00:07 Any update we get on Florida sports betting
00:10 is one that no one understands.
00:12 I think that's the fair assessment of this.
00:15 But let me try, and I'll probably get it wrong,
00:17 but I'm gonna try.
00:18 It looks like the Supreme Court,
00:20 meaning the United States Supreme Court,
00:22 John Roberts, one of the justices,
00:25 is going to review the idea
00:29 that the Seminole Tribe can allow them,
00:33 can be allowed to just relaunch their sports betting app
00:36 and operate sports betting as the only operators
00:39 in the state of Florida.
00:41 I saw that for the 18th of October,
00:43 which is soon, next week.
00:45 Some people feel that this is just more red tape
00:49 before this actually happens sometime next year.
00:51 There are others that feel
00:52 that this is actually a critical moment,
00:55 that if Roberts says the Supreme Court
00:57 is not gonna hear it,
00:58 and the Seminole Tribe can operate,
01:01 that could be the moment
01:02 that sports betting comes back to Florida.
01:05 Now, correct me on all this stuff.
01:06 I'm sure I'm wrong.
01:08 - You know what, Craigie?
01:09 You got it pretty good in a nutshell there.
01:11 This is one of the updates on Florida
01:14 that is actually,
01:16 it's something you can wrap your head around, right?
01:19 So basically what happened was,
01:22 on October 6th, West Flagler,
01:27 they are the people suing
01:28 to keep sports betting out of Florida right now,
01:30 only in the hands of the Seminole, I should say.
01:33 They petitioned the US Supreme Court for the stay.
01:38 We've been talking about it for a while,
01:39 that they likely would go to the Supreme Court
01:42 and ask for a stay.
01:44 What's gonna come of that
01:45 is what we've all been wondering about,
01:47 but it is really interesting to see
01:49 because when the stay was put in,
01:52 they had 45 days, basically,
01:55 for a response from the feds,
01:57 and then the Supreme Court would get to it
02:00 when it got to it, right?
02:02 Now that this is actually getting some attention
02:05 from the court, it's really interesting.
02:07 And you get that response time cut down to a week.
02:11 So the feds are working on the response right now.
02:14 We will hear why they think
02:17 there's no reason to hold up sports betting,
02:21 and not necessarily, that won't be their words.
02:23 Their words will be, this is why the ruling
02:26 from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals should stand.
02:30 And you know what, Craig?
02:34 I don't know what happens if Chief Justice John Roberts,
02:39 or the court comes back and says,
02:41 where there is no stay in place,
02:44 you can do what you want,
02:45 because they also have the case in the Florida Supreme Court,
02:49 which is where it looks like now that
02:52 it seems like they're kind of out of options
02:53 on the federal level, going forward in the Florida courts
02:58 and saying, using the defense that,
03:00 well, in order to expand gambling in Florida,
03:04 you need a referendum, and it needs to be supported
03:06 by 60% of Florida residents.
03:09 And obviously, that is not what happened here.
03:12 And so that's gonna be the argument
03:14 in the Florida Supreme Court.
03:15 Like, I look at how they're just expanding gambling
03:18 without people giving the okay.
03:22 And so the question comes, if this stay is not granted,
03:27 does Hard Rock Bet launch again?
03:31 And it gets back to the question that we've talked about
03:35 of do they really want to risk having to pull it down again?
03:40 You know, that would sting for the brand, to say the least,
03:44 if people had to go get their money out again
03:47 and just be throwing their hands up,
03:49 like, what's happening?
03:51 I don't know that I want to bet with Hard Rock Bet
03:52 when it comes back.
03:53 You know, those are things that you have to think about.
03:56 And, but you also have to think about being allowed
04:00 to launch sports betting and get it up and running.
04:04 And then once it is up and running,
04:06 if the numbers are great, if everything's going well,
04:08 you can come back and say, look,
04:09 people want this, obviously, you know?
04:12 So this is definitely a big moment for the case right here.
04:16 This is a moment that I don't know that we saw
04:18 coming, I don't know that we expected the Supreme Court,
04:22 the US Supreme Court, to pay attention as quickly as it did.
04:26 So next week, you know, could be a great week
04:31 for Florida sports betting.
04:32 Could be an awful week for Florida sports betting
04:34 if this stay is left in place until the court decides
04:38 to hear the case.
04:39 So we're, you know, but Florida is always a wait and see moment
04:43 at the end of the day,
04:44 but we're not going to wait that long now.
