00:00it's time for the Daily Bases.
00:03Craig, you know what time it is right now as we go all around all four of those bags.
00:09It's time for the Daily Bases.
00:16So we start with the National League Cy Young race.
00:20Chris Sale yesterday, solid outing for Atlanta.
00:23Did not earn the win, but the Braves took the rubber match and the series from the Milwaukee
00:27Brewers six to two.
00:29Chris Sale right now in his debut season in Atlanta, minus 110, a slight odds on favorite
00:36in minus money to win the National League Cy Young Award.
00:39Paul Skeens, not all that far behind.
00:41Zach Wheeler, third best number at plus 270.
00:44Craig, how competitive is the race over these final two months of the regular season going
00:49to be for that NL Cy Young hardware?
00:52Yeah, I think it's going to be right down to the wire with this one.
00:56As we talked about last week on the show, I was skeptical a month ago that Paul Skeens
01:01could potentially win rookie of the year and Cy Young, but he is very much in the mix.
01:05What it feels like is that after every pitching performance that one of these guys has, the
01:10odds change significantly.
01:12And I would say the one name on that list that we need to really pay closer attention
01:18to at this point.
01:19And even though he's probably fourth in the running, and I think it's appropriately that
01:23FanDuel has it, I'm not sure that the pricing is.
01:25And that's Dylan Cease.
01:26I mean, let's just call it what it is.
01:28The Padres are playing great baseball.
01:29They've upgraded their bullpen.
01:32Wins are going to come more frequently, I think, for him.
01:34So while I do think it is appropriate that the three names that you see there on your
01:38screen are ahead of him, I got to make this a four-player race at this point.
01:41I got Cease in the mix.
01:43Yeah, it's fantastic to watch it come down the stretch here, Craig, particularly to see
01:47how the, I guess, voters deem Paul Skeens.
01:49Because if he's phenomenal down the stretch, it's hard to deny him.
01:52But I wonder if there's going to be some detractors that'll say, well, he didn't pitch
01:55the full season, and a couple other guys did.
01:57So certainly something to watch.
01:58One of those guys that we usually see in the top four, top five in the SIU, and that's
02:02Clayton Kershaw.
02:03We had a streak come to an end yesterday, which I don't know how many people actually
02:06were paying attention to it.
02:07But when you see it, 423 regular season starts with at least one strikeout ended yesterday.
02:13423 for Kershaw, Tom Seaver with 411, and Nolan Ryan with 382.
02:18That is absolutely incredible for that streak to last that long.
02:22Yeah, and those other two guys, arguably two of the top five pitchers in the history of
02:28baseball, maybe even less than that.
02:30Kershaw is just not going to be who he was previously, and I think that he probably privately
02:36would acknowledge that.
02:38But that's not what the Dodgers are looking for.
02:40They're looking for throwing five innings, quality starts, and just basically starting
02:45one game in the postseason out of every five or every seven.
02:48So I think people just have to remember that Kershaw has been out for the majority of the
02:52season.
02:53I believe he's only made two starts or three, whatever that one was.
02:57Certainly he could pick things up as the season goes on, but Donnie, I just don't think you're
03:02going to see seven innings, 12 strikeouts from Kershaw again, like we did pretty consistently
03:06for about a decade.
03:09Year number 16 in Major League Baseball, all in Los Angeles, but how much juice is left
03:15in the tank?
03:16It might even be year 17.
03:18I've lost track at this point.
03:20What is 17, Craig?
03:22That's the amount of losses in a row for the Chicago White Sox.
03:26The franchise streak extends for Chicago.
03:29They dropped their 17th straight game yesterday at home to the Royals, losing big 10 to three.
03:36Now, the longest ever Major League Baseball losing streak happened way back in 1889.
03:41The Louisville Colonels lost 26 consecutive games, the longest losing streak since the
03:47year 1900.
03:48That was the Philz in 1961, losing 23 consecutive games, the longest losing skids in MLB in
03:56this millennium.
03:57Since the year 2000, two teams have dropped 19 games in a row.
04:01The Royals in 05, the Orioles back in 2021.
04:06Do the White Sox have a legitimate chance of making history in Major League Baseball?
04:11And that poor component may be matching the longest losing skid of 19 straight that we
04:15have seen since 2000?
04:19It's possible.
04:20It's possible.
04:21I mean, I remember when the, I think it was the 88 Orioles, Ben, opened up with, I don't
04:24know how many losses in a row to begin the season.
04:26To me, that's the one that sticks out the most.
04:29Yeah.
04:30So that season, I mean, imagine opening up a Major League Baseball season with your fans
04:33and losing the first 21 games of the year.
04:34I mean, that's just unheard of.
04:36Look, White Sox fans at this point, they kind of know what they're up against.
04:40They know the team is going to be bad for a long time.
04:42They certainly could keep losing.
04:44But the one thing that I see a lot, Ben, that I want to clarify here on social media
04:48and for everyone else, for people who say that the White Sox are tanking to get the
04:53number one overall pick in the draft, folks, they are not eligible to get the number one
04:57pick because under the new CBA rules, that market, the Chicago market is not eligible.
05:02I know it sounds crazy, but they're not losing on purpose.
05:06At the end of the season, if they have the worst record in baseball, the best they can
05:09draft I believe is 12th or 13th.
05:11So that is just not true.
05:12So stop with that.
05:14The worst pick is going to go to Colorado or Miami or one of those teams at the bottom
05:17there.
05:18Those teams are eligible.
05:19So if the White Sox keep losing, Ben, it is not because they're trying to.
05:23It's just because they stink.
05:24There's going to be massive changes going on there in the offseason.
05:27Pedro Griffo, a good guy without a doubt.
05:30He is in all likelihood not going to be.
05:32You can't lose this much and be the manager of a major league baseball team next season.
05:35So get ready for that coming in September.
05:37I don't even know that he'll make it through the year.
05:40Home runs.
05:41Maxson Holiday yesterday hit his first and which one?
05:44A grand slam and also that thing almost hit the warehouse at Camden Yards yesterday.
05:48Let me ask you this question, Craig.
05:49Holiday obviously the number one pick in 2022.
05:52Is he have a chance to make the postseason roster for the Orioles this season?
05:56Yes, and especially considering Jordan Westbrook got hurt yesterday and he's going to be out
06:00for an extended period of time.
06:02I think there's a chance Holiday almost hit a second home run, by the way, in that game.
06:05I'm so happy to see him performing well.
06:08You hate to see a 20-year-old kid thrust into the spotlight and struggle like he did initially.
06:11But now he's back.
06:12He'll be great.
06:13And guys will be talking about his brother, Ethan Holiday, very soon.
06:17Equivalent as far as talent, I mean, Matt Holiday.
06:21What do they got going on in Oklahoma?
06:23I don't know.
06:24Matt Holiday.
06:25Great stuff there.
06:26Good genes.
06:27Good genes for the Holiday family.
06:29There's no doubt about it.
06:30Craig Misch, we appreciate the time.
06:32We'll tune into Newswire starting at 11 a.m. Eastern time.
06:36See you tomorrow.
06:37No, I guess we'll probably see you next week.
06:39Under 30 and a half.
06:40Big driver.
06:41Under 30.
06:42Oh, Craig.
06:43Under 30 and a half.
