00:00When we last saw Dave, he was prepping parts to be sent off to the painter.
00:09This year's paint job is no easy task. Not only is there more to paint than previous builds,
00:14but it's a more ambitious look that'll challenge the patience and creativity of the painter.
00:19You know, we needed someone with a quick hand and keen eye to make something truly eye-catching.
00:24Luckily, Dave's found a painter ready to answer the call of the Call Sam Chopper Shop.
00:30Welcome to Pastoria, Michigan, home of endless green acres and custom motorcycle makers.
00:39We're at the Steel Horse Ranch, where owner Mike Thruyora has his stable filled with a team of mechanical mares.
00:46Among the herd are some rare beauties, including this award-winning replica of the famous Billy Bike from the film Easy Rider,
00:53painted by Double Take Customs' Jerry Chop Reardon.
00:58I'm Jerry Reardon. Everybody calls me Chop. I'm the owner of Double Take Custom Painting.
01:04I teamed up with Mike from Steel Horse Ranch. It's been a big help, especially on the business side of it.
01:10Dave gave me a pile full of parts and said paint it. So that's what I'm about to do.
01:19This job is a tall order, but before he can get creative, Jerry's got to prep and cover his bases. Of paint, that is.
01:32The first coat is a layer of black, which will be one of two tones used on the parts.
01:38Next, Jerry must establish a shape for the division of paint on the fairing.
01:44He covers his side for the second tone with paper, and preps yet again for the final application of black.
02:01When the paint is dry, Jerry retraces his line, this time masking for the second color.
02:13After all this taping, Jerry is seeing red.
02:21Once the red paint settles, Jerry can finally get creative on this metal.
02:26Dave provided a design to use as a frame of reference, and Jerry must now translate the look into a custom shape on the fairing.
02:34Designing from scratch takes time, and with hours of work to get to this point, Jerry must be confident before committing the shape to paint.
02:44Not every line makes the final cut, and lots of tape hits the painting room floor.
02:53Time flies in a blink of an eye as Jerry refines his lines, inching ever closer to his vision.
03:02Finally, he's satisfied with the design and gets ready for one last task of the day.
03:11With the shape complete, Jerry needs to create a marbled effect using a little trick of the trade.
03:20To accomplish this, he first sprays a layer of black, then a layer of silver.
03:28Before the paint dries, he quickly dabs the surface with plastic wrap.
03:32It ain't just for leftovers, folks.
03:40Peeling back the tape reveals a bold design that Jerry will touch up with an airbrush after the paint has dried.
03:46But for today, that's one part down, and many more left to go.
03:53Hi, this is Doug Wolf from Midwest Police Motorcycle Training with this week's safety tip, Hand Signals.
04:03Midwest Police Motorcycle Training and myself personally do not advocate the use of hand signals on a motorcycle for changes in speed or direction.
04:14Since the early 70s, motorcycles have come equipped with brake lights and turn indicators.
04:20This is what we recommend you use.
04:22One of the reasons being probably less than 20% of the drivers who drive cars really know what those hand signals mean.
04:30They've never been taught.
04:31But the most important reason is when you take your left hand off the handlebars to give a signal,
04:37you've given up 50% of the control of the front of your motorcycle.
04:41This is not a good thing to do.
04:46Next episode, Dave does a double take.
04:49As the Steel Horse crew arrives at Bad Pig with the finished paint,
04:52will it meet his expectations?
04:55Find out next time.
04:58All that masking tape made my head spin.
05:01It's one thing to spray a coat of paint, it's another to lock in a unique design.
05:05Speaking of unique, I love seeing such amazing work happening in unexpected locations right here in Michigan.
05:11It's great to highlight these shops and the artists doing top-tier work.
05:15It's a word-of-mouth type of industry, and funny enough, we have a few more words to share as well.
05:21That's right, go to CallSam.com and follow the links to purchase your raffle ticket for a chance to win this bike.
05:28We'll see you next time on the Call Sam Chopper Shop.
