00:01are you watching more less or the same college football rankings for the playoff came out last
00:07night it's rivalry week in the state yet 71 percent responded to my twitter poll and said
00:12we're watching less of this man just doesn't feel like the same juice and you tell us what is it
00:17for
00:17you 248-539-9797 let's go to philip you're on 97.1 good morning guys how you doing heather
00:26and everybody behind the glass so in reference to what you guys were speaking about earlier
00:34in reference to the playoff this is my this is my thought my theory on the whole thing and i
00:40don't
00:40really care for the fact that they're going for 24 teams but if they're going to do it then this
00:45is
00:45what needs to happen and this is my thought and my vision for if they're going to go to the
00:502014
00:51playoff we got to do away with the cupcake games there are no more cupcake games there are more
00:56no more tune-up games you come into the season there should be ranked games or ranked games early
01:03in the season uh you understand what i'm saying yep so because like to your point jim jim you said
01:10there's going to be some two three and possibly a 14 loss well okay if that's the case if those
01:17type of teams are going to get in then alabama needs to be playing someone like georgia tech early
01:22or whoever it is early you know what i'm saying yeah no more of this playing eastern no more of
01:27this playing coastal carolina and all this other stuff that's out the window if you want to play
01:32a team like that then you schedule a scrimmage uh prior to the season like that i mean because
01:37the nfl has preseason so you figure out some kind of way to schedule a scrimmage against or whatever
01:42a weaker opponent philip in theory in theory that should happen right because i can afford to lose
01:48those games more now than ever before so and but in practice in reality i john i don't know do
01:55you
01:55think we see more of those games i do know that okay the sec went to 19 you know a
01:59nine game conference
02:01schedule the big 10's been there for a while and so you are normalizing things across the board in
02:06regards to that i do believe that if the 24 team or when the 24 team playoff is put in
02:11place
02:11you are going to be required as a power four team to play one other power four team so you're
02:16going
02:16to have 10 the two cupcake games and you could say they're preseason games right now they count
02:24towards your record no one's really looking at those games as boosting your playoff resume or
02:31taking away from the resume um i mean they could take away obviously don't lose yeah just don't
02:36lose but it's also for those programs like that's what keeps them afloat oh trust me school like
02:41central right they want to have those games so that you can you can make a you know on one
02:47day you
02:47might go in knowing you're going to lose but it's what four million bucks a check that's written to
02:53a central or western or some of these programs yeah to your point nine now is common in the sec
03:00it's
03:00the standard and many of them have in-state games that that make up their 10th power opponent so i
03:06think of like south carolina clemson georgia georgia tech florida florida state and the list goes on now
03:11alabama doesn't have a natural one but they've especially under saban scheduled somebody if
03:16no early in the season yeah if everybody's playing 10 power opponents you're going to get better games
03:22yeah um so but it really comes down to then i mean some of the cupcake games that you play
03:28are
03:29actually in your conference sometimes yeah because it's bloated right yeah these these super conferences
03:34yeah you got 18 teams and i mean you're going to have to play maryland you have to play rutgers
03:40michigan state you went there not me two four well they're one in 14 in their last 15 big 10
03:48games
03:49they are by definition one of those teams that you know patsy you beat them and what does it really
03:53do for you uh are you watching more or less alex in ann arbor alex good morning hey jim how's
03:59it going
03:59good yeah if i'm gonna spend time watching football these days i'm i'm gonna do it on sundays and it's
04:06unfortunate but but saturdays are just tough you you see game day is not the product what it was
04:11you see articles coming out about that and then even being a michigan fan if i want to turn on
04:16a big
04:16michigan game it's going to be on big noon kickoff and it's going to take four hours and it just
04:21feels like every big game takes four hours and it it the commercial spamming is is ridiculous out
04:27of control it's just a bad product right now games are taking a long time yeah
04:34to your point it's it's the um what is it that you score a touchdown they go to commercial
04:40yeah they come out they kick the ball off go to commercial then they go to commercial
04:44you're like i've watched more commercials in football right it is um and i mean games are
04:52taking longer than they've ever taken and they've tried to speed it up because clock doesn't stop now
04:57on first downs unless it's the last two minutes of the game like they've tried to make it more nfl
05:02like but i mean do nfl games take any less than college games i haven't seen the numbers i'd assume
05:09they're about the same they're about the same yeah but the product that you're watching
05:12is very different right tom you're next you're on 97.1 thank you so i'm a first time caller
05:21and i agree with the previous caller um regarding michigan football i i have like maize in blue blood
05:30from i mean let's just say this i'll tell you my grandfather attended the first game ever played
05:36at the big house in 1927 and it's trickled down through the relation all the way and we're just
05:41huge michigan fans but this year when i turned on that first game and find out that we're literally
05:47losing and did lose essentially to western michigan i knew it was going to be rich rod too all over
05:54again
05:54and and it kind of has turned out that way i mean to to feel you have an accomplishment because
06:00you've
06:01beat the rutgers come on is that how low we've gotten no kidding anyway i just um i just am
06:08disappointed and so i'm watching less i everything revolves around how it affects michigan and right
06:14now it doesn't seem to matter it doesn't no you're right about it i mean they're going to fight to
06:19get
06:19to a bowl game yeah whatever that means in today's college football um no i think a lot of things
06:25start
06:25to add up but we're getting a variety of answers right it's sure it's certainly weighed down by our local
06:29teams not holding up their end of the bargain it's the roster continuity or lack thereof with
06:35the free movement which you like on surface but in practice it's really made it hard to buy in year
06:41over year some people are turned off by players getting paid i'm not but i understand that's a
06:46turnoff for people sure it doesn't bother me when i watch the lions get paid it doesn't bother me that
06:49that you know college players get paid but it does bother some the 2014 playoff which hasn't even taken
06:55foothold is a huge turnoff for people the watering down of the regular season over years i mean we
07:00blew through some yield signs the bcs wasn't good people complained 14 wasn't good enough people
07:07complained did we stop at six or eight no not 12 and then we didn't even digest 12 no and
07:12we're up to
07:1324 so it's a little bit of everything but it does show up in people's decisions of am i going
07:19to sit
07:19down for now four hours to watch this for what to see if michigan can beat rutgers right to see
07:24if
07:25state can win a big 10 game to see to see what you know we got a texter that says
07:29lsu alabama used to
07:31be appointment football they're gonna play this weekend you may have it on you may not right well
07:40it was a knockout game because they were both in the west except for that one year and this was
07:43pre
07:43playoff that alabama earned their way back in to the national championship game you had the game nobody
07:49wanted to see the rematch yeah exactly uh my problem with college football has been going for years
07:55but it's i just think the product's mediocre and that nil has done that there's just no continuity
08:00uh i don't think we get very many 2021 michigan michigan state games anymore where there's this is a
08:08pretty powerhouse matchup you've got like loaded teams to a degree playing against each other those
08:15are both two very good teams that year you know uh and there was only like one major transfer portal
08:20player in that game and it was kenneth walker right that was kind of the start of this i mean
08:26that i just
08:27don't feel like i get games that often like that anymore like even the close games have felt
08:34like not like we're watching the battle of titans you're like some of the close games i'm thinking
08:39like this last week at indiana played a close game did it feel like you were watching heavyweights
08:43trade blows you're like it's survival right you know it's it's just not as good of a product
08:48because he's continuity so important in football and it's lacking in college football yeah let's get
08:54to mike you're next year on 97.1 hey good morning guys love the show hey i think you guys
09:00are both
09:00right but we're missing one key point continuity for sure right how many people are going to go to
09:04michigan and play ohio state as many times as john jansen did over the next 10 years right there's too
09:09much movement um and you and because you were right on to the watering down but let's not
09:15let's not just leave college football alone right you can't watch tigers baseball the nba gets so many
09:24days of rest because of the watering down that's why i don't want to see the nfl go to 18
09:2920 games
09:30i remember when michigan notre dame week two meant something somebody was no longer going to have a
09:36chance to play for the natty week two that mattered now it's all it's all gone right there's no there's
09:43no rivalries it's all just a big money circus mike of folks and hoes
09:53it's really well done mike do you remember like you mentioned notre dame and michigan
09:58that the we hadn't even had a crisp in the year and you felt like your season was on the
10:02brink do you
10:02remember it was the year that tebow and the gators lost to old miss and he gave that impassioned speech
10:07in the locker room no team was going to play harder because they knew they were fighting for their lives
10:11after one loss and a lot of those guys had been in the locker room with him for multiple years
10:17right
10:17they knew they knew he meant something right he was putting that on his shoulders because he had
10:23heart and he believed in the university he he loved where he went he loved the whole competition
10:29now it's like i love it if you give me a little bit of raise but if you don't they
10:34will
10:35yeah no that's the thing man it's the year to year and coaches have talked about this you know the
10:41exit
10:41meetings right it's how much players come in and go how much more am i going to get
10:48arms are out and then i got someone working the phones to see what the other schools are going to
10:53offer to it's never-ending free agency and some of that's fun um like in pro sports we get excited
11:01to see what big free agents our school our team is going to land and now it's our schools and
11:05it's
11:05just upheaval well but it's also it's it's fun because you get fresh talent but then okay like
11:12rick woolen goes to philly any signs a one-year deal okay your expectations are he's gonna be there
11:16for one year then he's gonna test the market he could be somewhere else and if you your season
11:20goes bad you trade him but if you sign a guy to a three or a four or a five
11:25-year contract
11:27now you feel like you can go out and buy a jersey you can go out and invest in the
11:32individual
11:34because they're going to be invested in your team unless they ask to be traded midway through an
11:38eight-year contract right what's the dylan doe up to now uh it is hold on marked i do but
11:45i'm trying
11:46to figure out okay here it is dylan doe 261 555 dollars six seven eight unbelievable it's 97 one
