The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has reported 10,060 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,887 deaths since the outbreak began in May, according to health authorities. As of October 25, the outbreak had affected 66 health zones across eight provinces, with eastern Ituri province accounting for 71.7% of confirmed cases. The reported case fatality rate stands at 48.6%, underscoring the severity of the health emergency.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Cases have also been reported in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and France, according to the report. The outbreak has become the largest and deadliest recorded in DR Congo, raising concerns about cross-border transmission and the urgent need for effective public health measures.
