00:00Well, it is absolutely remarkable that a party founded in 2019 in Portugal is now leading in
00:06the polls for the very first time. Now, before I get to the Chega party and their pretty rapid
00:14rise to the top of Portuguese politics, let's just look at what's been going on in Portugal,
00:19another country that has seen an absolute population explosion due to immigration. You
00:26can see here between 2021 and 2025, a 7.8% rise in residents driven by migration. You can see
00:36here
00:37the number of foreign residents rising to 14% of the total population. And you can see the
00:44comparison there. 2025, you're talking about 1.6 million foreign residents. The foreign population
00:50in 2021 was 849,000. So that is a massive surge. And you can see here, a huge number of
01:01those
01:01foreigners in Portugal are coming from Brazil,
01:07but also Angola, India, Cape Verde, Nepal, and Bangladesh as well. Now, in terms of the political
01:16shift in Portugal, it's been pretty remarkable to see shifting even to a position with a left-wing
01:22president that actually they brought in a burqa ban that people covering their face without an
01:29exemption can now be fined. You can see there. And in terms of the Chega party founded in 2019 by
01:37Andre Ventura, he has been at times compared to Trump in America, the sort of Portuguese Trump,
01:44though he has been critical of America's actions in Iran. But it is astonishing that this party now
01:52has risen very rapidly. It's becoming the most popular in the country now, because in this latest
01:59polling, just shy of 31%, now backing Chega, this sort of nationalist Eurosceptic party in Portugal,
02:07the socialists in second, and then the sort of governing coalition, actually now in third place.
02:16This party calling for stricter border controls, protection of national sovereignty, traditional
02:22values, harsher punishments for sex offenders, now leading in the polls in Portugal. Pretty remarkable
02:30stuff. Please do let me know, though, your thoughts on that in the comments below. Please do whack this
02:34video. A quick thumbs up. And of course, as ever, cheers for watching.
