00:00hey welcome back to checkpoint esports and gaming radio got norris and i out at the national
00:10association of broadcasters the nab the nab i call it the nab at the las vegas convention center
00:16right here and of course beautiful las vegas nevada we're joined now by a brand new friend
00:22of the show he's a streamer for the detroit renegades we got niko vald how you doing man
00:26how's it going how's it been you enjoying vegas first time in vegas oh is it yeah the very first
00:33time in vegas very first welcome welcome welcome trying to figure out what to do yeah you asked
00:37any trouble you asked us last night if we all wanted to go out and get a drink and we were
00:41like in the middle of watching wrestlemania so we're like well hopefully he won't get in any
00:44trouble he'll be he'll be all right it's just vegas he can't get in any trouble here yeah so
00:48we were watching wrestlemania last night yeah big slam or something by shane is it uh yeah i mean
00:55he took he took a big spot uh against the miz he got slammed slammed off like a 20 i just know what
01:00i see on twitter i don't yeah 25 like scaffolding or something it was ridiculous but nico uh you know
01:06we got a lot of viewers here guys who are just now getting introduced to you so let them know what it
01:12is that you do and you know where can everybody find you um well you can find me on if you just type
01:19nico vald nico vald on youtube uh that's mostly where i am um i mostly just make videos on fortnite
01:26um some uh creative stuff just fortnite challenges just pretty much just having fun with the game
01:32and uh i have like a good group of friends that we record with and it's a lot of fun
01:36awesome see okay i'm gonna be honest with you nico we're old and tired okay so when fortnite come out
01:43you know came out it hit it hit it and everybody was so on it and we were just like no yeah but we
01:50were curmudgeons about it we were curmudgeons yes but we can't deny the skill involved in something
01:56like fortnite so you know when we talk about building we talk about you know fighting and
02:02building at the same time like just explain how difficult it is to get actually good at that game
02:08yeah well so i play on pc and mouse and really the only i used i was like a full console guy
02:14and then when fortnite actually released um like the fortnite battle royale it was uh it wasn't
02:21open to the public it wasn't free to play you had to buy the save the world right so they reached out
02:25to me they're like hey do you want to play the game but you have to play on pc and i was like
02:29okay i don't really know pc but sure yeah i'll try it out sure and then that i just learned that and
02:36yeah but fighting and building it seems so like it seems so obvious now but that was just brand new
02:43to battle royale and it makes it so like there's just so it's a lot it can be a lot faster obviously
02:49it can also be a lot slower because you can just hide right um but compared to like other games that
02:54like if you're if you're stuck somewhere if you're running across a field someone shoots at you
03:00you're just in trouble right but in fortnite you can run across anywhere and if someone shoots at you
03:05you can you can protect yourself yeah i mean that's the the joke you see uh i tried to take
03:11out this guy in fortnite he just exploded into a building effectively what what i mean like mentally
03:16is there is there a process to that like you have like your your rotation in your head for what how
03:21you're laying down things and building or is it just kind of like controlled chaos yeah no it looks
03:26like controlled chaos but it's like whenever i'm like because there's always like new techniques that
03:31people just figure out like you build like this and it's like i always like think about how when i
03:37put when i was like in my soccer team my coach is always like when you practice how you practice how
03:41you're going to play the game right and so like if you go into because they have like playgrounds and
03:45stuff if you go just like practice this a couple times then you'll just like second nature just do
03:50these things in normal fights um and see that's always been the question for me is like how much of a
03:55of a meta game is there in in fortnite right because obviously you have it with weapons different
04:00weapons have different strengths obviously but the building aspect always came to me like how how does
04:06that have sort of a a best practices and so it's like if you're getting shot at do you go vertical do
04:12you just put yourself in a little box like what do you do you really just have to read the player like
04:17you can you can even tell just by the way they move if like this is someone you're gonna battle for
04:21the next two minutes or is this someone you're just gonna build up above them and just jump on their
04:26head and shock them in the face so what you're trying to say is is if you happen to come
04:30across me in a game you would see me and immediately go loot pinata i don't have to worry
04:35yeah okay yeah you can you can just tell by the way people run and move and um but yeah like it's
04:42it's like a science pretty much like you just have to you're just trying to outbuild the person you're
04:47trying to get the high ground you're trying to build higher than them and um especially now that
04:52editing has been such a like a big thing because before this is like even like six months ago you
04:57pretty much just place the wall and if there's the guy on the other wall then you would just have
05:01to build up but now like you can edit a window and you shoot through a window and then there's like
05:06ways to like quick edit so you like edit edit back they shoot they break the wind the wall and before
05:12they can shoot again you shoot them then you place the wall like it's like a hole my head hurts
05:15but it's to hear like i love hearing this level of complexity though with a game like fortnite because
05:22when you watch it yes you know that there's a lot of stuff going on but then there's the that weird
05:27association where there's a bunch of people like us who are old and we look at and we say that's kid
05:32stuff but i love hearing the level of complexity and thought that goes into fortnite well what he was
05:38just talking about effectively is what i think of when i see someone playing starcraft when you hear the
05:43the top end strategies in starcraft and like all all they might see is like they might go into your
05:48base and see you don't have a hatcher a second hatchery yet but they already know that exactly
05:52what your build is because of that it's kind of that same level of being able to play your opponent
05:57more than play yourself yeah so the next thing is everybody's turned up about the world cup yeah
06:03everybody so i mean when that announcement was made was there sort of an instant switch that flip that
06:10says okay i'm training for the world cup now yeah yeah um so i'm i see myself more as like a content
06:16creator than a competitor i've i've won money in one of the skirmishes that i was invited to
06:21sure um but i'm more for like like i love being very good at the game it's a lot of fun but i'm i don't
06:28see myself as like you know like top like you're not you're not going for the title of world's best
06:32maybe world's most entertaining i think yeah that's the goal um i think first place for solos i think is
06:38is like two million dollars to three million dollars so i mean obviously that would be a
06:41nice chunk of change yeah you'd feel pretty happy walking away with that but like there's right now
06:47there's like the biggest guys that you you see like ninja obviously tfu um nick mercs and all these
06:53guys that do incredible um but then there's also all the guys that don't stream that don't post their
06:59stuff that like place in these tournaments it doesn't mean they're not good it just means they
07:03don't show it off yeah so they they purposely don't stream because they make a lot of money
07:08just placing in tournaments and they don't want to give away their strategies and stuff wow so even
07:13like this one guy um that i i won we came third in a tournament together um his name's saf and he i
07:21was like i've always been pushing him to stream because he's so good and like there's no reason
07:25people wouldn't watch him he's like no i want to keep my strategies to myself and then the world cup
07:29gets announced and i was like does this mean you're gonna stream more he's like no it seems i'm gonna
07:32stream way less way less because i don't want people to know what i'm doing because there's just
07:37you yeah everything you gotta you gotta learn especially in the competitive there's like
07:41in the end zone like the zone will be tiny the map the map playable area is tiny right like 50 people
07:4970 people in this small area and you gotta outplace all these people that you can't you can barely move
07:55in and now there's ballers and stuff and like it's just it's just crazy and see you would have never
08:00thought that that could possibly have an inverse effect on the streaming community right because
08:03you would think oh man you know a couple million dollars on the line they throw out a huge number
08:08like 100 million or something like that you would think everybody wants to hop on fortnight and start
08:12streaming but no everybody wants to keep those strategies to themselves and you know it's it's amazing
08:19that the game still has as many people watching it and streaming it yeah uh as they currently do right now
08:25yeah well and i mean to kind of follow up on that i mean you like you say you're not
08:29super into the competitive side but you i assumed you at least watch and and partake like oh yeah yeah
08:34yeah i play in scrims i sure do my my part so i mean what do you think about epics take so far on
08:41their uh esports scene uh we've talked a lot about it some things we think they do well some things we
08:46think they you know they could use some work on they uh they are extremely ambitious with the the model
08:52of like saying anyone can be a part of this uh what do you think of that i mean i'm i'm a big fan
08:58of that um i feel like league spots is not the way to go in my idea um i mean the games that you've seen
09:05have done it um like overwatch and i think call of duty is rumored to do it yep and uh nba league of
09:12legends like yeah there's just there's so much money behind it but like people want to watch like the
09:19whole story so in like fortnite if you're just watching a small streamer like you could you
09:24could technically start tomorrow and you could win the three million dollar tournament if you're you
09:28know you're just lucky enough to be that naturally gifted at it um and it's not like there's not a
09:35corporate there's obviously a corporate side but there's not a corporate side to being a professional
09:39you can just be a professional see so so maybe it becomes the battle royale version of the fgc right
09:46where you could just go in and sign up for a tournament yeah and if you're the best you'll
09:51win yeah and you won't have to worry about that's the idea and i mean there's a lot of discussion
09:56about it being like rng based but if you look at the tournaments especially like the big tournaments
10:01like it's always the same guys at the top right it's the same thing they said about poker for many
10:06years well that's just that's just luck okay then why is it the same people at the final table
10:10every single time yeah exactly so i mean i like what they're doing um obviously they're throwing
10:15a lot of money around um and the 100 million that they said is just for 2019 so i think they gave away
10:21like 15 million in 2018 just in testing um or 20 million or something but do they need to knock off
10:28dropping new patches right before tournaments yes okay just just making sure but they did say they're
10:34open to uh like having its own patch for tournaments yeah because one of the things about fortnite is
10:41that it's it's been new there's been something new like pretty much every week for the past year and
10:47a half since the game came out um maybe not since it came out because they were doing patches slower
10:52at first but still like they release new content all the time and obviously a lot of things are gonna
10:57be hit or miss like the ballers are a lot of fun for like the regular player but in competitive it's
11:04just a 300 extra shield that you can run around in and and not die nico vault he's a streamer for the
11:12detroit renegades and of course is a new friend of the show uh as part of beasley medium beasley xp
11:18nico man great having you thanks for having me absolutely
11:27you
