00:00So if you're watching this video and you have hair like this, you let it air dry and you're like,
00:04worry not my friend. We can make this look like something. I'm David Lopez and I'm going to do
00:09an enhanced, naturally wavy hair transformation. So I originally came to New York City to be an
00:14actor and I got tired of bartending. LOL. So I went to beauty school and it was a really crazy
00:21journey. It was a struggle, especially getting celebrity hair. I assisted. I was sleeping on
00:25couches for the better part of a year and you know what? I made that dream come true. Now I
00:29work with
00:29like Ashley Graham, Hailey Bieber. It's been a really fun ride. So the hair transformation
00:34we have chosen today is an enhanced, naturally wavy routine. Let's take it with language. We're
00:40not trying to control. We're trying to enhance. It's really about embracing whatever texture already
00:44lives on your hair and we're going to enhance it with some techniques and products and maybe
00:49a hair extension or two. Okay. So before we get started, I'm going to go ahead and put on
00:56this hair that needs a little bit of enhancing and then we're going to get started on our enhanced
01:03wavy transformation. BRB. And we're back with long hair that needs some help. So the first thing I'm
01:13going to do is go ahead and wet this hair. I just wanted you to see the texture before so
01:17you can
01:17kind of recognize what it looks like. And I'm going to go ahead and pretend that I showered. So I'm
01:24going to
01:24get this hair really nice and wet because that is where this starts. And how you detangle in the
01:29shower, that's going to set you up for success. Rinse your conditioner. Use a wide tooth comb. I'll be
01:34right back. Okay. So we are back from our shower. What I'm going to do is apply a cream. I
01:41suggest
01:41creams for hair like this that tend to have a little frizz and I'm going to squeeze just a nice
01:46amount
01:47into the palm of my hand. And here's what I want to do for even product distribution. I'm going to
01:51glide
01:52over the surface. Glide like this and then squeeze in. Squeeze in. Just want to make sure you really
01:59squeeze. You want to hear that little bit of a scrunch in there. Give your head a shake. Detractive.
02:05And keep squeezing that product in.
02:11While the hair is still wet like this, take a detangling brush or a paddle brush or a vent brush
02:16like this with the product in it. Evenly distribute. If you see frizz when it's wet, you're going to see
02:22frizz when it's dry. Remember that. I discovered my passion for hair. God, I feel like I was born with
02:28the passion for hair. I have very vivid memories of instantly being obsessed with My Little Ponies,
02:33except I would hold them backwards and play with the ponytail instead of the actual My Little Pony.
02:38And then that transformed into doing my mom's hair, doing my sister's hair. I'm Puerto Rican.
02:42It's a part of our culture to be obsessed with beauty in general. It's been a point of contention
02:47because I always struggle with my own hair, but also to express myself and bring confidence to others.
02:55Now to really amp it up, we're going to take a microfiber towel and I'm just going to
03:02lean over like this and really give that hair a squeeze. Just like that.
03:07Regular cotton towels, terry cloth towels, they catch on those little frizzy hairs that happen
03:13around what I call the halo of your head. So once you catch those, it's kind of hard to go
03:17back from
03:17there. So microfiber towel is just a much smoother surface for the hair to not catch onto. It's all
03:23about just encouraging. You kind of want to have it remember what it's meant to do. I do want to
03:28get a
03:28little bit of height here at my roots. So what I'm going to do is take these creaseless clips,
03:34put the clip in so it holds up that lip there. I'm just kind of pinching up, grabbing and sliding
03:42in.
03:42These creaseless clips are so helpful for so many things. Okay, so now that we have the clips in,
03:48holding it in place, you can do a couple of things. If you're home and you're not going anywhere,
03:51you can just let your hair air dry, but no touching, no touching while it's drying.
03:54Or alternatively, you can use your dryer and your diffuser. So this is the T3 Micro Cura with a
04:01diffuser attachment. What you're going to do is start encouraging frizz. Look how much curls
04:04already happening. Oh my god! Use your diffuser to mimic air drying. So just hold it around like this.
04:12Once it's about like 60 to 70% dry, you can start encouraging the pattern. But
04:16let's go ahead, turn on the diffuser and get started.
04:24So now that it's pretty dry, what you're going to feel, depending on what kind of product you use,
04:29you'll feel what I call a product cast, meaning that you'll feel like maybe a little bit of crispiness.
04:33That's okay. You want that. But now what I'm going to do is take the diffuser,
04:37I'm going to start scrunching and encouraging that wave pattern even more.
04:41One thing that I am going to do with the dryer is turn the speed down. Keep the heat the
04:45same,
04:45but just turn the speed down so there's not as much airflow flowing out of the diffuser.
04:50Again, I don't want to encourage frizz, I just want to dry it. Notice how I'm not touching the hair
04:55a lot as it's drying. One of the keys to this look is that it stays purposeful. If you start
04:59messing
04:59with it too much and you start kind of scrunching it as it's drying, you're going to break up that
05:03product cast and then you're going to get that frizzy halo effect, which it ain't cute. It looks like
05:07you just didn't know how you were doing your hair that day. While everyone's been at home,
05:12I've gotten a ton of questions on social media about, you know, I want to have a change and I
05:16get
05:16the mentality of wanting to do that, but my number one advice for anyone wanting to do a big hair
05:21change at home during this time is to not. Please don't. You're going to create a lot of mess for
05:28your stylist that is patiently waiting for you. Just keep up with the hair treatments, learn some new
05:33styles, perfect any sort of styling techniques that you kind of always struggled with. Like you can
05:38master your curling iron, master your flyer, master an updo, master ponytails. You can really
05:42master a lot of fun styles while you are at home. I cannot believe how much curl I'm getting.
05:49This is what I'm always telling you guys. Whenever you tell me my hair doesn't curl,
05:52it's just frizzy. I'm like, listen, frizz is just a curl or a wave waiting to happen. So
05:57living proof right here. Okay. So my hair is mostly dry now. What I'm going to do is go ahead
06:01and take
06:01out these clips, let these sections start to relax a little bit. It's a little bit damp here in the
06:07root.
06:07So what I'm going to do is pick up the hair like this very gently and then use my diffuser
06:12to keep drying the roots.
06:15Hair to me, it's everything from self-expression, artistic expression to a political statement.
06:21It's confidence. We are in the business of giving people confidence. And when you have confidence,
06:25you're better able to communicate your thoughts, your ideas and your feelings. People immediately assume
06:31that hair is such a, you know, it's just hair, it's just beauty, but it's so much more. It really
06:35does
06:35hold so much depth and meaning for so many people. And so I'm just so lucky and so proud to
06:40work with
06:40this industry every single day. As if it couldn't get any better, I got another trick up my sleeve.
06:47So if you are that person that has clipping hair extensions sitting in your closet, looking crusty and
06:52dusty, pull them out, girl. You don't need your clipping hair extensions just to make your hair long.
06:56You can actually utilize your natural wave of your clipping extensions. These are amazing,
07:02amazing clipping extensions. They have really thin little wefts that you can see look just like that.
07:09And the wave pattern is amazing and the quality of the hair is incredible. So let's go ahead and put
07:13these in right now. You're going to have your base one, which is a base of three. And what I'm
07:19going to do
07:20is just separate from behind my ear, and then I'm going to go from just under the top of my
07:27ear,
07:28and I'm going to connect the two pieces together in the back, and I'm going to lift gently this hair
07:34away. Typically what I would do if it was straight, I would tease it, but because this hair has texture
07:39in it, I don't need to do that. I'm going to put that clip in right in the center. Bam,
07:44bam, boom.
07:44Now the next section up, just above that, we're going to go, you feel the top of your ear,
07:50you feel that clip. You're going to go about two finger widths up from there, connect on either side.
07:56Another thing you can do too, which I love to do on my clients, like especially with Ashley Graham,
08:01we put in the extensions first, and then we do this whole thing so that the extensions really start to
08:07twist and blend in with your own hair. Perfect. And then the next one is going to be a five
08:14piece.
08:15It's going to go across the widest part of your head, like this. So we're going to go right there
08:21to that big wide part where the head jumps up the most. So what I like to do on the
08:26sides is I will
08:28actually put in the extensions in at an angle. It just blends so much better. So it's going to go
08:33right from the temple straight back to the top of my ear. Perfect.
08:40Draw it back. Then last piece to really connect this front framing pieces, we're going to put
08:45right in here, just like that. To get the hair to blend a little bit more, even though it already
08:51has a natural texture, I'm going to spray a spray called Sugar Beach Spray. It's a texturizing spray.
08:56I'm going to just spray it onto my hair and then I'm going to start scrunching that into the end.
09:03So
09:03those ends start playing together. Now with our diffuser, we're going to keep on drying.
09:12So you see how it looks like you can see a little bit crispy? I don't want to see that.
09:15I don't want
09:171999 crispy curls. I want 2020 soft waves. So when you want to break up that product cast,
09:23come from underneath and there's still a little bit of dampness here. I'm going to squeeze out,
09:27make sure it completely dries. I'm just going to keep squeezing and enhancing, breaking up that cast
09:34because I want as much volume. Oh my God, is this not? Once you have finished your style,
09:39you can take a nice lightweight hair oil. I'm going to put about like two or three pumps,
09:43not much, just in this crown to make sure we keep that definition. Any sort of frizzy pieces,
09:49just run your fingers over. Oh my God. You guys are going to die. Oh my God.
10:04This is my actual dream hair and it is as easy as I thought. Remember what I said,
10:10frizz is just a curl waiting to happen. So if you think that your hair can't do this,
10:14trust and believe baby, because there are no straight lines in nature. All hair has some type of body,
10:18some type of movement to it. So see what your hair can do. Use some of these techniques,
10:23use some of these tips and tricks because I feel amazing. You can't tell me nothing.
10:27And thank you so much for watching. I hope that you're well wherever you are
10:31and that you found some sort of tip or trick in this video that's going to make you feel good,
10:36bring that confidence up. I believe in you. Make sure you tag me in your recreations.
