Cam talks about writing complex female characters and interacting with fans on Instagram with Emily Curl at CMA Fest.
Transcript
00:00If you think about life as a lake and you get your boat and you get out there and you're
00:05kind of playing battleship and everyone's trying to find their piece of the water, you can do life that way
00:10or you can leave, go find water, bring it back and raise everybody up.
00:22How do you think the country music industry can better support female artists or other people behind the scenes? I
00:29know this is kind of something we talked about too that you're so outspoken about. That's why we love asking
00:32you.
00:32Probably the first thing is for people to actually acknowledge that there is an issue. There's not enough of us
00:38to begin with and then there's barriers the whole way around. So we have to, I think first step is
00:44just everybody wake up and feel okay talking about it and realizing that it's all of us together that are
00:49responsible and all of us together that are going to fix it.
00:51Another thing that I really admire about you is I feel like your songs are so real and they show
00:56complex female character and there's more like real female representation.
01:00Who else do you think in the country music industry is doing a really good job of showing more complex
01:05female characters?
01:05Oh, that's a really interesting question. Complex female characters. I just have to say I adore Kacey Musgraves and everything
01:13she does and what she writes about.
01:15I felt like talking about that song Mother that she has where she's speaking to her mom, talking about then
01:21on top of that what her mom is experiencing about her mom.
01:24Like, I mean, yes, I've been needing, like I didn't know I needed that song, but I did.
01:29So I think just as real as people get about their own experience, that unlocks, you know, parts of me
01:35in my mind too.
01:36So she always does a great job of diving headfirst into whatever she does.
01:40Yeah. How do you think other artists can do a better job of telling more real stories about women?
01:45Um, I think being less afraid and taking lots of risks, but I would say it's not really, I think
01:51that's kind of on female artists, but also I think women that are trying to make a living and maybe
01:57support themselves or their families, that's not what people are playing.
02:01And that's not what gets you paid. So I'd say that's a hard thing to swallow.
02:07So I'm not going to fault anybody for making the music they think is going to get them on the
02:11radio or anything.
02:12I think the issue is definitely more about who's letting what kind of music have a platform.
02:17Right. Giving it that voice.
02:19How has, you know, something like Instagram changed the way that maybe you approach projects or interact with your fans
02:24or kind of approach new music?
02:25I really have tried to figure out my own way of doing things because I like making art that makes
02:32me feel moved and hopefully people like me feel moved.
02:35My favorite thing to do is to post something meaningful to me instead of doing like, here's the rules of
02:41what gets you the most likes and whatever.
02:43Post something that I want to post and then interact with people in my community, how I want to interact.
02:48And I police my stuff because I don't believe that Instagram and Twitter and Facebook watch what's going on enough.
02:56This is my community and I'm owning it and I've created this space like with this platform.
03:01I'm open to discussions.
03:02You can disagree with me, but like if you're going to say something that is blatantly hurtful to other people,
03:07like, I'm in there.
03:09I'm going to find that shit.
03:11So that whole space is, I feel like, such a weird thing.
03:15It like is really important, but it isn't.
03:17Yeah.
03:18Well, that's interesting.
03:19That stuck with me.
03:19You saying of like, I created this space, so I'm going to foster it.
03:22It's like your little community that you're going to take care of.
03:24It's like planting a little garden.
03:26It's like, yeah, it's like water.
03:27Oh, it's my garden.
03:28Okay, so Cam, before I let you go, if you could give our audience one piece of advice that maybe
03:33someone has told you that stuck with you, what do you think it would be?
03:36Like, what do they need to hear?
03:37Ooh, okay, I heard this yesterday.
03:38All of this is in this system that we make up together.
03:42We're just making it up.
03:43And you can live outside of it and help change the system to be a little bit better.
03:49And it's not easy, and it's terrifying and depressing most of the time, but also it's freeing, you know?
03:55And like, I know that doesn't help you in your day-to-day grind, because I know you have to
03:59grind, but not all of it is like a setup just like this.
04:04Like, there can be other ways to do things.
04:06You forget to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of like, it doesn't have to be
04:09this way, there are other ways to do it.
04:10I'm just sort of following what this is.
04:12And that's why I think it's so important for people like you to get up on stage and show a
04:15different way of doing things.
04:17Cam, thank you so much for being here with us.
04:18Yeah, so nice to talk to you all the time.
04:20Yeah, I love it, honestly.
04:21Let's make this a regular thing.
04:22Deal.
04:24We'll talk to you all the time.
04:25You
