Ashley Campbell talks about her dad and making music that's true to her at CMA Fest with Emily Curl.
Transcript
00:00Perfect!
00:09What's up guys? It's Emily Curl here with Refinery29 and we are at the CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee.
00:14And I'm so excited because I'm sitting next to Ashley Campbell. Ashley, thank you so much for being here.
00:18Thanks for having me.
00:18We are a New York City-based company.
00:21Yes!
00:21And so, but with that, I'm from the South, so I love country music, but for the ones who don't
00:26listen,
00:26what would you say are three songs they have to listen to?
00:30Oh man, Johnny Cash's version of Sunday Morning Coming Down.
00:34It just hits me right here every time. It's just such a perfect song.
00:38I freaking love Dolly Parton's version of the song that she wrote, Fly Away Bluebird.
00:45I can't remember what it's called, like the actual title. God, what else?
00:49Wichita Lineman, my dad's song. That's just the most heart-wrenching, beautiful song.
00:53We're all about self-care and mental health. What is your self-care routine?
00:59Or if you're having like a bad day, how do you bounce back from that?
01:02Other than wine.
01:05You have to...
01:06My kind of girl.
01:08Ever since I lost my dad, I've realized that the people in your life are the most important thing above
01:13what's going on, above your career.
01:15And so keeping your friends and family close and in the loop and with you and talking to them regularly
01:21really helps with mental stability.
01:23And it helps keep your demeanor in a positive light, you know?
01:27When you write new songs, you're going to music. Do you channel a lot of your dad in your music
01:31too?
01:32Definitely. I always think, you know, is this true to...
01:35My dad always said, makes music that's true to you and that you like that you would want to listen
01:39to and chances are other people are going to want to listen to it as well.
01:42And so anytime I write a song, I say, is this me? Is this like what I want to say
01:47straight from my mouth, you know?
01:49We're all humans. We're all going to have bad days, but being a difference between a normal person and a
01:53celebrity is yours has to be in the public eye.
01:55What does that look like and kind of how do you navigate that territory?
02:00I don't know. Being a songwriter, you kind of open yourself up to the public in your very most emotionally
02:06vulnerable moments.
02:07Like with my song, Remembering. That's such a personal song.
02:10And I feel like people really relate to that and it opens the conversation up for other people to talk
02:16about the same thing that's going on with them.
02:18And so when people tell me that my song helped them get through the same thing, that it just means
02:23the world to me.
02:23And it makes you feel like you're not alone. As much as my song made them feel like they're not
02:27alone, they make me feel like I'm not alone.
02:29And that's kind of the power of music is like you just make the world a little bit smaller through
02:33shared experiences.
02:34So speaking of live music too, there's, you know, everyone's here at CMA Fest to watch you perform, watch other
02:40country music people perform.
02:41Is there any tickets you've bought for this summer that you're excited for?
02:44Yes. I am going to a festival for Castle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, because I really want to see Arcade
02:51Fire and I'm finally going to get to see them.
02:54Amazing. I love it. OK, so actually, before I let you go, one last question is our young audience is
03:01millennials and primarily millennial women.
03:03What's your one piece of advice that has stuck with you that you wish every woman could hear?
03:09It's advice from my dad, actually. He said he asked me how my career was going when I was on
03:15tour with him.
03:16And I jokingly said, oh, it's great. I'm going to be a superstar, like jokingly said.
03:21And he just got really serious and looked me dead in the eye and he said, be a super person
03:24and the superstar will follow.
03:27Ashley, that was great. Thank you so much. Thank you for being here.
03:29It was so great talking with you for having me. And I hope you have the best time this weekend.
03:33Thank you. Bye, guys. We'll see you next time.
03:38Bye.
