Perhaps no hairstyle has been in heavier rotation for us this summer than the braid. Whether it was a fishtail to spice up a boring ponytail or a crown braid to get our bangs off our faces, by now, we‘ve become pros at executing all types of plaits. Except, that is, for one: the undone, braided updo. It's hard enough braiding the back of your head as it is, but trying to tackle a loose, messy iteration of a plait back there is nearly impossible. It either looks like a complete disaster or the hair just keeps falling out.

To give us a hand with the style, we called on hair pro Adam Maclay to create an updo that's chic, without being too structured. By combining different braids, Adam transforms account manager Kellie Matzen‘s long, red locks into a textured, romantic bun that looks amazing from the front and back. Check it out to learn his weaving tricks.

00:10I'm looking for a way to keep my hair up without it looking too messy or too done.
00:14I'm hoping Adam can teach me how.
00:15Alright, so Kelly, what's your biggest fear with the messy braid?
00:18It's just so hard for me to make the back look good because I can't see what's going on.
00:23Totally understandable.
00:24You know, a lot of people have issues with seeing behind their head.
00:26Obviously, we don't have eyes back there, so let's work with different types of braids.
00:30We're going to create texture.
00:31This is about movement and fluidity, so it'll be really organic and fun.
00:34So, let's get this started, okay?
00:36Great.
00:36So, we're going to use the Chlorine Dry Shampoo to help build texture in the hair.
00:40It helps absorb a lot of that oil in there.
00:43Up next is the Tony and Guy Sea Salt Spray.
00:45This will really just help add that beach texture.
00:47That salt factor will really help mattify that hair.
00:50And to finish this look, we're going to use the Osses Dusted Powder
00:53just to really create that extra texture and volume in the hair that we need.
00:57Alright, so I'm just taking a subsection right now and pinning part of this hair up.
01:01Again, she's got a lot of hair, so we just want to make sure
01:03every braid has a different density and texture to it.
01:07So, I'm just using a standard three-part braid right now.
01:10It'll be about how you mess it up.
01:12So, you can apply your elastic band at the end, and then we'll start to pull the braid apart
01:16to create that texture.
01:18Now, as we move around to the front, we want to create some visual interest.
01:21I'm not just going to slick her hair back.
01:22So, just for a little changeup, I'm going to do a little fishtail action on her here.
01:26I'm doing this a lot looser so that you can have more of a texture to it
01:30rather than that tight, tight braid that we typically see with a fishtail.
01:34We have all these amazing braids, so now we get to compile this amazing chignon slash nest.
01:39So, I'm just going to go ahead and take bobby pins and hairpins both,
01:42and I'm just going to start pinning this together and pulling it apart
01:45to create interesting texture.
01:47It's all about your foundation, so make sure you lock these braids in place
01:50with your bobby pins.
01:52Again, remember, this is romantic, so you can pull out a couple of wispy pieces, too,
01:57and let this be fun.
01:58It doesn't all have to be this pulled up look.
02:00So, again, now we're at this point.
02:02I'm just going to use a little bit more volumizing powder just to create that extra texture up on top.
02:07Everybody, don't be afraid to try this at home.
02:09It's braid variations.
02:10It's texture.
02:11Create this romantic look for yourself at home.
