00:23O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name.
00:30Graciously grant, through the intercession of Saint Simon and Jude, that your Church may constantly grow by an increase of
00:38the people who believe in you.
00:41Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
00:48one God forever and ever. Amen.
01:02Let us pray.
01:05Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you, remained
01:14alone in the hands of sinful men,
01:17like a most gentle lamb within the jaws of a ravenous wolf.
01:23Strengthen my excessive weakness and confirm my too great unstableness by the support of your grace,
01:29and join me to yourself with the bonds of love, that I may neither have no wish nor the power
01:35ever to depart or separate myself from you.
01:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who allowed yourself to be led around bound by an armed
01:48band and taken to Annas,
01:51allowing yourself to be stood before him as though you were a common criminal or robber.
01:59O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer, look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward,
02:06you uttered not a single word of complaint or murmur or word of resistance,
02:13but in silence you followed them wherever they led you,
02:17obeying their commands and permitted their wanton injuries to you.
02:23Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me, to the everlasting glory of your name.
02:31Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, King of heaven and earth,
02:35who in great humility, as poor and needy and of no account,
02:40was stood before the proud High Priest,
02:43and most sweetly endured the dreadful blow which his impious servant put upon you.
02:51Restrain, I beg you, in me all outbreak of anger and passion.
02:57Suppress all acts of indignation and quench within me all desire of revenge,
03:05that when I am provoked by injury I may not be disturbed,
03:08I may offer no resistance, may suffer no disquiet,
03:13but endure everything with a quiet mind,
03:16may I even repay evil with good.
03:20Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:23who permitted himself to be lead-boned in a shameful manner to Caiaphas,
03:28that you might deliver us from the penalty of eternal death,
03:32restoring to us true liberty.
03:36Make me most ready to endure every reproach and all contempt for your name's sake.
03:43Grant that in the very middle of ridicule and outrage
03:46I may give you thanks with a perfect heart,
03:49and by means of these trials may grow and increase more and more in your love.
03:57Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:00who, when three times denied by your Apostle Peter,
04:05mercifully turned and looked upon him with kindness,
04:09and brought him to repentance and holy sorrow for his sin.
04:13In like manner, may you turn upon me also,
04:17your eye of mercy and love,
04:19that I may weep over my past sins with the tears of true penitence,
04:24and may never again commit them.
04:27May I never be found sinning against your goodness in word or deed.
04:33Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:36who stood before the elders and the people of the Jews
04:39with a calm countenance and humble look,
04:42who did not refuse to be falsely accused,
04:45and to suffer many injuries.
04:48Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:51or to falsely accuse my neighbour,
04:54but that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:57the calumnies that are heaped upon me.
05:00Casting all my troubles upon you,
05:03may I always, in silence,
05:05look for the grave and consolation at your hands.
05:11Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:15who, when Caiaphas the high priest,
05:18adjured you by the name of God,
05:20declared the truth and proclaimed yourself the Son of God,
05:24and did not refuse to be counted by him
05:27and the rest who stood by as a blasphemer.
05:30May I fully abhor this contempt and defence against you.
05:34May I in every place
05:37reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty.
05:42May I think of you, adore, praise and love you,
05:47above all things,
05:48for ever and for ever.
05:51Amen.
05:55O Lord, open our lips,
05:57and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:07O be joy, pray the Lord,
06:11O be gladness,
06:13serve the Lord with gladness,
06:17and come in one,
06:19in presence with your song.
06:23Be sure that the Lord,
06:27He is God,
06:29He is the seed that has made us
06:32and lost by ourselves.
06:35We are His people
06:38and the sheep of His pasture.
06:42O do you praise
06:45to His peace with mercy,
06:48and in truth,
06:50His cross with grace,
06:54be thankful to Him
06:56and speak to the Lord of His name.
07:02For the Lord is gracious,
07:06His mercy is everlasting,
07:11and His truth and joy
07:15from generation to generation.
07:25glory be to the Father,
07:29and to the Son,
07:32and to the Son,
07:34and to the Lord of believers,
07:36as it was in the beginning,
07:40is now and ever shall be,
07:45world without Him.
08:12world without Him
08:28I will not come in the tabernacle
08:34of my house,
08:37but I'm up into my bed,
08:42I will not suffer
08:46my eyes to sleep,
08:48nor my eyelids to slumber,
08:53neither the temples
08:55or my head to take any rest,
09:01until I find out a place
09:05for the temple of the Lord,
09:09and have a petition
09:12for the mighty Lord of Jesus.
09:19Lord, we had on the same
09:23as Ephraim,
09:25and found it in the womb,
09:30we will go into his heaven above,
09:36And the Lord and each before His cross
09:43God, I, the Lord, into thy blessing place
09:50Mother, the ark of thy strength
09:56Let every sleep move in righteousness
10:01And let thy saints sing with joyfulness
10:09For thy servant David's sake
10:14Turn not away the presence of thy benointer
10:21The Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord, the Lord
10:26Come to David, and we shall not shrink from it
10:35For the fruit of thy body
10:40Shall I set upon thy seed
10:46If thy children will keep my garments
10:51And my testimonies that I shall learn them
10:57Thy children also shall sit upon my seed
11:04For evermore
11:07Though the Lord has chosen Zion
11:12To be an invitation for Himself
11:17He hath longed for us
11:23We shall be my best for ever
11:28If thy children will keep my heart
11:34And my son will keep my heart
11:39I will bless the little men in peace
11:44And will satisfy our fallen friend
11:51I will take our priests with them
11:57And the water
12:00And her sin shall rejoice and sleep
12:05Which shall heap the thought of David to flourish
12:12Where are all in the letter of I am righted
12:20As one is there, I shall rule them with shame,
12:29But upon himself is love for each.
12:40Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
12:47And to the Holy Ghost, and to the Lord in the beginning,
12:58Is now and ever shall be,
13:04Glory be to the Lord, and to the Lord.
13:21A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapters 14 and 15.
13:29The large crowds were accompanying Jesus, and turning to them, he said,
13:34If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother,
13:38And wife and children and brothers and sisters,
13:41And even his own life,
13:45He cannot be my disciple.
13:48Whoever does not carry his own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
13:53For which of you, wanting to build a tower,
13:56Does not sit down first and compute the cost,
13:58To see if he has the money to complete it?
14:02Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation,
14:05And is not able to finish the tower,
14:07All who see it will begin to make fun of him.
14:11They will say,
14:12The man began to build and was not able to finish.
14:17Or what king,
14:18Going out to confront another king in battle,
14:21Will not sit down first and determine whether or not he is able,
14:24With ten thousand,
14:25To oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
14:30If he cannot succeed,
14:31He will send a representative,
14:33While the other is still a long way off,
14:34And ask for peace.
14:37In the same way, therefore,
14:39Not one of you can be
14:41My disciple,
14:42If he does not renounce all his own possessions.
14:47Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming to hear him,
14:51But the Pharisees and the experts in the law were complaining,
14:55This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.
14:59So Jesus told them this parable,
15:03Which of you,
15:04If he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them,
15:07Would not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture,
15:10And go look for the one that is lost until he finds it?
15:15Then, when he has found it,
15:17He will place it on his shoulders,
15:19Rejoicing.
15:21Returning home,
15:22He calls together his friends and neighbours,
15:24Telling them,
15:25Rejoice with me,
15:26For I have found my sheep that was lost.
15:30I tell you,
15:31I tell you in the same way,
15:31There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents,
15:35Than over the ninety-nine righteous,
15:37Who have no need to repent.
15:41Or what woman,
15:42If she has ten silver coins and loses one of them,
15:45Does not light a lamp,
15:46Sweep the house and search thoroughly until she has found it?
15:50Then,
15:51When she has found it,
15:52She calls together her friends and neighbours,
15:55Saying,
15:56Rejoice with me,
15:57For I have found the coin that I lost.
16:00In the same way,
16:01I tell you,
16:02There is joy in the presence of God's angel,
16:05Over one sinner who repents.
16:09This is the word of the Lord.
16:12Thanks be to God.
16:18Jesus had words of warning for the crowd that was following him.
16:23We read that it was a great crowd,
16:26Probably with a wide mix of motives for being there.
16:29Many being curious,
16:32Some wishing to make a dispute,
16:34Some enjoying his company and wisdom,
16:37And a few who generally,
16:39Genuinely,
16:40Wished to follow him,
16:42And learn from him.
16:46The purpose of this warning is not to tell the world that we must hate our families,
16:51But to warn us that we must be prepared to give up everything,
16:55When we choose to follow him.
16:58In Mark 1.18, for example,
17:00We read that his disciples left their nets and followed him.
17:05In other words,
17:07They left their livelihoods and their families behind,
17:10And took up a life on the road with their master,
17:13Luke 5.11 confirms this,
17:16Telling us that they left everything behind.
17:21Jesus is, in fact,
17:23Telling us that in relative terms,
17:25We must put aside everything when we take up his cross,
17:29Or more accurately,
17:30His burden.
17:31If we love him,
17:33We can no longer love our families in the same way.
17:37Surely,
17:38We will still love our wives,
17:40Husbands and children,
17:41But they are no longer the centre of our lives,
17:44For Jesus has taken that place.
17:47And if he calls us,
17:49We must leave them immediately and follow.
17:54Mark 10.29 confirms this,
17:56When we read,
17:57That those who have left their homes,
17:59Their loved ones and their work for him,
18:01Will have their reward in heaven.
18:06This is not to say,
18:07That we will be called to leave everything and everyone behind.
18:11But it is something,
18:12That we must be prepared to do.
18:16Consider Abraham,
18:18He had waited 80 years,
18:19To have a son with his wife Sarah.
18:22But when Isaac was merely a young boy,
18:25God called on Abraham,
18:27To take him,
18:28And to make him a sacrifice to God.
18:32This was a test,
18:33To see how much Abraham loved God.
18:36Did he still love the Lord more than anything or anyone else?
18:42But God did not actually want the boy killed,
18:45Of course.
18:45An alternative sacrifice was provided.
18:51How many people in the crowd that followed,
18:53Would have been upset by these words,
18:55I wonder.
18:57Even today,
18:58How many of us,
18:59Are perhaps disturbed,
19:01At least a little,
19:02By them.
19:05If these words trouble us,
19:07Then this is a good thing.
19:09For we need to be sure,
19:11In our hearts square,
19:12Our priorities lie.
19:14Who do we love more?
19:16God,
19:17Or the beautiful,
19:18Loving wife and child at home?
19:21He might just ask us,
19:23To make a choice.
19:25Do we want to start building our house,
19:28If we are not comfortable,
19:29With paying the full cost?
19:34Yet again,
19:35We see the authorities,
19:36On the attack against Jesus.
19:38Why does he always mix,
19:40With sinners and outcasts,
19:42Non-people,
19:43Instead of us,
19:44Important people?
19:46The answer is simple.
19:48Jesus tells us,
19:50He is the shepherd.
19:51He seeks out the lost,
19:52For they need to be found.
19:54He is searching for the sheep,
19:56That are separate from the flock.
19:59The reality,
20:01Of course,
20:01Is that we have all been lost,
20:03And that one by one,
20:04We are being found,
20:05And returned to the flock.
20:08Jesus is still looking,
20:09For the many,
20:10Who remain lost.
20:14When I was younger,
20:15I used to struggle,
20:17With this concept,
20:18That there would be more joy,
20:20Over the return of the one,
20:21That was lost,
20:22Than there would be,
20:23Over the ninety-nine,
20:24That were always accounted for.
20:27It seemed a little unfair to me,
20:28To be honest,
20:30That there was a better treatment,
20:31For the sinner,
20:31Who came back to the fold,
20:33And for those,
20:34Who had never left it.
20:36But years later,
20:37It has began to make sense,
20:41To simplify the idea,
20:42But without wishing,
20:43To trivialise it.
20:45Remember back to,
20:46When you were a child,
20:47And you had perhaps,
20:49Lost a toy.
20:51When you eventually found it,
20:53You probably ran,
20:54And told your parents,
20:54All about it,
20:55And spent the next few days,
20:58Playing with it constantly.
21:01But this does not mean,
21:02You no longer wanted,
21:03Your other toys.
21:05You were just so,
21:06Incredibly pleased,
21:06To have found the one,
21:07That was missing.
21:10Add to this the fact,
21:12That in reality,
21:13We are all lost,
21:13At some point.
21:15And fairness,
21:16Really no longer,
21:17Seems to come into it.
21:19Remember,
21:20That we were all led astray,
21:21And have only recently,
21:23Returned to the fold.
21:25And let us realise,
21:26That the party,
21:27Is indeed for all of us.
21:33The piece of silver,
21:34Whatever it was,
21:36Was great to the owner.
21:38And here lies the point,
21:40Of the parable.
21:41A soul,
21:42As an individual creature,
21:44An atom in God's universe,
21:47And it may in itself,
21:48Be a very insignificant thing.
21:50But it is a great thing,
21:51As far as God is concerned.
21:54This is his dignity.
21:56How great,
21:57How dear to God,
21:57No man can ever judge,
22:01Because no man is a creator,
22:03And no man is a redeemer.
22:06It needs absolutely,
22:07To have created a thing,
22:09And absolutely to have redeemed a thing,
22:12Before you can calculate,
22:13What it's worth would be,
22:15To one who stood,
22:16In that relationship.
22:19So let us go with this woman,
22:20In her quest,
22:22It is deliberate,
22:24Painstaking,
22:25Protractive,
22:26Protractive,
22:27And defective.
22:30First,
22:31She lights a candle,
22:32The well known emblem,
22:33In the bible,
22:33Of three things,
22:35First,
22:36The spirit of God,
22:36In the man's soul,
22:38Second,
22:39The word of God,
22:40And third,
22:41The consistent lives,
22:42Of ministers,
22:42And other servants,
22:43Of God.
22:45These three together,
22:46Make the great detective force,
22:48And so ultimately,
22:49The great restorative power,
22:51Which God uses,
22:52In this world.
22:56With the lit candle,
22:58The woman went,
22:59To squeak the house,
23:01In the parable of the shepherd,
23:03The sheep was gone out,
23:04Into the wilderness,
23:06Here the lost one,
23:07Was still in the house,
23:09It seems to me,
23:10More affecting,
23:11To be a lost soul,
23:12In the house,
23:13Rather than,
23:14To be a lost soul,
23:15In the wilderness,
23:17It is a great commotion,
23:18And disturbance,
23:19To sweep,
23:20But it leads,
23:21To cleanliness,
23:23And order,
23:24So God's sweepings,
23:26Are severe things,
23:27But then it is only,
23:28To brush away,
23:29What had no right,
23:30To be there,
23:32You will not,
23:32Complain later,
23:33Nor will you regret,
23:34The turmoil,
23:35When the costly thing,
23:36That which was almost hidden,
23:39Sparkles again,
23:40In the hand of its great owner,
23:44All the parables agree,
23:46In the one blessed,
23:48Crowning thought,
23:49Until she finds it,
23:51It is not a light achievement,
23:53Even with the lit candle,
23:54And with the cliff sweeping,
23:55She had to seek diligently,
23:58To go up and down,
23:59And do her work,
24:00Over and over again,
24:02But love,
24:03The love she had,
24:04For her lost treasure,
24:05Carried her on,
24:06And she could not stop,
24:07Until she bent,
24:09Until she bent it,
24:36Until she bent it,
29:13Amen.
