's still quite a bit in the distance, but I can see it's got its wingspan out.
34:06And I have to say, this is, you're going to hear it in a minute.
34:09You're going to hear that roar.
34:11And from level 14 up, I'm nearly going to be able to touch it, I think.
34:16My heart's actually starting to race.
34:17I can see it coming.
34:19You know, it's like those movies when they have a camera panned on and the plane's coming closer and closer.
34:24I can, I can really see it and it's going to become, ah, there she is.
34:27Absolutely.
34:43Oh, that was magnificent.
34:47I could see it, I could see its lights, its wingspan.
34:50And then just as it sort of hit there, just past us actually.
34:54And it's doing a steep, steep turn now again.
34:57It did a really steep turn.
34:58And to see that beautiful, magnificent plane really tilt over, just over the ocean.
35:04Wow.
35:05It's amazing.
35:06That's why people come to the Pacific Air Show.
35:08It's amazing.
35:21And here comes another beautiful big plane that we can see right off the balcony here.

35:58And so maybe you went out and hit that one was off the path.
36:07So the plane we were just watching there was the RAAF C30 and it's a cargo plane and one
36:15of the unique aspects of that plane is that it can land on short runways and I guess that's
36:20what you come to air shows for to see the planes manoeuvres and these tilts and these
36:25turns and all of that up close that you just normally don't see it obviously
36:31anywhere you do see it in the movies but it's so much better seeing it with your
36:35own eyes right in front of you here at the air show absolutely fantastic
37:03so we're here on the sand we're actually in the free area so this is where you can just come
37:09if
37:09you don't have a ticket anyone can come down to the beach and we're very excited because we are
37:15waiting for the finale the absolute showstopper the highlight of the Pacific air show and that
37:22is the gorgeous RAAF fighter jet and they're going to be coming down low here over the beach and just
37:31tearing up the sky and the sound is just going to be magnificent someone spotted and it's coming
37:39someone's someone pointed it out to me so it is it's out in the sea already so you probably can't
37:44see it in this resolution but i can see it with my eyes oh thank you for pointing that out
37:49yeah so
37:50someone had sharp eyes than me so it's already out there it's over the ocean and it's there
37:56so it's probably um oh i think it's probably waiting for the signal to come in so it's obviously out
38:03there circling and it's probably waiting to coordinate with the comment with the commentary
38:08in the show center zone but yeah so it's out there so everyone's gearing up and everyone's ready because
38:17when when it comes in it's gonna come in and it's gonna be fast and it's gonna be loud
38:25oh how exciting that someone actually spotted it way out there with the ocean
38:34so we can all feel it where you can feel the crowd's anticipation for this one

43:34I almost feel like crying, it's so beautiful to see that, it does, it just moves you, just
43:42the power of it, the scale of it, and it's ours, that's our own Australian RAAF fighter
43:50in the jet, and it does, it's beautiful, here it comes for another pass.
44:20Oh, they've just let the gate down now, so they've just moved one of the gates, so I
44:27assume that maybe, maybe now at the end of the show or at the very end of the fighter jet's
44:35performance, they're moving those gates now that separates the ticketed area to the free
44:42area, so perhaps for the very end now, so the fighter jet's still coming through, but they've
44:48just let the gate open too.
45:23Oh, maybe that was, maybe that was it's goodbye, maybe that's, maybe that's why they just
45:31opened the gates just at the end there.
45:33Because look, I tell you what, there's not really any point having a gate there for the
45:40ticketed area, I mean the free area, the ticketed area, when you've got that in the sky.
45:44Oh no, it might be coming through again.
45:47So I was just going to say, really, I don't think there could be much difference between
45:51the free area and the ticketed area for this, when this is in the sky.
45:54But yes, they have, they've opened the gate, so anyone can walk past, but it might be coming
45:59through one last time.

46:59Well what an absolute majestic sight to behold, that fighter jet, I tell you what, the sound
47:09goes through you, it moves you, I actually felt emotional seeing that, seeing the best
47:15in the world of anything, or the best of, you know, and the fighter jet really is just top
47:21of the ranks, but that was amazing, basically that was really amazing, if you haven't been
47:28to a Pacific show, I mean, if you have never been to an air show, it's so worth coming,
47:33they really always will have something so magnificent as the finale of it.
47:39I'm wondering, I keep hearing it, you can probably hear it all the way to Koolangatta, it's that
47:45loud, but that was wonderful, but that was so, so wonderful to see that.
47:54Well what an absolute spectacle here in Surfers Paradise, taking in the show from the ground
48:00level, right up to high above the beach, really gives you the full picture of this event.
48:06The speed, the sound and the scale of these aircraft against the ocean horizon, I think
48:12makes this one of the most incredible events on the Gold Coast calendar.
