Hutch called into Karsch and Anderson Monday afternoon to talk about the return of Brian Branch and how much better the defense played against the Green Bay Packers.
Transcript
00:02hutch as always we appreciate your time thanks for being with us the lions win 20 to 17 and
00:08we'll open with how good does it feel for you guys to get a win
00:12and you guys defensively to hold that offense to just 17 points
00:18it's huge man it's a it's a step in the right direction um so proud of how uh how our
00:26defense
00:26played um really top down guys are making plays at every level and uh man that's um it's exactly
00:34what we needed right there we needed a game where man the defense had to step up and kind of
00:39uh wear
00:39the hard hat and i think we did just that you know a couple moments that were pretty cool uh
00:44where
00:45where brian branch was involved he makes a tackle early in the game and gets announced over to
00:50loudspeaker and the crowd goes nuts and then he has the interception which was just just fantastic
00:55talk about what it's like to get bb back at in the secondary he's huge man i mean i was
01:02talking
01:03about it all week how pivotal he is and uh for him to come back like in that fashion making
01:10uh a big play like that interception it's um that as a guy coming off an injury it just makes
01:18everything worth it for for brian so um i'm pumped to have him back and uh man i think i
01:25think we're
01:25i'm gonna open up right now you know that your quarterback sack dan arlovsky did a great breakdown
01:31saying part of the reason why you were able to get to the quarterback so fast is their left tackle
01:36had to watch the football because it can't hear the snap count because it's too loud at ford field
01:41and by the time he turned his head back you were already a step beyond him is that is that
01:47a real
01:48thing like the fans can make that much of a difference that directly leads to you getting a quarterback sack
01:54yeah i would say it's it's it's definitely more like if you play for um a team you know like
02:06detroit it's and when you're at home you get it's all silent cadence right so it's all on the head
02:11bobs
02:11and so um as pass rushers you kind of call it a home get off versus an away get off
02:18because obviously
02:18when you're away on third down you got patrick mom's going out you know it's it's not as uh it's
02:25not as decisive as just one head bob and you're rolling you know so um yeah it was just it
02:31was just
02:32uh the play cut the play clock was just getting low and um they were just they were doing a
02:38bunch of
02:38head bobs and uh just kind of pulled the trigger on that one so um yeah that was uh i
02:44talk about it
02:45all the time though i mean get off is the most important thing and you just get off the ball
02:49and let everything else handle itself so that was the only quarterback sack against jordan love
02:55what did the packers do to keep you guys off the quarterback and and are you surprised that you
03:00guys only got to him the one time to take him down with the football uh i thought he was
03:07getting the
03:07ball out quickly they weren't it wasn't a big uh they weren't shipping a lot this game you know it
03:12was
03:12kind of not really what i was expecting but i think their counter to that was hey okay we're
03:17not going to chip we're going to get more guys out in space so we can kind of dink and
03:21dunk a little
03:21bit and um yeah i thought i thought he was kind of uh and even you know really love is
03:28always really
03:29good at uh throwing off his back foot if he's feeling pressure he'll back up like 15 yards
03:35um pretty good pretty good awareness you know so uh yeah he's always he's always tough to get down
03:43so i'm happy i i got him once i think i probably left one other one out there while watching
03:49the
03:49film so um yeah but uh he's he's uh he's he's tough to take down for sure one of the
03:56things they
03:56they do is they they actually hold you and there was a huge holding call late in that game on
04:01their
04:02offensive line but in your estimation i can't wait to hear this answer in your estimation how
04:06many times a game do you get held yeah it's like there's like there's there's a lot of things that
04:14happen and again it's just like uh not even holding it like sometimes you know people got
04:20inaccurate hands and you're just getting like you're just getting into your rush and you're
04:23someone throws a hand right in your face mask and it kind of disorients you a little bit
04:28so it's just like there's a lot of little things that kind of just happen it's like
04:32very bang bang stuff um but you kind of just you just gotta you you know there's only they're only
04:38going to call the holding sometimes like especially in my situation when jordan kind of he kind of breaks
04:45out to the right that's that's the most typical holding calls you get are when the quarterback's
04:50movement you can kind of you can kind of sell that that he's got you around uh around the shoulder
04:55so
04:56yeah it's hard to put a number on it i guess it kind of depends what what rushes i'm doing
05:01um so yeah but there's definitely yeah it's there sometimes what what crosses the line for you
05:11uh that an offensive lineman does that really pisses you off
05:24is it something that's said to you something they physically do what what really what grinds your
05:29gears uh you know i can't even think of anything even if there was something i probably wouldn't say
05:38it so that would enforce people to do that so um i'm gonna just leave that one that
05:44leave the fifth yeah uh do you like dropping into coverage
05:50yeah yeah i i dropped uh i think i dropped once this game yeah uh they can they completed it
05:55over
05:55uh sky we said if sky was like a couple inches taller maybe he could have gotten a hand on
06:00it but
06:01um yeah it's good it's a good change up because usually i'm involved in a lot of the blitzes
06:06because they're trying to keep me in the rush but it's a good change up sometimes for
06:10um protection reasons trying to uh you know isolate the blitz and they lined you up once
06:17standing up like a linebacker how do you how do you like that say one more time but they lined
06:22you
06:23up once like standing up as a linebacker i thought how do you like that it's good yeah i i
06:29one of those
06:30late in the game i kind of came scot-free and um that was great that was that was kind
06:36of a new call
06:37kind of uh you have uh more like game plan specific calls you never really we haven't really
06:42called that until then so yeah that was uh that was a fun way it's it's tough when i think
06:47me alain
06:48and uh derrick moore were all standing up and it's like protection wise it's like they have to kind
06:54of figure it out on the run when we show the final picture uh when the ball snaps so it's
07:00uh it makes
07:01it hard for them for sure last couple of weeks i think the defense has really kind of found their
07:05stride uh certainly against the packers like doug said earlier you're holding them to 17 points
07:11but i do you guys take it personally at all when the offense is going for an fourth down so
07:16often
07:16as if to say that they don't trust you guys to get the stop or is this just a man's
07:21football
07:23i don't know i don't really see it as like disrespectful i just see it as hey we got all
07:29right
07:29we got another opportunity to uh to uh you know make a big play and um yeah i don't i
07:37i think they
07:37converted some of them but uh overall i'm happy with how we played you had a near pick six take
07:47us
07:47through what happened on that play don't talk to me out i just i i have never like my only
07:56excuse i have
07:57is he like lifeled it and it was like i was like five yards away from him uh that's the
08:03only excuse
08:04but i even then i expect myself to catch that that uh i i think it actually like hit off
08:09my forearm i
08:10actually don't think i was even that close to catching it didn't even like touch my hands
08:15um so yeah but like from the beginning i just felt uh i just felt the screen and so i
08:22just kind of put
08:22my foot in the ground on my first step i kind of was just waiting patiently for him to throw
08:27it
08:27i i just the whole thing was perfect right right up until it hit my forearm and i i realized
08:34that
08:35missed opportunity at number six well the farm does not have fingers last i checked so it's it's okay
08:42how aware are you that uh you guys as a defensive front after they've called a couple of rough into
08:48passing calls uh against green bay on jared goff how aware are you guys that look we gotta be
08:54careful here because they've already gotten them for a couple we better mind our p's and q's and and
08:58not go extracurricular here yeah it's just i feel you it just comes down to discipline and staying
09:05focused on the on the moment you know uh i think like that that that derrick barnes penalty was kind
09:11of like a makeup call for some of theirs which i was i don't know i didn't i didn't like
09:16the the
09:17de barris penalty but i thought we for the most part we were pretty disciplined you know do you sit
09:23in awe watching jameer gibbs and some of his runs oh my yeah sometimes i sit there i'm like i'm
09:31glad
09:31that dude's on our team but i don't have to tackle that dude because that would uh he's uh he's
09:36a matchup
09:36nightmare man and he's um the way he can kind of evade in the in the hole like there was
09:42that one
09:42play and again that linebacker shot the gap and he just made a quick move and the douche fell on
09:48his
09:48face so i mean it happens i've i've i've uh you play against great running backs sometimes they get
09:55you and uh you've got to swallow your pride and move on to the next foot getting ready for the
10:01vikings
10:02on sunday obviously another big division game they're undefeated they've been playing a great
10:06defensively offensively they've got weapons does it help you you think facing say bryce young
10:12earlier in the season to help prepare for a quarterback like kyler murray
10:19um
10:23you know i actually haven't watched too much the vikings this year so i'm not i'm not too keen on
10:28what kyler has done uh so i don't know but yeah in terms of the similarities in their height i
10:34guess
10:34uh aside from that i'm not i'm not too aware of uh you know their similarities but yeah he's an
10:41athlete man he's i played we played him a couple years ago in az um and he was uh yeah
10:48you're game
10:48planning for that dude you just got to be on your p's and q's with uh you know the read
10:53zone rules
10:54uh the the uh quarterback scrambling uh yeah he's a he's a great player man and uh we gotta uh
11:03we
11:04gotta do our best to shut him down all right hutch every week we get a listener question and our
11:08producer kang sees them all sifts through them and what do we got this week kang all right hutch this
11:13one comes from kang from behind the glass oh wait that's me aiden man you do this you do this
11:19awesome
11:19thing hutch's heroes it's a foundation for people i don't know that focuses on helping children and
11:23families facing life-threatening illnesses and physical challenges a couple weeks ago at the
11:29home game versus the jets you were able to meet gavin and gavin you guys just posted this on the
11:34house
11:34of hutch instagram yesterday gavin was the last hero that you have yet to meet in person and i know
11:39that
11:40family personally so i want to thank you personally for me for doing something so cool and awesome
11:44i think it's tremendous work that you're doing my question is um why why did you choose this as
11:51you're like you know off the field charity work i mean what does it mean to you overall to doing
11:56stuff
11:56like that oh okay well first off thanks that's that's very uh very kind of you yet and gavin and
12:03i got to meet gavin and his dad after the jets game and like they were i remember after meeting
12:10them
12:10we talked for probably like 20 minutes and they are some of the the kindest people that that that i've
12:19ever met and um i never quite met a kid like him and the dad was awesome um really that
12:26was that was
12:28like a home run hero right there um but what made me get into it i just uh
12:36i kind of always was searching for a uh a deeper purpose um aside from football and aside from you
12:45know because uh when you achieve really anything in life i feel like there's this level of uh
12:54of always wanting more it's it's kind of uh okay you you you win an award what's next you know
13:01and i and
13:01to me i i felt like channeling uh my purpose into a platform where i can shine light upon these
13:11kids
13:12stories and um like to me that was i've always been very inspired by kids who are fighting because they
13:19they they just don't know anything else but to fight and and to be unbroken you know so um
13:27i'm always i've always been inspired by that and i think when i got my platform being able to do
13:34what
13:34i've done with the you know the jugs writing down these kids mantras on the jugs um and just being
13:41able to shine awareness on their story i think has been uh it's been one of the probably the most
13:48gratifying thing that i've i've uh i've gotten from from this sport for sure yeah hutch you made
13:55him wait two years man come on man what was that about i'm just kidding man because he was the
14:02last one i think two years ago i mean it was um in houston you guys were supposed to meet
14:06but uh
14:06i was supposed to meet him in houston and then my freaking my uh leg decided to do something yeah
14:11all right
14:15hutch appreciate the time thank you very much great work off the field too
14:18and uh keep it up on defense you guys look better and uh we hope to talk after another huge
14:23win next week
14:25all right sweet thanks guys there he is aiden hutchinson joining us for our weekly
