00:00How do you feel, Caroline?
00:01I feel pretty ethereal.
00:05This is my Met Gala look.
00:07Hi, I'm Caroline, and this is Hair Me Out.
00:09So today, I'm going to be bleaching my hair,
00:11coloring it gray, and then putting rainbow tones in it.
00:14Like a mermaid.
00:16So I have dyed my hair before.
00:18I actually haven't had all black natural hair since sixth grade.
00:22In middle school, I went through like a scene phase.
00:25Eighth grade to high school, I had variations of like browns, blondes,
00:29but it wasn't until like senior year that I bleached at all.
00:32Having dyed hair became my thing,
00:35so much that I think I would feel like if I went back to black hair,
00:39that it would just make me very average again.
00:42Going back to this hair now, like I really love it,
00:45but I think having the bleach hair too is also a part of my personality
00:48and like my character, and I love both ways.
00:50Something that inspires me now to express myself through my hair
00:54is also seeing badass Asian femmes females doing cool hair
00:58like CL, Suju Park, and Yoon Ambush.
01:01They all have cool blonde hair,
01:03and I think it makes them look amazing and powerful.
01:05I've never done this sort of rainbow tones in my hair,
01:09so I think that's going to be really exciting.
01:10I want to live my best rainbow mermaid life.
01:15All right, so we've already cut your hair.
01:18Are you ready for your color transformation?
01:19I'm trying to find out.
01:38I think I started coloring my hair and dyeing it because it was fun for me.
01:43It was a form of self-expression.
01:45My parents really weren't the type to not let me dye my hair like that,
01:49but I think it became a lot more of like an identity thing
01:51because I wanted to stand out.
01:53A lot of people knew me for that hair.
01:55I'm like, oh, the girl with the pink hair,
01:57like the girl with all the blonde hair.
02:16Ooh.
02:19He's so blonde.
02:21That's crazy.
02:38How I looked and how I appeared,
02:40it was something for me to sort of stand out,
02:42and I think those types of things are important to like express yourself,
02:46but also at the same time,
02:47I think we fall into these holes where you think that
02:49you don't want to be just another Asian.
02:51So it becomes a thing to sort of differentiate yourself
02:53from the rest of the crowd.
02:55My non-Asian friends would be like,
02:57oh, you're like a cool Asian.
02:59That's a really shitty thing to do to put people into uncool, cool categories.
03:03That made me feel like my personality wasn't enough.
03:14I think I've gone over that fear.
03:17My exterior appearance isn't all of me.
03:20Who I am and what people know me as is just like who I am
03:23and my personality and not just like my hair.
03:54The purple roots look so cool.
03:56They look good, right?
04:29I like to dye my hair now because it for me is a form of self-expression.
04:34I think it gives me a sense of confidence too,
04:36because I love how it looks and I feel great about myself.
04:39I am someone that likes to change things up, switch it up,
04:43whether it's through my clothing, makeup, and also my hair.
04:49Alright, are you ready to see your final look?
04:51I'm ready!
04:52Okay!
04:55Oh my gosh!
04:57It looks so good!
05:00Thank you so much.
05:02You're a perfect muted mermaid.
05:13It looks amazing.
05:14I think all the time spent in the salon was so worth it.
05:19I'm so inspired to try everything now.
05:21I think I can do anything.
05:22And pick up in your tent to try but you know what we want.
05:22It's not my turn!
05:22We don't have to do anything.
05:23I like me.
05:24It's not my turn.
05:26It's not my turn, it's not my turn!
05:26I'm so excited.
05:26It's not my turn.
05:28It's no longer turn!
05:28It's not my turn.
