00:22LASIK
00:24It really is a ten minute procedure that's done with outcomes that are immediate and miraculous.
00:32My name is Emily Colorado, I'm 33 and I'm getting LASIK eye surgery done today.
00:37I'm nearsighted so I can't see far and I also have an astigmatism which means that the curvature of my
00:44cornea is a little bit off.
00:45I have been wearing glasses since about junior high.
00:48I'm an emergency room nurse, I work 12 plus hours each shift so wearing contacts if I'm at work definitely
00:56is a strain on my eyes.
00:59They're definitely more dry at the end of the day.
01:01I have been considering laces for a very long time.
01:05I just didn't really look into initially because of the fear of having surgery.
01:10Having the surgery done, I don't have to worry about the stress of wearing contacts or glasses.
01:20My name is Netta Shami, I'm an ophthalmologist at the Maloney Shami Vision Institute in Los Angeles.
01:27I've done more than 6,000 vision correction surgeries.
01:31Hi, I'm right just going with me.
01:35There's no turning back.
01:38We go through the process of checking the vision.
01:43We then do some measurements to make sure that there's enough thickness for us to be able to remodel or
01:49reshape or sculpt the cornea to be able to correct the vision.
01:52I'm being consistent with the measurements that we got the other day.
01:58I'm super nervous.
02:00You good? Any questions?
02:01I'm still letting the volume dissolve.
02:03Okay, good.
02:04We're almost there.
02:05You're going to calm down a little bit and relax.
02:08You're okay?
02:08Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. I feel good.
02:10The fact of knowing that I was going to be awake, I think that definitely made me feel more anxious
02:14and more nervous going into the procedure.
02:17The patient is escorted to the laser suite.
02:21Okay, should I speak back now?
02:22And so you took towards me, please.
02:24We then prep the eye.
02:38I place a suction ring or stabilization ring onto the eye.
02:43I rotate the bed and the patient's eye under the femtosecond laser, which is an ultra-precise laser used to
02:52create the LASIK image.
02:53It's a big flap.
03:00She will then feel a slight bit of pressure during this step of the surgery.
03:16For the second part of the surgery, I place a speculum to keep the eyelids open while we're reshaping the
03:22cornea.
03:36I then fold the flap back onto the corneal surface.
03:40Oh my God.
03:40I'm so nervous.
03:45I'm so nervous.
04:09We're almost done, sweetie.
04:14Emily will hear clicking sound while the laser reshaping is occurring.
04:19The laser whacks the people in a three-dimensional fashion.
04:23Any sudden movements or large movements actually shuts down the laser or shuts down the treatment.
04:30And then dry the edges to ensure that, in fact, the flap is well-positioned back in place.
04:45I already see them.
04:47It's gonna be like looking through like, you know, old contact lenses.
04:52That was a little scary.
04:53That was a little scary.
04:54That was a little scary.
04:55This is such a big deal for me right here.
04:57I can see the time for my bed.
05:00I was never able to see that.
05:03And it's not even really that far.
05:05And it doesn't seem like an ideal, but I can actually see them.
05:08It's so cool.
05:10No glasses.
05:12Looking at the time on my bed.
05:17So it's been five days since I've had the LASIK eye surgery and I'm so glad I did it.
05:23I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner.
05:24Just like everybody else says, I definitely don't regret it at all.
05:28I was shocked at how quick it was.
05:30And I mean, each eye is done one at a time, of course.
05:33And I was like, what?
05:34We're done with the first eye.
05:37So after the procedure, my vision was still a little blurry, which is totally normal.
05:41It's expected that your eyes are still trying to get into focus.
05:45They have you wear these goggles after.
05:48They're kind of funny looking, but it's just to prevent you from touching your eyes at night
05:52and so you don't rub them.
05:53Oh, these are pretty stylish.
05:55They are stylish. Did you get it?
05:57Patients can go back to work.
05:58They can drive.
05:59They can really get back to their life with excellent vision.
06:02With Emily, her vision was 20-20 the next day and she was happy as can be.
06:06She did share that her eyes felt a little dry, which is quite typical.
06:10The next day after surgery and tends to resolve over about a week.
06:15It's so nice and refreshing to not have to worry about, for one, waking up in the morning,
06:19putting your contacts on.
06:21And the fact that I'm 33 now, I'm able to see like normal people.
06:25And it's been, what, over 20 years that I've been dealing with poor vision.
06:29The fact that I'm like here now and able to see normal and clear, it's amazing.
06:34I'm so glad that I did this procedure.
06:37I don't even know what it's like.
06:38I'm like, what is it like to see normal?
06:41The truth of the matter is, LASIK is one of the safest procedures done in medicine.
06:45So I would say, if you want to get out of your glasses or contact lenses,
06:50consider LASIK and go in for a consultation with an expert.
06:53My favorite part about my job is the human connections I make with my patients.
06:58It is a privilege and I'm happy that they trust their care to me.
07:04I'm happy to see them all.
07:05I've seen a lot of people, but I have to go out of your knowledge.
